Thanks for your review. Finally a review about the Mackie. It was overdue.
I have the Mackie and the MKE 600. I really don't think the sound of the 600 is just a little better than the sound of the Mackie. The 600 isolates unwanted sounds much more than the Mackie and it is less noisy as well.
I shoot with iPhone, not photographic cameras. I also shoot with ENG cameras but that is a different matter.
I tested several on-camera shotguns and watched several reviews. I have no doubt that the Sennheiser MKE 600 is the best on-camera shotgun for iPhone out there. I expect the same to be true for photographic cameras but can't be sure.
Sound quality apart: there are situations where I would use the Mackie, not the 600. iPhones need a lot of gain and if I am using a small cage or the Freewell Sherpa grip then I will use the Mackie because of its built-in gain and, also very important when shooting with an iPhone, the headphone port.
I will use the 600 mainly with a Beachtek Audio Interface when I will connect the mic via XLR cable. I also have the 400 but the Mackie made it more or less redundant. If I need to go really small then I would use the 400 but I am still debating it with myself...
P.S. I shot a review about the Mackie early this year but am still to edit it. I don't like to narrate because I am awful in front of a camera. I make mistakes even when reading from a script!

Thanks, Umberto, and glad you liked the review. For me, noise levels aren't so much an issue with on-camera shotgun mics because environmental noise usually overwhelms any self-noise (unless it's outrageous). But for studio use, this would definitely be something to consider. For the Mackie vs Sennheiser question, I'm more concerned about frequency response and ease of use. But yes, I agree that the MKE-600 wins the quality battle. And then I pick it up.... :)
If it makes you feel any better, I make lots of mistakes even with a script! I find that the last take is usually the best one though, so I've gotten in the habit of editing "backwards".

I'm glad my video kept you from buying something that wasn't right for you! It's a nice mic though. :)

It does sound good and it’s nearly half the price here in South Africa when compared to the Senheiser MKE 600

Hi, Matthew. Thank you very much for the video. I found it very useful. I can't find information on the self noise level of the Mackie EM-98MS, but I know that the Sennheiser MKE-600 is 15 dB. Could you tell me if you have noticed the Mackie being louder than the Sennheiser? And if so, is it much louder? Thank you so much. Best.

Glad you found it helpful! I can't find any self-noise info on the Mackie either (and I can't find signal-to-noise ratio for MKE-600). I have not experienced any noticeable noise with the Mackie. Ambient noise has always masked any self-noise for any mic I use outdoors or in a non-studio environment. I would have no concerns using either mic from a noise perspective.

Hmm, yeah it does. Different shockmount but the rest of the mic is very similar.
