Well Ken, not just a little bit easier, a WHOLE lot easier. Speaking here as someone who has spent most of a day removing a stump years ago, and it is not a fond memory. Wish I'd known about these saws back then. Glad you showed this video, really helpful to see how best to go about it.
I’ve been contemplating removing a stump and wondering if I could use a recip saw and your video demonstrates this perfectly, thanks for making this video
thank you so much... I DID THIS a number of yrs ago never filmed it and people laughed and claimed never happened, that it was impossible... I also cut roots from huge trees that were lifting my patio bricks, and it worked grea.... going to spread this around... thank you thank you thank you............
🤗I have 7 crepe myrtle stumps that I need to remove, also near a fence, where I want to start a garden. this video is perfect! And I have to say as always, the best voice on TH-cam!!
I'm so glad you did this video, I planted a rose bush along the side of my house and there were so many roots I chopped them with the shovel I only planted one because it was so tiresome. So I am going to get that saw so that I can finish planting that will make it so easy.. thank you Ken this was right on time for me 👍
That was great work. We dug up some forsythia bushes at a place I once lived and I remember how difficult it was. The trunks weren't nearly as big as what you were taking out today. It took us all day to get two out of the ground. Wish I'd had a reciprocating saw them..lol
This is on my chore list... we've got rain coming this week and I'm hoping that will help soften the ground around the roots I'm going to take after. Thanks for this great, informative vide
Great job. I just got a recip and don’t know why I didn’t get one decades ago. It’s great for pruning and firewood and as your show for stumps. I really prefer the battery so I’m free to roam but realize that portability comes with a higher price. Take care.
A reciprocating saw is a handy dandy tool that was originally invented by or for plumbers to access pipes in tight spots. I've never needed one but a leaf blower has saved me a bundle of time and effort with the ordinarily tedious task of raking. Thank goodness for electricity to power many inventions that eliminated so.much strenuous manual labor.
Very helpful video. We need to remove a bush and the stump that is growing in a corner behind a fence gate and next to the sprinkler controllers. I know I can't call a stump removal service because they won't be able to get one of those big machines in there. People around here use chain saws but those things scare me. I once saw a tree trimmer do serious damage to his hand when a chain saw slipped. I knew there must be another way.
I have done quite a bit with sawzall and stumps. You know what else this is good for? Putting wooden posts in a tree filled ground. Everytime you hit a root with shovel, sawzall, cut, cut, cut, dig, dig, cut, cut, cut, dig, dig, CUT, CUT, CUT! DIG! And you have a nice hole for your wooden post. You are welcome! Man, yeah, we getting older and it is harder and hotter outside. I tried a plain shovel, then invested in 2 'root cutting' shovels. It about killed me the first time I tried to cut all the roots out with one of those super expensive 'root cutting' shovels. I'm too old now and a small woman for that kind of stuff. Ryobi battery powered sawzall to the rescue. I will never go back! I have THREE! I lost one in my house and found it a year after I bought a new one to replace it.
Definitely going to try this tomorrow to finish getting a stump out that I spent half the day working on. One question. I saw that you didn’t worry about the sawzall body getting right into the soil. This doesn’t hurt the unit? Thanks!
Really nice job on the quality of video. The subject matter of the video is quite simple, I would think it would be self evident and not require a video effort, but apparently many people need 'hand holding' for even the most basic things.
I do not see how plunging a reciprocating saw blade into the ground is self-evident. The saw was not designed for that purpose. No need to criticize others for wanting to learn something.
@@KenClick In that case you should also tell them how to plug in the cord and how to wipe their rear end. Is your audience all from the 'special needs school?'
A corded Sawzall is better then a battery saw, it's stronger & more powerful for the job. Battery is convenient but not for all tasks. Mahalo for the video😊
I did that a lot as a lawn sprinkler repairman it helps greatly to use a tree pruning blade and they don't last long so buy several I used the diablo home depot brand...That blade wont handle tough jobs...
Hi, Greetings from Venezuela.... Thanks for sharing this demonstration... Have you tried a Cordless Mini Circular Saw for the same job and compared the results ❓️... I guess there should be an alternative way to do this job efficiently with a Mini Circular Saw. Anyway, I love all kind of Tools... Unfortunately, They are very expensive here...
Don’t get to excited folks these still can take time to do..once you hit rocks and here in PA we are known for our rocks..I’m doing this now and it takes a good hour at least for me.
Wow. My boyfriend has been using a pickax(?) Like the giant one thing... with so much force and it takes him at least 30 minutes to even make a dent before he could pull them from the ground
I've read that cutting through dirt dulls your blade very quickly. Did that happen to you? Maybe they are talking about hitting rocks. A mattock tool helps a lot too.
Doing this eats up your blades, I've never seen such blunt ones before I tried cutting some roots with them! It works great though, and compared to other solutions for removing small stumps it is still pretty economical, even if a blade only lasts a stump or two.
Get a file then sharpen the blade. I never throw away any of those blades they can be resharpened good enough for garden work. You can even edge your grass with them.
There is more than that: Advantage #2 a chainsaw is much heavier, #3 a chainsaw is more dangerous, #4 a chainsaw would throw a lot of dirt back at you, #5 a chainsaw chain comes off and is a hassle to reinstall. 🙂
WE just removed 4 annoying bushes that kept bee hives year after year so we had to try to eliminate 2 problems, but now we have to get the stumps out and so this came just in time. I think my husband bought some stump away, but this is great. What do you do with the soil and dirt when you take plants and stumps out? Does anyone re use the dirt to plant something new? We are new to this, and I feel like it's a waste to throw it away, but not sure what to do with it.
What? You are not in the kitchen making something scrumptious! What a great idea, all for saving time & less pain on the body. Yikes now your wife has to get the mud stains out of your pants.

There’s nothing so satisfying than a bothersome task made easy with the right tool. Great tip and back saver!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have removed over a 100 cypress knees 3:13 are more with a recepricating saw ,they do work great.
Nice use of a reciprocating saw. The sounds of birds in the background was a very nice touch.
Yes, the birds are nice!

Thank you, thank you for this video. I have the EXACT situation that you had and googled reciprocating saw stump removal & found you. This is great.
Glad to be of help! 🙂
I look forward to your videos on how to make biscuits using a reciprocrating saw. :D
Ha! Well, Larry, if I can figure out a way to do that it would make a great video!
Ken is quite the renaissance man. 👍
🤣
HELLO, YOU!
Excellent video. Thanks for showing and explaining so clearly.

Damn! You deserved to do a 'Rocky at the top of the steps' victory dance when you got that sucker out!! Well done!👏
Ha! Thanks! It does make a big difference. (Those who have never dug one out don't understand.)
Nice Ken that works really great. Awesome idea BTY love you an your videos
Thanks for watching!
I need a saw like that. I've got lots of small but tough stumps and one accursed crepe myrtle stump. Thank you for the demonstration.
If this was the only thing I used this saw for, the purchase cost would be worth it to me.
I just did this today...it was alot of fun actually
Yes, it is so much easier!
Good tip , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks, you too!

The saw I'm using has a 12 inch blade. How big would a circular saw need to be to reach down 12 inches?
@@KenClick.....Oh. you are right Sir. I was wrong. Thanks
Don’t get to excited folks these still can take time to do..once you hit rocks and here in PA we are known for our rocks..I’m doing this now and it takes a good hour at least for me.
Did you really expect it to cut through your rocky soil as shown in the video? I had no rocks to deal with.
Wow. My boyfriend has been using a pickax(?) Like the giant one thing... with so much force and it takes him at least 30 minutes to even make a dent before he could pull them from the ground
This method is a game changer!
Hey Ken. Thank you for this video. What workpants are you wearing in this video? Do you recommend them?
Yes, they are very good > Tru-Spec Men's 24-7 Series Original Tactical Pants.
I've read that cutting through dirt dulls your blade very quickly. Did that happen to you? Maybe they are talking about hitting rocks. A mattock tool helps a lot too.
Yes, cutting in the ground dulls the blade.

We have one as well. It’s along the house where it prevents me from using the lawnmower.
This method make removing them a lot easier!
I guess one advantage over a chainsaw for cutting out stumps is that you can stick the saw blade in the dirt without damaging a saw chain.
There is more than that: Advantage #2 a chainsaw is much heavier, #3 a chainsaw is more dangerous, #4 a chainsaw would throw a lot of dirt back at you, #5 a chainsaw chain comes off and is a hassle to reinstall. 🙂
hey man i was wondering will the remaining roots die? you dont have to dig the roots out that are separated from the stump do you?
The roots will die. No need to dig them up. 🙂

You will need soil or something to refill the holes. The stumps & roots may be chopped up and put in the compost bin.
Why do you use the hay bales?
Take a look at straw bale gardening videos. That's what I'm doing.
Could the saw be damaged by hitting a stone in the soil ? Cheers Eddie
The blade could be, but the saw should be alright.
Does that even qualify as a stump?
It could be a moonbeam. 🤣
Might help to leave the stump higher.
✅
My property has too many stone of all sizes. Good idea though.
Thanks for watching!
The younger you are, when you do that, the easier it is. Now, let's try a 24" white oak stump for fun.
I'll leave that one to you Richard. It would make a good video!
