  • Bad news, I was scammed. Turns out the 1997 Fountain 32 Fever Speed Boat I purchased to fix up had a rotten transom... worst part is the guy who sold it to me knew the entire time. It's an understatement to say I was devastated. Disappointment, anger, defeat were all things I felt when I discovered the soft fiberglass and wet wood. That being said, I could not stand to take a loss like this on a project, so I reevaluated and came up with a plan. This may be hard to watch for the boat enthusiasts and Fountain lovers out there, but let this be a lesson to all. ALWAYS SURVEY YOUR POTENTIAL BOAT PURCHASE BEFORE YOU BUY IT!

If your intention was to sell the hull to someone that wants to fix it, what good is it for someone to go have to re-source everything you parted off of it?

      People pay good money for nice parts but nobody will buy a project boat unless it’s practically free or you lie like the seller did. He probably got only a couple grand for the hull but a lot more off the parts than if he sold a project boat intact.

    Similar thing happened to us when we bought our Baja 272 in 2013 from Texas. The website claimed they had certified technicians and said everything was ok! But when we put the boat in the water it started to take on water. Come to find out that all the wood in the transom was completely rotted and falling apart. We had to have the whole thing redone! Then the website we bought it from changed their description when we threatened to sue them. Our Baja is still here! Only problem is the floor has a soft spot, but we will get that fixed in the Spring.

If you dont seal the core properly or design the structure well, it will rott. In these cases even if they were made with epoxy the situation would be the same. Sealing everything is the keyword and ofcourse if u use modern nonrotten materials instead of wood thats different case also.

  • @NeverEnoughPyro40
    @NeverEnoughPyro40 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    First of all you weren’t scammed, It is quite possible that the previous owner did not know about the issues! Secondly Fountain is not known for their rotting transoms and stringers, Those issues can be found on almost any manufactures boat that is 25 to 30 years old and was assembled using wood for core material! There is only one person to blame and that is you, You probably should have brought someone with you who has at least some knowledge about boats! You said you went around the boat and did the knock test, Where did you learn that because that is not the way a Marine Surveyor checks for rot! I think you said you drove like12 to 14 hours to purchase a project boat with no motors for around $15,000, You could have at least spent $100 on Amazon and purchased a moisture meter! Due to the lack of motors you really didn’t have to worry about inspecting anything mechanical, Which only leaves the hull for you to inspect! 🤦‍♂️ I don’t want to be mean but you are trying to put the blame on Fountain and the seller, When in reality it is all on you! If you are that Incompetent when it comes to inspecting a boat how do you ever expect to do a full refit on a boat? I hope you are aware that boats and the installation and assembly of almost everything is highly regulated! Boats are not like cars where you can do whatever you want!

    I don’t think you got scammed. I just believe you didn’t do your due diligence getting a moisture reader would probably be the first thing you should buy before going to look at used boats.

    Late 90s into the early 2000s, Reggie was pumping out boats like crazy. Fountain was no longer the low volume custom builder and basically became the Bayliner of Go Fasts. Sorry to hear you got a less than good boat.

    24:31 I don't know but I think any boat with wood cores will rot out if people let water in. There's fasteners all up and down that stringer.

    Those are badass boats but notoriously have transom rot. Not a big deal if you can do glass work.

    Are you still parting this out? If so what’s left. I have a 91 32 fever I’m building and she needs steering components and exhaust manifolds if you have any. Preferably Gil, ss stainless.

    SO Over dramtic dude, Alot easier to just re-stringer and transom it and be the guy that did a step by step programe lasting for a few weeks. Not overly much harder then parting out etc

    Not Scammed. I buy old vehicles and equipment all the time. Fully expect to do repairs. Older stuff is built far better with few exceptions. Most new stuff is overpriced garbage. Engineered to fall apart and need constant maintenance or replacement.
    You could have discovered this problem, then negotiated the correct value and worked out a deal. Seller wins and you get an expensive education.
