Firstly, it’s great to see your beautiful reef back on track. Secondly, I totally agree that it’s easy for reefers to forget that the success of a live, closed environment, like a reef aquarium, starts with the building blocks of reef life. We get preoccupied with elements, nutrients and water chemistry and ignore the absolute fundamentals of the food chain. This video is a great reminder to never forget that the stability of a reef starts with the building blocks of marine life.
Great video Sam. There are so many benefits of adding live phytoplankton to the reef tank a couple of times a week. Keep the corals and pods happy as well.
Nice Sam I found that after adding live phyto a 15cm patch of red cyano went overnight after adding the phyto and never came back. I also dose prodibio bacteria vials fortnightly few different strains of bacteria in them. I used them to help my tank recover in double dose when I had bacterial stn and rtn sps large die off , seemed to help so stuck with it for biodiversity 👍👍👍
Excellent video Sam. What are your current levels ?! Last video they were something around 180?! Would these levels kill any of the new bacteria or organisms you add?!
thanks mate, the levels are back down to where they should be - about 0.06ppm. Still a touch high, but actually within the recommended range - so shouldn't kill off anything I'm adding with the phyto :)
Man.. im interested on how you get those blue-green chromis that big?. I know they usually have uronema. Did you treat them before introducing them to your display tank?. What typ of blue green chromis are they? Where did they come from? Africa or the indo?
they were a decent size when I got them, but they've grown nicely. I had some left over from my previous display that went in once this tank was cycled and I added a few more. I believe they're aussie blue green chromis, but I could be wrong. No treatment, I've never had a uronema problem although I hear it is common with chromis
Hi Parker, is there a good source which lists each chemical element and what to do to decrease/increase it? I found FaunaMarin, but their list is not totally clear. I d prefer a non-biased, non-commercial answer ;-) (i have a problem with too high zinc and i can’t find the source, I tried everything).
Yeah good question, I am not sure if there is (not saying there isn't, I just don't know of one). Iodine will oxidise out of the tank over time, just not quickly enough at the levels it was at. Zinc can come from RODI water or you could potentially have dropped a bolt in the sump? Any magnets in your pumps breaking down?
I’m curious what salt do you use? I had the same issue and I solved it by switching to Red Sea blue bucket, it actually took me a few months to figure out it was iodine, that’s one parameter we don’t test for often unless it’s through a icp test
There a product called bacto balls that you just drop in your filter socks when you change it. They do a steady time release of bacteria so you don’t have to dose every day and you avoid spikes. I’ve noticed a real difference in the cleanliness of my tank over the last month. I also am a big fan of phyto. I noticed my clowns and cardinals spawn when I dose phyto but stop when I stopped. Also the pop population goes crazy. I’m going to try growing my own because most products are so overpriced and it’s so easy.
yeah I do ICP tests every month. I have a salifert iodine test kit, but to be honest, it is not overly user friendly and really just gives me an indication of if the level is sky high or ok...
How are your nitrates looking? Adding all that bacteria and Phyto is going to drop them a number I reckon. Also, branching off from that. I have heard of reefers at some point needing to dose nitrates due to the high coral load of their tank, have you thought about this at all?
My nitrates are staying steady at around 2ppm, so haven’t had any issues there yet. That being said, I have some large fish and I’m feeding them quite a lot :)
Yeah I leave UV running when dosing, nonissue. It would stop reproduction of some of the smaller cells that pass through UV, but nothing to the point of switching it off (in my opinion anyway)
Normally enjoy your content, But man this one felt like a Paid Commercial, Did you actually go look at their sales page? VIBRANT for $72.00 are you kidding me, I can get it for $26.00 , a Turkey baster for 10.50. Those are just a couple. And being completely honest this looks a lot of Algaebarn products just slapped with a different label. If you want to be sponsored and make money on the channel no big deal many do it, Just tell people up front. I actually watched to try and find out what happened with the tank, how it was corrected and how phyto was being used to correct it. Had I know upfront this was an infomercial I WOULD NOT have watched, hate click-bait man.
@@ParkersReef Wasnt the discount code Sam... It was the price period, I mean 3 times the cost for Vibrant is insanity, you are really straight forward, honest and helpful. I had to ask if you looked because that is just insane to be charging that along with the other things I mentioned.

You didn't even show you adding to your tank.
In Europe you'd be obliged to mention if you get compensated in any way for product placement. I think there's nothing wrong monetizing your channel as long as you're transparent about it 😉

Ah that's awesome man! I feel so many of us under appreciate the value of phyto and all other invisible items in the food chain!
Will an aquarium require a consistent dosage to be beneficial long term or will a single bag dosed accordingly have long lasting benefits ?
A single dose is good, frequent dosing is great, consistent dosing is best - but don’t stress, anything will be better than nothing!
Thanks Sam! You must of read my mind. Iv been looking into culturing my own for a while, now I'm starting! Ordered some cultures

Natural salt water and I tested it, results came back perfect at 0.06ppm

Common phyto in LFS are mainly nano strand. Do you reckon we can culture these 7 strands successfully at home?
to be honest, I have no idea, I just buy them :D
But if you talk to the team at aquatic live foods, they will likely be able to advise!

Does phytoplankton increase your nitrates of added
Nope. Live phyto actually consumes nitrates and phosphates.
Be interesting to know where that amount of iodine came from.
yeah, wish I knew too...
Would you still use your gfo when dosing this stuff or would it kill it off. Same with the doctor dims.
Yeah absolutely, won’t kill it off at all
@@ParkersReef awesome and great video by the way.
Thanks mate!
When do you dose phytoplankton? After lights out or during day? I dose after lights out when all sps polyps are open to max.
I dose it in the afternoon :)
@ 7.26 what is that tang in the bottom right corner?
White tail kole?
Great video, thanks for the coupon code 👍 the uv doesn't affect it? keep running before and after dosing?

@@ParkersReef when you dose it do you do it straight out of the fridge or let it get to room temperature and do you turn pump or skimmer off?
Do you have any better ideas of where the iodine came from?
nothing solid yet...
nice - 7... wow!
yeah its a pretty complex range of phytos!
Never, ever, EVER let your tank hear you say "all is well"!
