I just came from a trip and was able to use my torium 14. It was really smooth and great but when fighting a good size fish i felt the drag was weaker than it should. I know that max drag is 17lbs so when i got home i tried with a scale i ended up getting less than 10 lbs on the max setting. 2 clicks less and i have less than 5 lbs. Is there something wrong with my torium?
I highly recommend the Shimano trevala jigging rod in the 6'6 or taller if you prefer but jigging don't require massive rod personally. Power: Medium, Action: Medium Fast braided 30-80lb. Still got mine after 11 years. Paired with the shimano torium 14.
I have both 14 & the 16. 16 gives you more capacity & I put 50 lb on it. I just respooled my 14 with 500 plus yds 30 lb power pro. It was my 1st saltwater reel & still my favorite - I think it was about 180.00. I save the 16 for faralon island trips but the 14 is just really balanced & much more comfortable for nearshore rockcod lingcod. Great reel & I have12 or 13 different ones.
I like the size 20. I back mine with 300 yds of 65lb braid and run a 40lb mono topshot for tossing irons on the long rod. I would throw the 30 size but my hands are too small to hold it comfortably. A wider reel allows the line to come off the reel better for a long cast. I have a buddy that filled his 20 size full of 80lb braid and it seems to work for him until he backlashes. I like the mono cuz its cheap, easy to cast, has good stretch on a freight train bite, easy to fix backlashes, and i can rip off the topshot in a couple minutes and go down to 30lb or up to 50lb.
I cant find any information on how to take the side plate off? It doesnt look like it comes off. How do i adjust braking? Im considering upgrading the bearinga and installing mag brakes but cant find any info on how to disassemble this reel.
@@peppitachips1764 I've used the 16hg for thresher sharks and stopped them no problem, that being stated, the 14 won't have the balls and line cap to bring sharks in fast enough for a safe release, specially if you're fishing from a pier like I do.
It’s also a great surf casting reel.
It’s the only torum model that has centrifugal brakes.
It’s like a tranx 400 without the level wind.
Can this thing be used for bottom fishing or is the Gear Ratio to High for pulling large grouper and snapper off the bottom.
Yes it can be.
The 16 size loaded with 50 ot 65lb braid would be much better than the 14 for this application.
With that high gear ratio you think it’s good for yellowtail ???
Yes.

Send it in to Shimano and find out.
Shit stock drags. Switch them out with ht 100 drag washers and grease them. Check out smoothdrag.com and you can easily order new drags for your reel.
Shimano 14 or daiwa saltist 20 ?
What’s a good rod you recommend with this reel for stripers? Jigging mainly and some live bait. Thanks

Anyway you could do a side by side video of the torium 14hg & 16hg I’d like to see how big of a difference there is between the two.
That's not something we do but just go by weight and line capacity.

I’m considering this for inshore in SoCal. Would it be better to get this, the Komodo 463 or a Lexa 400 Hd?
They are all nice. Just depends on if you want a low profile with a level wind or an open face star drag.
Could I use this reel for Tarpon fishing?
Yup
you didn't quote the Max drag this reel is coming with, I'm wondering... happy 4th Josh
17lbs on the 14 hga jumps up to 24 for the 16hg
Is the Torium 14 SW too big for fluking with a Trevela F rod?
It will work just fine.
How much line dose it take for 12lb test. ???
A lot, don't put 12lb. Put 30 at the very least
would you get this or the penn alternative
Torium.
What do you think is better the touruim 14 or the avet sx g2
SX will have more power but the torium is lighter and has better castablility because it's a stardrags vs.leverdrag sx
Does this model.use a rod clamp?
jimmy Palos it comes with one
Can I use this reel for surface irons for yellow tales and small tuna? If not what real would you recommend

It doesn't have breaks Because it's not a baitcaster. This reel is a conventional and you just need to learn how to cast.
The sideplate is only removed for serviceing
could I use this reel for shark ?
How big is the shark u wanna catch? Probably not.
You can take anything 8 feet max
