Juvenile grizzly bear siblings fend for themselves after male kills third sibling!

  • When this female showed up in the spring with her three two year old cubs, we were all surprised. In the past, it seemed she would disperse them immediately out of the den at this age. But here she was and we weren't sure if she was going to hold onto them later into the season, maybe even another full season? She took her cubs into a tight drainage mid May called King Creek. We receive a report of a dead bear cub and I immediately know it's one of hers. We hike in 2km to retrieve the cub and find fur and scuffle marks, indicating a battle had taken place. Investigating the scene we find two sets of adult tracks trending deeper into the ravine as the male would of followed the female to mate. A necropsy was done on the cub and the evidence and damage was that from a large male grizzly.
    It took a few days but the two remaining cubs started to emerge, but strangely enough they were not together. In most cases cubs will stay together during this season and into the next. With her GPS collar we could keep tabs on the mother bear who remained in one general area, with relatively little to no movement for well over a week, almost two. It had some fearing she too had parished from possible injuries from defending the cubs. Finally on June 3rd, she emerged unscaved and doing well, she was mating. We hiked back to this location to look for additional clues on why she and her possible mate stayed almost bedded in one location, maybe a carcass?
    We only find plenty of digs and lush vegetation with several day beds.
    Over the next 7 months the two 2y/o cubs never paired up with mom or even themselves. Even though these two were seen quite often they were never a real issue which was another surprise as two year old sub-adults usually are. By late October they both looked great and ready to den. As for mom, she had put on some incredible weight for heading for hibernation. In 2020 she showed up with 2 cubs of the year, and her now 3 y/o sub adults were once again back on the landscape and thriving. Hope you enjoyed their story!

      @@jimc4839 Well cubs will stay with the mama bear for about 2 years, give or take. The mama bear will do everything possible to protect them in most cases. In that time, they learn survival skills from the mama who prepares them the entire time to be off on their own. Once that time comes, the mama bear leaves off to have more cubs. Siblings will normally remain together for a while afterwards. But, solitary male bears look for a mate and will kill cubs for the chance to breed with their mothers. Up to 40% of brown bear cubs don't survive their first year and male bears are their #1 cause of death. It's all very interesting.

    What is mom bear's motivation in going off with the new male bear?? Is it instinctive to her to want to mate and raise more cubs?? Or to go off with the male bear to protect her existing cubs that the new male might otherwise kill?? If she didn't follow the male, would he get aggressive toward her, possibly kill her cubs, maybe kill her, but ultimately move on?? Maybe it's unpredictable, plays out all diff ways. Thanks for vid.

Indulging in anthropomorphism??? Huh??

    • @Lea_Kaderova

      Motivation is very simple - to preserve her genes. Once male kill or chase off cubs from her, levels of "mothernal" hormones in her body go down and she start to going in heat again and also accept presence of male around. Female bears protecting furiously mainly very young cubs. Once they survive their second winter, female is usually not wishful to risk her own health or life in protecting them. Its time when cubs must become more and more independent and able to take care about themselves and also its time when its biggest chance they die.

      Absolutely, it's about putting the female back into estrus. If she is producing milk for cubs and the cubs are eliminated, she quickly goes back into mating mode. As the cubs get older and bigger, it is also a way to eliminate future competition for food and mating. Young males have it even worse as they walk on egg shells until they are big enough to contend.

    How old until a bear inst considered a cub?

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depending who you talk to, a bear is referred to as a cub usually up to around 2.5 to 3 years old, than once it is on it's own it is considered a sub adult, which covers the years until thay are sexual mature (not sexual active, they'll start at 2-3 y/o). For a grizzly, the average age for having cubs is around 7-8, and they are now adults. I believe once they hit 18-20 they are considered senior, even though many females continue to have cubs till around 22-23y/o. Generally the life expectancy of a grizzly in the wild is 25, and with that, I have seen several north of that with a few at 30 years old.

      @TheBearGuyCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@wolfslayer879 , I've seen older bears become very selective and sometimes even avoid interacting with large dominant bears during mating season. But in most cases they will remain sexual active right to the end, it's their health that determines whether they will carry cubs or not. It's common to see bears north of 25 partnered up during the mating season. The oldest sow i can recall having cubs was 23 years old, she had two. Was able to keep one alive and with her till she was 26. If she is still alive in 2022, she will be 28, she looked really healthy last season.

      Mom will put up a fight but these cubs were at the age she would turn to self preservation and leave them. In many situation they can ward off a male by acts of aggression, but if he is determined and shows dominance the female is no match for the male. A spring time female is 2-300 pounds, a dominant male is 3-500 pounds, too much size and power. Once the cubs are dispersed or killed, she will go into estrus, this can take a few days to a few weeks. the male will continue to stalk her till she is receptive. With the sow in this video, she showed up this spring with 2 new cubs, and that makes 15 cubs over her lifetime at 19 years old. To date, counting these two, only 5, possibly 6 cubs have survived and still on the landscape.

      It happens all the time actually. The female will lead the male off to preserve the lifes of her two remaining cubs. At 2.5 y/o this was usually when she would disperse them. The male and her were together or around each other for best part of two weeks after this altercation. This is why males kill cubs is for the mother will go back into estrus. It may take a few days to a week for she is receptive but she will return to mating. Sometimes after the mating is done she will pick back up with the cubs, but in this case she was done with them, and would even run them off.
