Next to Elvis, you my friend are the second most person I have the deepest respect for. Great job at digging up these hard to find Elvis landmarks. Keep up the great work.
Omg Spa Guy, thank you for taking me down memory lane. Born and raised and working in Memphis at the Orpheum Theatre during its Broadway show incarnation and going to every movie house downtown on Saturdays when I was a kid until I moved away in 1989, I can’t tell you how pleased I am to have found your channel. Kallen Esperian is a famous opera singer who performed there and recorded albums in Memphis. At one time Memphis was a stop on the Metropolitan Opera nationwide tour circuit. Rufus Thomas was a Memphis born celebrity. Check out Rufus Thomas and his famous song and dance called “The Funky Chicken”. His daughter, Carla Thomas, is a famous soul singer and a star in her own right.
hello I live in Paris, but I visited Memphis last year, and if you want to see The star of Elvis presley you have to go in front of the Peadbody Hotel in Union avenue to see it enjoy!

That's 'Walkin the Dog', 'Do the Funky Chicken', STAX Records, Rufus Thomas. I just read, 'Elvis, What Happened?' It's a wild read. Been watching for a long time. Always wondered what your take on that book is.
I recently reread the book and don't see what all of the stir is about.. In my opinion compared to what others have written including family it was not really that bad..
@@SpaGuy Back then, that was shocking stuff. But now. If Elvis stole someone's birthday, or greased the stairs at the old folks home. No one would blink an eye. If yer ever out pacific northwest. E, Scotty, n DJ. Played Portland, Ore., on their 1sr tour of the PNW. They played Civic Stadium(now PGE park) is still there, and the adjoining building where, he had a local press scrum. Theres really good footage of him at, Union Station, he arrived by train. And the station is still active. Theres plenty of articles from that time. on the line.

Watching in July 2023. Thank you for this cool video. I'm catching up on sime of your vids that I've not see. Love seeing the area as i may never make it there. A girl can only hope.
Late July 1956, days after his triumphant return from New York and his Russwood Stadium concert in Memphis on the 2nd. Elvis is getting a parking ticket. He is wearing a Pink Gabardine Shirt from Lansky´s shop that was auctioned in 2010. This picture was taken by Lloyd Shearer, a photographer-journalist covering Elvis on that particular day for publicity purposes. He had just had his hair cut at Jim’s Barbershop that once occupied the premises right by Loew´s, at 203. If you carefully watch this picture or zoom in you will be able to see the famous barber sign just above and behind the officer's hat. This is one of several photographs taken by Shearer right in this very same spot. Some of them were taken in color. They later went to the Peabody Hotel to take some candids in one of its rooms and there are also some taken at Elvis´Audubon home that day. All the buildings we can see in the other pictures, in front of the theater and Jim´s, are long gone. The importance of mentioning Jim´s barbershop is that in 1956 Elvis was at the brink of his fame., that was the year when it all happened for Elvis, and Elvis would have very much cared to choose who would have his hair cut. We can´t get to know if he had been a long-time customer by then, but knowing how iconic his hair was already becoming we can not ignore the fact that he trusted these guys to do the job. Just google Elvis + Jim´s barber and you will find most of these pictures Thanks a lot for your videos, they are very interesting to me.
Another reason Elvis would be turning in his grave....Robert Goulet played a love interest to Priscilla in Naked Gun 2 1/2! As always, very interesting video Spa Guy.👍

It was originally The Orpheum. It showed vaudeville shows originally. Sometime it changed to Malco Theatres. It's a local movie theatre in town. It eventually changed back to The Orpheum where they have Broadway shows. They do have other acts such as singers, comedians, and do show movies.
Built 1928 to replace the first Orpheum Opera House that burned in 1923. Went broke in the late 30's and was sold on the courthouse steps to Malco [M. A. Lightman Co.] in 1940. Remained the Malco until the 1970's, barely escaped the Urban Renewal wrecking ball, and rechristened the Orpheum in the 1980's. I went there several times in the early 1960's.
Thank you for the information. I appreciate it and I'm sure @Spa Guy does too. It's so cool to see where Elvis and other stars had been during their life.

I have often wondered if Elvis could come back , what would he say of all the changes he missed out on . You have to be inducted INTO this , Obviously somebody needs to get Elvis inducted .
Great video Spa Guy......there were two Lowe’s Theaters back in the day. The Lowe’s State was there on Main Street where you pointed to. That theatre was truly a grand movie house. There was a marble hallway leading from the front door for almost two city blocks all the way to the concession stand and main theatre. The Lowe’s Palace Movie Theatre was on Union Ave next to the Britling Cafeteria that you showed. Both were very impressive buildings and to go to the Lowe’s Palace to see a movie then to Britlings to eat was the end all be all. I know Elvis worked at the Lowe’s for sure, but I’m not sure if he worked at one of them or both?
Love these videos brother! I went to Memphis from Bama to see Graceland, and went on a walk down this street. I wish I would have saw these videos before I went! Thanks for all the work making these.
Great video brother I'm going through your whole catalog, however you should know that Kallen Esperian is a Memphis native who is also an opera singer that sung with Pavarotti before his death. I understand your frustration with Elvis not being on the Memphis Walk of Fame so to speak, but he definitely is on Beale Street right in front of Alfred's at the corner of 3rd and Beale. And as Memphians were proud to have her as well. Keep making videos brother!! We're loving and living them!

This is Lowes Theater on Union ave . I have lived in Memphis my whole life also , plenty of history of Memphis Music . just wanted to help you on Logistics . Tighten up. ! The Truth about Robert Goulet ! BTW this is were Elvis worked as a Usher the Photo on Union . Many get confused. I knew quite a few of the old M.M and had a family member who recorded with Elvis . Thanks for the videos ..
That's crazy paving not having Elvis name on there. I was puzzled by Elvis famous dislike of Robert Goulet and wondered what it was about but then I read somewhere that Gulag promised to take care of Anita Wood while he was in the Army - if I remember right - so it might be a male pride thing rather than a dislike of him as an entertainer. That really brings the photo and the history alive seeing the location where the photo was taken. Seen it before but I hadn't even noticed Elvis was dipping into the back pocket of the guy giving him a ticket. Possibly because the pic is usually cropped. Cheeky Elvis. lol Fabulous video!
Memphis looked so much more interesting then. I went there 22 years ago. I remember it was an easy place to walk around down town. Robert Goulet was that creepy guy in the Shangri Las video Leader of the Pack.
LOL! I knew E shot his TV when Robert Goleta came on, so Elvis wasn’t fond of him but I never heard why Elvis didn’t like him! Rufus Thomas soul singer around the 70’s. The Funky Chicken guy😀
That was so funny about the ticket. Can't believe the policeman gave Elvis one. lol Hey Billy, Kevin Kern-spokesman for Graceland, said that Elvis did not dislike Robert Goulet and they were friends and Robert Goulet has even said they were friends. But then again, it is said that Goulet added to a letter that Anita Wood wrote to Sgt. Presley and then Elvis carried a grudge about that for years against him. I guess that is another piece of the Elvis puzzle you need to bust. It is said that Elvis shot 50 TV's total, got an info on that? Just wondering. All part of the Elvis puzzle. I can't believe they don't have an Elvis star! Rufus Thomas was a rhythm and blues singer, songwriter, DJ, dancer and comic entertainer from Memphis.
I was there..and..saw.. Elvis..no where..having..no..star .. Elvis being Memphis biggest stars..how sad...I spoke..to another person..while there..about Elvis fans coming together to put a star for Elvis there since the theater was too cheap to do it..I Know Elvis fans would tcb for sure...by the way thanks so much for your videos..I've..been going to Memphis since 1997..now over 30plus times..I enjoy seeing things in the videos that are no there..ty for keeping Elvis..and Memphis history alive...
Interesting. I do genealogy work for my family so part of the fun is taking pictures at the same spot from which they are taken years earlier, sometime 100 years.
@@SpaGuy LOL! I believe Robert Goulet was a Canadian born "crooner" who made it in the states ! He was sort of a variety show kinna guy who made some records etc prolly had a contract with some big recording / movie entertainment company for a gazillion years but his start developed only small brightness n faded out in later years,! Elvis could b very forgiving on occasion like when Merv Griffin s son went to Elvis's dressing room a few minutes before doing a show n called him down quite nastily! But Elvis says "Son I'll forget what u said" and went out to the audience stage ! Hope I got it right
I am a season ticket holder there. I will be asking why he doesn't have a star out there. Oddly I had just walked over that exact spot without any idea that this picture was taken there.
The theater on Union was "Loews State". It actually was open for a while after "Loews Palace" (on south Main) closed. The Theater at Main and Beale Was The Malco, which has been restored and is now the Orpheum.
I think those stars in front of the Orpheum Theatre were in honor of stars who performed in Broadway shows or in concert at the Orpheum and since Elvis never performed there, that’s why there isn’t a star. In my opinion, Elvis needs a bunch of stars all over the city, but I guess the city officials don’t care about my opinion.
The old Malco theater was restored and is now the Orpheum theater. it was restored in the late 1980s. You passed it at the beginning of the video. 6:09 I don't know why they left out the fact that this was the Malco theater in the 50s thru the 70s and early 80s. It had been closed and vacant from the mid 70s until the mid-late 80s when the theater was restored. 7:08 Rufus Thomas was a DJ on WDIA, the first radio station in the US to feature music performed by black artists. Rufus had a national hit recording called "Funky Chicken". His daughter, Carla had a major hit song called "Gee Wiz" also in the 50s. Maybe these "stars" actually made an appearance at the theater, I am not sure, but I think they should give Elvis a star as well, since he is a major reason Memphis is even on the map.
I believe the stars are for people who performed within the building, so I’m assuming Elvis never played there. Rufus Thomas was on Stax records and Is famous for the Funky Chicken. I believe Kallen is an opera star. Tighten up by opening up to other music! Lol
yeah one time I was walking through Memphis there's some old dude pick me up in a black Cadillac 56 Coupe DeVille as we was driving through Memphis he was telling me about his childhood yeah I've been to Memphis
I have to speculate that the Robert Goulet star was deliberately installed directly opposite of the Elvis bronze statue because the theater’s owner[s] may have a grudge against Elvis for some reason. It seems like a deliberate snub.
I actually saw Robert Goulet in concert in NY in the same era as I saw Elvis (1975) and I’m a fan. However, if the Memphis Mafia’s story about what Goulet allegedly did (it relates to Natalie Wood) when Elvis was in Germany then I understand why Elvis hated him.
One more thing: I have Goulet’s rendition of “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You” in my playlist and it contains the lyric (some of it ad libbed), “Oh sure, you may be king and you may possess the world and it’s gold, but gold won’t bring you HAPPINESS, WHEN YOU’RE GROWIN OLD.” I’ve always wondered if Elvis was watching The Merv Griffin Show or The Tonight Show when Goulet came on and sang that. Maybe Elvis thought Goulet was referring to him and became enraged, leading to him shooting the television. That bullet went into the bathroom behind the wall and could’ve killed someone, by the way.
I live in Memphis and I enjoy the videos, but be careful with the comments about the local celebs like Mr Thomas. You'll get these memphians all beside themselves! Lol! As far as blues goes Rufus Thomas was one if the greats! Great stuff my man!
Bull, Memphis needs to do a better job of making their local people national.. I know who Rufus was just didn't hit me at the time.. Thanks for watching, Spa Guy

Its funny Dorothy Hamill is on a star there .I graduated high school with her sister who didnt skate but was really very beautiful !
Excellent! Thank you!

So amazing
This is Lowes Theater on Union ave . I have lived in Memphis my whole life also , plenty of history of Memphis Music . just wanted to help you on Logistics . Tighten up. ! The Truth about Robert Goulet ! BTW this is were Elvis worked as a Usher the Photo on Union . Many get confused. I knew quite a few of the old M.M and had a family member who recorded with Elvis . Thanks for the videos ..
Time well spent.
How come they don't have Elvis' star? I can't believe it 😢
Cool. Beale street. Another iconic area. Got any idea when the buildings on the right side were torn down?
Like your videos from Western Australia
Thanks for watching Ivan...
Thanks for watching Zack, Spa Guy
Enjoyed thanks
Interesting. I do genealogy work for my family so part of the fun is taking pictures at the same spot from which they are taken years earlier, sometime 100 years.
That is really cool.. I love the idea of old and new..
I love your Adam the Woo references peppered throughout your vlogs
Thomas I am a Bog Woo Fan... I want to grow up and be like hims someday.. Thanks for watching, Spa Guy
"These tour buses are a nuisance." while filming a YT tour for us. LOL
LOL..
Rufus Thomas? He work for WDIA in Memphis plus he was a performer look up some of his music
I Know the place , thank you Detective 🕵️♀️. 😁
According to Linda Thompson, Elvis didn't hate Robert G. He just wasn't in the mood to listen to him when he shot at the t.v.
Loews wasn't on corner of Main and Beale it was on Union Ave on eastbound side of street between Front and Main. It is now a parking garage.
Hes Elvis he can park his car anywhere
I believe the stars are for people who performed within the building, so I’m assuming Elvis never played there. Rufus Thomas was on Stax records and Is famous for the Funky Chicken. I believe Kallen is an opera star. Tighten up by opening up to other music! Lol
You are correct..
MALCO THEATER... many Theaters on Main Street back then. LOWE'S PALACE
OK. Can I get an explanation of why Elvis is digging in the officers back pocket. LOL!!
yeah one time I was walking through Memphis there's some old dude pick me up in a black Cadillac 56 Coupe DeVille as we was driving through Memphis he was telling me about his childhood yeah I've been to Memphis
We took pics there last year and this year too
Why did Elvis dislike Robert Goulet?
