Exploring The Terrifying Hanging Coffins | The Death Ritual (Cemetery In The Sky)

  • inside Sagada, Philippines Instead of being placed into the ground, the coffins are hung either inside the caves or on the face of the cliffs, near the hanging coffins of their ancestors. The Sagada people have been practicing such burials for over 2,000 years, and some of the coffins are well over a century old. Eventually the coffins deteriorate and fall from their precarious positions.
The reason the coffins were hung was due to the belief that the higher the dead were placed, the greater chance of their spirits reaching a higher nature in the afterlife. Many of the locations of the coffins are difficult to reach (and obviously should be left alone out of respect)

The body inside the coffins are in a fetal position. This is due to the belief that people should leave the world in the same position as they entered it, also their beliefs in reincarnation.

Btw, the humongous butterfly that you just saw inside your room is called " MARIPOSA" by some of us Filipinos.
    Edit:
And btw, if you ask some Filipinos if what seeing or being visited by a MARIPOSA symbolizes is that it symbolizes, rebirth or resurrection; transformation and hope or sometimes it's just a good omen or good luck 🍀
And by hearing that you just came back to your old roots which is exploring, maybe just maybe , that butterfly is welcoming you and maybe it's a sign that you chose the right path by coming back and exploring the world again.

Mariposa is just Spanish for butterfly but yes in many cultures butterflies represent rebirth (because they start as caterpillars and go through a metamorphosis) It's also a common belief in Filipino culture that butterflies and moths are the souls of the recently departed 🦋

@@alsmith5526all seems pretty accurate to me mariposa means butterfly so that checks out and all the symbolic meanings are pretty common among many cultures the butterfly is the defacto symbol for change/transformation

One filipino believe that if that big butterflies reside on the inside of the house at evening. Its a visit from the otherside, a ancestor or someone who pass away with strong presence wants to observe. It looks like a Mariposa variant butterfly. Theres even way more bigger that that like human head big. But story sees the bigger the more old and powerful it is as ancestor. Some can come back. You guys are respectful and cool so probably curious and wants to join in. Banana for muscle control and endurance. Potassium. Guide knows what he was doing. Welldone

I don't understand, you say check my merch out but every time I do its all sold out ? Could buy some cards but wanting the clothing. Is it because I'm in the UK ?

Incredible, amazing, beautiful, and so respectfully done. It's so great to see and hear what other cultures do and believe in. This was a real eyeopener. Loved every minute. And the scenery was just beautiful too. Well done Josh. Brilliantly done.

Was manong George Zarck's old tour guide when he first came to this hanging coffins burial ground? His face is familiar but I'm not really sure.

Manong George is so wise. Kudos!

Thought Gorge was kind of grumpy at 1st. But he's the dude 😎. Glad you didn't get hurt, Josh when you fell!

In the ph you’re not supposed to talk/laugh and curse loudly when you’re in the forest and caves. You “might disturb” the spirits.

Sorry, awesome video, but I have to add: the Atlas is an actual butterfly, lives for a very short time and is usually the jewel of any good butterfly-garden at zoo's (in the Netherlands anyway). Kids have this beauty on their hand or shoulder there all the time, totally harmless; they can't even eat. 😅
