Why Mcdonald's lost to Banh Mi in Vietnam

  • McDonald’s is huge, in the US only there’re nearly 14,000 locations, that’s one Mcdonald's every 24,000 people.
But in Vietnam, 1 McDonalds serves 4.2 million people.
One of the main reasons is they have to compete with a much cheaper and better alternative: the BANH MI
Vietnam is famous for its street food culture and Banh Mi is the king of all the street food in Vietnam, a challenge for any international burger chains entering the Vietnamese market.
It took McDonald's 22 years to make the 1st ever profit in India, how long will it take to be in a higher position than it is today in Vietnam? There are still many uncertainties when it comes to what McDonald’s chooses to do next in Vietnam, but if it doesn’t take quick & smart actions, McDonald’s might exit the market in the next decade.

So cool to see there are places out there that the big American conglomerates didn't spoil... I can't wait to visit Vietnam!

the only reason why Mcdonalds didnt take off in Vietnam is price. Vietnam is still quite poor which means street vendors exist who sell at a fraction of what Mcdonalds sells. Mcdonalds is the cheapest food in most developed countries. When and IF Vietnam ever develops. The street food business will quickly die

      That's not true.
Street food, they never die in Asian countries, even for developed countries like Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia... you can find street foods everywhere. The only reason Vietnamese people choose Banh Mi over a burger simply because it tastes better. Price is one of the many reasons, but it really doesn't matter. Mc Donalds and Burger King can keep throwing discounts and promotions, but it's never worked. Never has and never will.

@@donnietd thats not even true. a burger from Mcdonalds in Vietnam is 5 usd. A banh mi is 70 cents. What r u talking about? Its all due to price. When a Viet makes 80 cents an hours. Why would they buy a 5 usd burger? Get real. Stop acting like people don't eat that food because the street food is healthy,, which it is not because the ingredients are collected from poor farmers.. KFC is much more popular in Asia Compared to McDonald's.

@@diegoaespitia Agree that the price is a reason but it is not the only. Why should you choose a thing more expensive while you can choose another thing lot cheaper - and the most important - more tasty, more healthy? What will you choose?

@@diegoaespitia I've never said street food is more healthy. I said it tastes better. Meanwhile fast food is never healthy as well. Also there are too many assumptions in your opinion. It doesn't matter, just say what I think is true.

Vietnam has very complex, inexpensive and really, really good food. Keep giving your money to the banh mi vendors and enjoy every bite!

Other Asian countries also have great street food culture though, Mc Donalds is popular there
