- This was broadcast on Channel4 circa 1997 and is from my own off-air. My C4 image reception wasn't perfect but thanks to NICAM stereo video, the sound quality is EXCELLENT.
This was shown alongside the similarly great 'Naked And Famous' documentary but as that's been officially released on DVD, I didn't salvage that one from tape.
The songs played include variations on Tear Out My Eyes, Ghetto Youth ( with Cath Coffee ) and Smoking Beagles. We also get Bad Dreams, Christiansands, Makes Me Wanna Die, Lyrics Of Fury, Overcome and Vent.
I saw him on the same tour at the Glasgow Barrowlands. Much of the audience hated it. It was one of the best shows I've seen.

Damn, this was definitely his golden age. I remember seeing this tour and he was literally on top of the fucking world.
To fully comprehend the genius of it, people need to know the records and see how he just takes the original songs and goes wherever the fuck he wants with it. Not repeating himself. Adding lyrics. Changing as many things as he wishes. Giving performance its real meaning. People get to see something unique and unforgettable.
Can't believe there is no better sound recording than this...it's really really sad.

His live thing from that era has never been given due credit. It didn't help that a lot of people there liked chilled out music so being confronted with this brilliant racket had them leaving. As someone as likely to listen to slow hip-hop as metal, I loved it. I wish he released a live album of the noisier stuff to try and get it heard by people who might really like it. And so I could listen to it.

It makes me sad that I was too young at the time to see him perform during the late '90s. The songs were heavy, and he performed with extreme intensity. I saw him on stage a few times during the last 10 years or so, but his latest musical output just doesn't resonate with me. For me, he was one of the most exciting acts in the nineties, but something changed after Blowback, could only listen to Knowle West Boy after that.
I was thinking the same things. Right smack dab in the middle of Brit Pop / American Rap- Rock and the tail end of Grunge and Shoegaze- East Coast vs West Coast- Boy Bands and Britany/ Aguilera/.... Then something from " Over the Pond" that is so FUKIN Grimy!!! Hip Hop/ Trip Hop/ Electronica/Punk- Lets face it- all the good stuff!!! This brilliant artist blew me away!! And I ask 30 somethings- have u heard of Tricky?? Always no!!!! W TF!!! Check him out people!!!!

Just finished the amazing autobiography and had to come back and watch this again. Still one of the best ever live performances captured on camera. Not just Tricky...anyone. Why this only has 17,000 views I just cannot understand. Thank you again for uploading this. Pure magic.

@@deccart5093 yea I have watched some of his live shows on TH-cam that were recorded within the previous 2 to 3 years. Honestly wasnt impressed. I miss the age of Tricky and Martina from their youth.

I still remember when I bought Maxinquaye what a cultural shock, such an innovative time for music.

Thanks for posting this. I saw this tour in San Francisco. Just like your experience, lots of people had no clue what to think about the performance. But some of us were inspired and it was epic. Martina is a siren.

Thanx Dec Cart for this, it's fuckin' deadly! Same tour when Tricky played Hackney Empire? Tried to get street tickets when squatting a big gaff (now a Tesco) 3min walk away. No chance, even when the little money we had then could feed multiple villages. Tricky is the original punk.

Intro music to this is Danzig's 'Cantspeak' which is interesting. Anyway, saw Tricky in Winston-Salem NC USA in 1998. One of the most unique performances I've ever witnessed.
