He’s now gone through the entire album, something I have looked forward to since this video. Quite a long watch but it would be super cool to hear you guys’ thought on it. You really made a fantastic album! I only wish I grasped the lyrics some more.
the guitar player for tomb mold does another project called dream unending. if you like this song you should try out some of their songs. song of salvation or secret grief would be a cool react
Hands down AotY for me, I really like their previous material but this album really transcended for me. Hope you end up reacting to the entire album sometime, it's got so much fantastic stuff in it!
Tomb Mold's been on my list for a while to check out. Didn't really know what to expect from them, but it wasn't this! Strong Cynic vibe in the opening jazzy bits before it goes into a more Death-influenced bit with the off-kilter heavy riffing. Lots of cool twists and turns after that with sections that are techier (some bits reminded me of Atheist), others that are proggier, some that are more straight-forward OSDM. Just love the combination of influences, and I can see why this band has gotten so much traction among DM fans. They're clearly a band that's absorbed influences from the genre's best and mixed them into their own potent concoction. Definitely interested in exploring their discography soon.
Tomb Mold was one of the big bands to herald the coming of the 'new wave of old school death metal' i believe. This album takes a lot of insipartion from the early 90s progressive death metal like Cynic, later Death albums and Nocturnus. While still of course having their own twist. This might be my favourite album of last year. It has a lot of neat proggy weirdness and technical playing but also appreciation for good melodies and riffs. Sometimes a headbanger of a riff is all you need! This is my favourite song on the album as well. The last two minutes are absolutely magical. The rest of the album isnt as jazzy but definitely worth a listen. Thanks for the reaction! A nice way to start the day ^^
I’m a death metal nerd so this whole album was incredible for me, especially this song. One of my favorite albums of the year. There are some jazzier moments on The Enduring Spirit of Calamity as well. The vocalist is also the drummer which is why his voice is much more breathy. As a vocalist I can confirm that sitting down makes growling a LOT harder, not to mention drumming as well has to be insanely difficult. I enjoy the tone he’s created for the band, the whole composition is warm. I’ll record some vocal samples on my phone, the sound can vary a lot from very small choices made even before production.
The Enduring Spirit was my most listened to album of the year, and Fate’s Tangled Thread, the song that plays after this one was my most played. I like Tomb Mold’s previous work but the musicality on this one is just so good.
I've mentioned it recently, but I think you'd love Spectral Voice's Eroded Corridors and even their two singles from this year! The composition isn't crazy technical but everything works so well and the vocals are immediately unique! Eroded Corridors has tons of harmonies and small things you don't notice on first listen :-)
Wonderful stuff! I'm usually not a big fan of growling over mellower music (thus, Morningrise is my least favourite Opeth album). But this song is so great that I don't really mind 😊 @Bryan: Would this growling have had a chance of getting your approval a couple of years ago?.... Really enjoyed your enjoyment as usual!
answering your question: the whole album is like this. some songs are more aggressive than others, but you are guaranteed to get a weird twist in each song.
Purists will sneer but Tomb Mold is up there with Blood Incantation for my favorite modern death metal groups. You'll be disappointed to learn that this track is the most overtly jazzy and clean on the record, but it's still a fantastic record worth listening to and I'm glad you enjoyed this track. I'm not sure if you've already reacted to the band Cynic but this comes straight out of their textbook so you should probably check them out as well.
Check out Horrendous if you haven't. Probably my favorite contemporary DM act. Love Blood Incantation and I suspect I'm going to love Tomb Mold whenever I do a discography run for them. They definitely have a more Cynic-vibe going by this track. Horrendous is more influenced by Death. Can't go wrong with either influence tbh!
Again, high quality analysis and reaction! While it's still not your cup of tea, I'm sure you do understand why people love death metal so much - because of it's high energy that keeps you pumping and going forward, unstoppable force, I may say! You should check out Cognizance - Fever Dream, from Upheaval album (it's a top work album-wise, progressive-technical death metal, energetic one). They have new album soon)
First off: great choice for modern Death Metal. Sick album, complex, diverse, heavy. On the other hand, I really hope you give Slugdge's latest album Esoteric Malacology a listen. Such a unique approach towards modern blackend Death metal with just enough cool proggy elements
I would recommend the album, of all Death metal release of 2023 this is my favorite*Death metal* records from last year, but it is not my all time favorite album from 2023, but it is on my Top 10.
I can’t truly put into words how much I love this band (I’m a bit biased with the profile picture). I would love to see more some reactions to any of their discography, especially anything from LP2 (Manor of Infinite Forms).
Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice channel did this "Throat cam" video with Will Ramos (Lorna Shore) where Will got his vocal chords scoped while performing harsh vocals. I think on that video the harsh vocals are very raw sounding without effects. So it might be worth checking out: th-cam.com/video/Ua8SuWNPrLE/w-d-xo.html
Tomb Mold started out playing old school, cavernous death metal, but on this latest album, they really took a giant leap forward into the Cynic/Athist progressive/technical realm of death metal. The album would have been a stong 2023 AOTY contender for me, had it not been for Alkaloid, who released an even better progessive/technical death metal masterpiece with their amazing 'Numen' album.. .
im an extremely anal elitist that hates everything including tomb molds entire discog up to this point. but this was my song of the year. listened to it hundreds of times. i spent the entire fall walkin round mountains looking for mushrooms while listening to this. definitely a life highlight. album is good too but this song really touched a higher level.
@@DiiNovensiles yeah i dont like conventional stuff typically. their older albums all feel very boring to me. though, primordial is okay, as the production is a lot more raw. the two after feel like very conventional dm along with very clean commercial production and i dont like it. on this one they got a lot more proggy. but also its not like i think prog death is inherently better than basic stuff. not at all actually. but this hit the nail on the head i think. i shouldnt have said elitist because that conveys some sort of typical standard. im just very particular about what i like. most everything goes in the bin
I saw this on a lot of 'best of 2023 lists' and was unfamiliar and spent a while going over that album and I can't think of any band I feel more conflicted about. It's so well-constructed but I'm begging for something more than just a death growl the whole time. Don't even dislike the vocals talent-wise but everything else in the music is going hog wild and the singer is doing the same thing the whole time. There's no anguished screams or madness or sweetness to it, to me it sounds emotionless and flat. Even when he takes it up to a higher register it just sounds like a sigh.
You have a point from your perspective, but sometimes, when I had such thoughts, for example, I always asked myself - could I imagine something more fitting than these vocals? Maybe more instrumentally oriented release could do the trick, but this stuff still needs those. This particular release has old Tomb Mold in the core, which was more OSDM, but they also added their experience from Dream Unending amd Daydream Plus projects - so that ends as some interesting mix of those. I see it as a cool progression from previous releases, as they are still in the making of the new sound.
Fair point, but I think it’s equally as important to note that the vocalist is also the drummer. I can only imagine it’s already very difficult to death growl and play drums like that at the same time, let alone mixing in other vocal techniques.
@@wallbarr Oh wow I didn't know they had a singer/drummer setup. Good growl, too. I guess I just wish there was more melody in the vocals, and I bet I'd cream over this album if it had a different voice harmonizing with it.
Really cool track, the way they build into that big harmonious ending after a quiet section containing the same composition is like cocaine to me. Loved the generally melodic riffing too. This is the kind of death metal I can get down with
it’s unusual for me to be this critical on this channel, but this is everything I dislike about the direction in which the metal is headed. not a single cool riff, just some weird meandering guitar picks stitched together and lackluster technicality to sum it all up. also, the lyrics and concepts are pretentious and dull. false metal in its finest, whatever I mean by that.
Hi, I play guitar in this band! Really enjoyed this video, thanks for the analysis!
Thank you so much for your guys hard work on this record. Its truly something special.

Other two musicians from Tomb Mold have a project called Daydream Plus. Search for Daydream Plus - Secret Research ;)
Drummer is also the vocalist its kinda wild to see live.

it sounds like a vektor + blood incantation ripoff

Alex terrible has a whole series where he does vocals recorded with only his cellphone to show there isn't any effects.
YES! Thanks! I need to look into these immediately.
it's deathcore so there will be some different techniques used. alex doesn't do the death metal growl.

That's an interesting stance given their old stuff is much more conventional. Not standout enough to your ears?

Just wanted to say, for me the best death metal song ever possibly, is Left Hand Path, by Entombed!
Someone just requested that track! It should be on the channel in the next few weeks.
Suggested it last time we had a poll for a death metal week, but it never got featured.

To think people laughed when I said extreme metal is the opposite of smooth metal

"false metal" lmfao. Go listen to the same three caveman riffs recycled for the past 20 years. Maybe that's the "true" metal "soul" after all.
