I’m confused I know that 1=c and 2=d but how do you play these notes on the Pipa?

Hello everyone! Is pipa string action supposed to be very high? I measure about 5-6 mm space between the first bamboo pin (7th) and the string. The last bamboo pin has 7-8 mm empty space bellow the string.. This makes pressing strings challenging, since a lot of force to be applied to push strings deep. Also these high tension steel strings glide so easily on the pins, making me to produce innacurate notes if I press too hard. Ring finger and pinky fingers suffer the hardest, pushing steel almost 1 cm down on a slippery bamboo fret with no bottom.. Is my pipa correctly adjusted? I think the action can not be lowered, the bamboo bridge seems to be permanently glued to the Paulownia board... How is it possible to "shred" fast between the notes on such high string action? Also, pushing middle strings so deep makes it extremely easy to touch neighbor strings, effectively unwillingly muting them..Pushing down 1 string at a time is almost OK, but pressing several strings at a time will be really hard. Is this instrument supposed to be that hard, or am I missing something with my pipa setup? I have Landtom chicken wing (wenge hardwood) pipa.

Hi Carrie, I had a quick question (I know this video is over 4 years old, I hope you still might respond to this comment though!), in this video you teach 一品 is D, 三品 is E, 四品 is F, and 六品 is G. I am very confused because I had been using a book for learning which notes each fret is (a Chinese book), and in that book it stated that the notes on the first string for the corresponding frets were: 一品 A, 二品F, 四品 G, and 六品 A. I am so confused, any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Kris N Hi Kris, thank you for the question. I don’t which book you are using, but if you are talking about all the notes on the first string, it’s impossible that 一品 and 六品 are the same notes, they must be different. What I taught is based on D major, which is the most basic and common major for beginning levels to learn Pipa. Back to the your book, if the sixth pin is A, then it’s C major, so the first pin should be E, definitely not A. Hopes these helps.
