Dear lovely sewing friends just a little reminder that I'm asking for your thoughts on what you'd like to see on my channel. I'm interested in how you feel as like me lots of you recognize this is a complex issue. I'm not casting judgement on anyone including myself (as she opens another parcel!!) so please do not do that either. Love Sam xx

I like it when makers are thoughtful about what they buy. I like seeing fabric that people have bought, but if it’s a massive haul every time they vlog then it becomes a bit relentless for me and I actually get put off episodes that have haul in the title now. I start to think, do they really need all that fabric? Do they really need all the clothes they’re going to make from that fabric? I like it when you speak about your fabric in context of your plans. And also when you go thrifting and show us your finds. And you’re really clear about what clothes you’re making and why. So your makes and resulting wardrobe are clearly well thought through, rather than just for the sake of it.

You have a good point about fabric hauls. I’ve been shying away from “haul” videos. My funds are limited. My storage is limited. My lifespan is also limited. I’m trying to do more thrifting and modifying my own clothes.

I personally do not watch fabric or pattern hauls nor do I put them out on my channel. No judgement on anyone who loves them, but they make me feel very uncomfortable, especially when the vlogger just does hauls and you basically never see anything they sew. I love sewing channels, I love to watch sewing videos and I really have no interest in watching someone “collect” fabrics. I do love these thought-provoking and discussion starting vlogs though. 😊

I no longer watch hauls. Nor vlogs with an advert every five minutes. My favourites are makes videos with chat about the pattern we hat went well and what didn't. My fav vlog was the one showing the quilted jackets with pros and cons.

I watch fabric hauls because I am limiting what I buy and seeing someone else’s new fabric scratches that itch for me. It in no way encourages me to go out and buy. After all, new fabric is REALLY about possibilities, and that’s why I crave it

I really enjoyed your video. You put words to thoughts we all have about purchases in today's world, not just sewing related. Whether you call it a haul or not doesn't change what it is. If TH-cam likes the term haul and makes your video available to more people that's a good reason to keep the term. We each have our own context to the amount of fabrics etc we have. Don't fret so much about being a "bad" influence. You are just showing us possibilities we may have not thought about. One could even say you are doing a community (sewing) service by showing us these beautiful fabrics. Again thank you for a thoughtful and fun video.

Very thought provoking video, thank you so much for letting us join you in this dilemma. Personally, I love a fabric haul. It doesn't make me want to buy either that fabric or indeed, any fabric! I like seeing the enthusiasm and hearing the plans. We could go down a rabbit hole of doubt if we are not careful - should we think about doing plans videos, in case some people feel they must have the patterns and fabric? It's hard to strike a balance, but you do an amazing job as an ambassador of mindful and thoughtful sewing and shopping. Your ethics are very high and you are definitely doing your bit to help us really think about what we sew. Your Me Made May videos actually changed my outlook and I sew much more thoughtfully now. Keep up the good work, don't worry and happy sewing you absolute star ❤

Very interesting chat and something I have been thinking about for a while. I am, like many a return to sewing sewer, and initially loved watching the sewing community on TH-cam. However lately I am frustrated by them. I love to see what someone is buying or making but not when they are an ambassador for various fabric/pattern companies encouraging the viewer to buy. Many are now just influencers and leave me cold. But it is a dilemma because I still want to see what is out there and be inspired. I do have to remind myself that I want to make my clothes to be more individual but find myself being sucked in by the latest pattern and beautiful fabrics . so potentially looking like every other sewer! Really is the Sword of Damacles!

If fabric haul videos make you uncomfortable then maybe share as and when you make the fabrics into garments. I appreciate that you always shop around and use a mixture of re-purposed, charity shop, remnants etc. I also appreciate that you show how you style your outfits and try to ensure that you wear what you make. Nothing more wasteful than making lots of garments that you don’t wear. 😊

I’ve literally been thinking about this today before watching your vlog. I don’t mind the term ‘haul’ being used but I do prefer seeing purchases that are more mindful. There seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment of seeing huge hauls followed by substantial destashes. I wonder if people are more influenced than they realise.
Last year I tracked the quantity of fabric I had at the start and end of the year, hoping to reduce the ‘stash’. At the end of the year I found I’d actually increased it by 50% which was a bit of a wake up call. I realised I’d been influenced by the endless sales / dead stock drops / destashes. Now I’m aware, it affects me much less. I’m sewing what I have and only making the odd thoughtful purchase here and there.

I’m stopped at the twenty minute mark because I don’t want to forget what I’m thinking and feeling. So if you cover this after that point … thanks ☺️. Personally I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a frugal haul, so maybe that’s an option to call your hauls… frugal hauls show ideas of how to be frugal which in itself has a positive impact on waste so if you’re showing something new to learn, new considerations etc then your impact is positive… WIN. The ideas with the patterns I think could be a series in itself. Take the latest new make… say the Fleur blouse. Last year or early this year I received a pattern from New Look N6743 with a magazine subscription with Love Sewing (I stopped it early spring as I have too many patterns that I don’t need). I think that the pattern I have could be easily adapted to look like the Fleur blouse as in your pattern hacking. Maybe you could look at the latest fashion patterns and maybe do a collab with other vloggers to see who can achieve the same look using patterns either in their stash or that have been destashed, possibly from magazines or PDF that they have already printed out.
Anything that gets people thinking outside of the ‘buy a new one’ box and into the ‘be creative’ box.
    I shall continue your vlog… before I forget to do that… (Menopausal/ADHD brain 🧠🤦🏻‍♀️🤫🤫🤫). X

Sam your video was something I have been thinking about lately. A lot of TH-camrs buy fabric, but then they also do a lot of “destashing”, so it seems like a constant buy and sell. Before I started watching your videos, I had bought some fabric from the charity shop, but now I buy more fabric from the charity shop, especially if its wool because wool is pricey as you know. I would like to make a coat. I also buy items that I can repurpose more than I did before. A lot of these items I believe would not have sold. For example, a single bedsheet that’s a really nice bedsheet. A lot of people are not going to buy just a bedsheet by itself. I am using this bedsheet for wearable muslin. I don’t know if you’ve heard about Joann fabrics in America, but they are in danger of closing up forever and that would be a shame. Where I live in Wisconsin there are not a lot of fabric shops that sell apparel fabric mostly just quilting cotton. Joanne’s also carries a lot of other items for sewing that you would not find at these quilting shops. So I feel like I want to keep going there and getting things but not overdo it. I try to buy things for projects that I know I want to make and general need in my life. Thanks for the chat. 😊

I just so appreciate your thoughtful 'dialoguing' with us, particularly on this subject as it is something I have grappled with myself. Personally, I have been less and less inclined to watch haul videos lately. While I don't begrudge influencers buying all the fabric and sharing it with the world, I find that, for me, it's not always helpful for me to watch as I am not in a position to do the same. I don't like the feeling of wanting (dare I say, 'needing') more than I have or can afford, that such videos can sometimes conjure in me. However, this is just something I've noticed in myself and as a result I have adjusted my viewing choices accordingly. I hope that makes sense. In saying all that, I absolutely LOVE watching makes and plans videos. And chatty, contemplative videos like this one are also a treat. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Sam. As usual, a great 'Steamy Chat' over the ironing board. There were so many ideas that I went to the trascript. Thought you might like to know that Madras fabric came up as 'MadAss.' When a haul gets painful to watch for me is if it's apparent that the person has an addiction to buying fabric or it's just fabric after fabric after fabric for a long time without any content around creaivity ( for example, what the plans are, how things will be combined, what pattern or modifications might work, how the colors will help build a palette, etc.).
I really like the sword of Damocles application -- as sewists and creators and consumers of fabric, that sword is hanging by one single thread of horsehair over us at the banquet of fabric offerings, showing that we are all balancing on the edge of too much, too little, or just right fabric (and sometimes overwhelmed with the joy a fabric gives us or all the ideas that pop up when considering whatever raw material we will be working with, be it a thrifted item, fabric not used by others, new fabric, deadstock or apparently not deadstock fabric).
Regarding fabric sewing and shopping for emotional support during a challenging time, I think you hit the nail on the head: within moderation, try to limit that coping mechanism to the peaks of the challenging time rather than the whole duration. Sometimes that's very hard to do; I think we all need to use all our resources to get through the challenge with as little stress as possible. It's part of giving ourselves grace: permission to indulge without edging over into addiction. Thank you very much for bringing these issues into the open and the lovely discussion it's created, and for the lovely approach to life that you share with all of us, Antonia

I am glad you are avoiding the ‘haul’ - the celebration of excess does make me feel uncomfortable, whilst I really enjoy thoughtful content that is aware of the impact that our shopping has, and the way our lifestyle does not have to constantly ‘feed the machine’.
Of course there is no perfect solution, but I appreciate you sharing your principles and values with us, using pre-loved material, seeking independent retailers, using and adapting patterns we have - and maybe even clothes we already own but don’t wear etc. Love the way you can take a sideways look at things we might not think of.
The way you model your confident and stylish ‘look’ without constantly having to buy new is inspiring, keep up the good work!
And as for all your material arriving at once, you can explain why that happened - and being human not perfect is much more real and enjoyable to watch 😊

Hi Sam, wow, what a thought provoking vlog. I do not think I have ever done a fabric ‘haul’, one reason being that I do not like buying fabric on line. Being old fashioned, I like to feel and generally handle fabric and I I am not always happy with fabric when I have ordered online e.g. in lock down. We are quite luckily in having a number of fabric outlets around ( South Yorkshire) and I generally have a project in mind when I go fabric shopping. Like you, charity shops are my go-to although I rarely actually find lengths of fabric. But I did buy two dresses yesterday - size 30 -( total of £4.50) asI loved the fabric and knew there would be plenty for me. Also use duvet covers when I see them. But to be honest, how many clothes do I need? I have been retired nearly 2 years now, and while always out, do not need too many clothes. So my problem is more - I want to sew but do not need more clothes. I used to make Panto costumes for the local Panto, but that ended up being too much in too short a time , and I was working at the time. I did enjoy the creative aspect. I have also sewn bags, but how many bags does one family need! Having said all of that I love watching sewing vlogs and seeing what others are making and their fabric choices. One more point, about patterns. Like you I resist new patterns as so many are basically the same, especially at the moment - ‘ buffet’ style dresses with tiers which do not suit me. I won’t name any here but so many could be hacked from one pattern. Keep up the good work.

I'm a rather new sewist, and one that has never been very into clothes or fashion, but would really like the clothes I do wear to fit and feel better on my body. So, I suspect at some point, I'm going come to a place where I don't really need much for myself, so then, what will I sew and who might I sew for? There must be opportunities to sew for others in charitable ways. I know some of the TH-camrs do a dress a girl campaign, and perhaps nearby facilities for the elderly, or local agencies for those in need might be an avenue for sewing projects that would benefit others. I'm not terribly skilled yet, but these are some thoughts I've had for future use.

Thank you for this! I love that you're bringing this into conversation. I don't exactly feel pressured by haul videos but I do think they normalise buying massive amounts of fabric and that probably influences me subconsciously when I'm shopping... I do get as bit annoyed when sewing influencers show off their fabric hauls and unboxings and then it turns out the majority were gifted to them for promotional purposes, must be nice. I really love plans videos though because they're inspiring and could motivate shopping from the stash or wherever.

Hi sam, thanks for this deep thinking vlog. I hope that most of us like to think about the impact of our sewing on the planet - hard not to when you see scrap mountain piling up. I also think that hauls take sewing away from the action of sewing and more into the consumerist act of buying fabrics. I am regularly overwhelmed by my stash, and am really trying (and sometimes failing) to make a dent in it and confront the overwhelm, rather than just looking at new virtual fabrics online. Your vlogs help with this as you are so inspiring mixing and matching fabrics, showing your creative pattern hacking thought process etc.
If i am truly honest, Some haul vlogs make me feel bad for the person hauling as you can see they are suffering too from too much stuff and once it is hauled… where does it go? A familiar feeling to me too. I think edging away from hauls and towards the true creativity of sewing is a good and more sustainable thing for our hobbies and our mental health, and despite not being on youtube, it is something i’m trying to do too. Thanks for everything x

It is a very interesting discussion to be had. There is the balance between being environmentally conscious and conscious of influencing people and then ensuring you have enough earnings from TH-cam to make it worth the sacrifice of time.
Maybe film as you receive the fabric and then say do a “haul” video quarterly. I’d use the term still as you justify each purchase. You aren’t buying masses and masses and then not using it. It’s just a word. Haul videos are fun and at some point we do have to take responsibility for our own spending.

Interesting discussion and found myself agreeing in so many ways. I do however feel uncomfortable watching haul videos where as fast as someone destashes, new fabrics are being purchased, to add to a stash that, as someone wrote on an earlier comment, will out live them anyway. How much money is expensed by purchasing fabric, storing it for months /years and selling on for a fraction of the price - madness. I do have to admit that i have a tendancy to do this, i just don't destash. And well done on turning down the printer, as with other items being promoted the item was expensive and the cost to purchase new paper rolls extortionate. I do have some sympathy for the vloggers who are trying to earn an income though. Btw the tiger fabric is also sold by Simply Fabrics in Brixton who do a lot of Indian fabrics (£10 p m).

Hi Sam, I really enjoy all your videos and the podcast. I appreciate your thoughtfulness on this topic as I too try to be mindful of my choices with purchases and makes that I'm passionate about... Having said that, I really enjoy a good "haul" video especially when you explain (as you did) all the details of why such a big one this time. Here in my part of Canada we really don't have many options for reasonable fabric purchases. Online tends to be very pricey. For this reason I LOVE seeing all my British sewing friends share their lovely purchases and plans. Makes videos are also really fun for me because there are so few people in my area who garment sew. It's a lonely hobby in my area and I just enjoy watching you talk about whatever you're working on or buying. So I say "Keep on doing what you're doing!" P.S. I'm looking forward to seeing how you transition your wardrobe into fall and which colours you use. Even though I'm in a completely different colour palette (I sew mostly warm autumn colours), I really like seeing all your bright colours and how your style them.

  • @IamQueenMal

i don't like hauls, they trigger me for buying stuff. i really rarely buy anything, and that's why - after watching "stash updates" (the name doesn't matter) - i feel no good with myself (my limited wallet / my low productivity / my skills as a creator) and... i think about buying stuff... it's a vicious circle. it's not a problem with sewists but with human psychology and how turbo-capitalism uses it.
i've heard the idea that these are two separate hobbies: creating and collecting - i'm here (as a viewer on yt in general) for the first one, but many channels seem to don't see the difference: under the cover of creation and inspiration present their audience the outcome of losing their control with shopping caused by stress in a broad sense and pass it on and/or cooperation with the company = regular advertising.
and one word about small businesses: i appreciate supporting them and try to do so, but we should not forget that overconsumption of their products is still overconsumption, and cooperations/giving away products is marketing / advertising.
in conclusion, my point is: i have no problem with watching new patterns/fabrics/other stuff when makers present their projects (in wip or fo form) at these angles - then the acquisitions gain meaning and are targeted to human processing capabilities :)

I think at this stage if we are actually being considered and mindful about what we're consuming we are heading in the right direction. Progress not perfection, as you say!
I personally avoid haul videos if nothing else is mentioned, I struggle enough with overbuying without being tempted - perhaps describing it as a look book (which in my head is more about inspiration) or a review of the store? A look book of fabrics for xyz season or event? Or like show and tell, or a tresure hunt? My favourite videos are the ones talking about what you're planning to make with what and reviewing things you make. Particularly love the ones talking about what you made to fill a need in your wardrobe or address a problem - but I enjoy all your videos!

I enjoyed watching your thought process shopping your stash video you did. It made me think about how you see fabric into garments which expanded my imagination. You use a lot of new, used & remnants so you have a great balance. Don’t belt yourself up, we are all trying to be mindful & enjoy our hobby which supplies our wardrobe. I hardly buy clothes nowadays as I am learning to sew better & I am now conscious of making my makes work together & more purposeful. You have inspired me as I have been watching all your videos. So long ramble but I say enjoy your sewing number one and you inspire us which we all sew because we love it & it helps with our stresses of life & you bring us enjoyment watching your videos.

Hi Sam, I enjoy your vlogs! The ironing boards chats is a fun idea. You brought up many interesting thoughts. I don't mind a fabric haul vlog within reason. I like the ones where people are buying mindfully and discuss what they will make. I'm working on using my stash and buying more mindfully myself. A fabric haul vlog doesn't make me want to buy more. I don't care for pattern hauls of big four patterns from Joann's on sale.

I love that you do these thought provoking videos. I’m trying to think more carefully about the fabric that I buy, and agree that there’s a danger of becoming a “fast sewist “ just like buying lots of fast fashion, which I deliberately avoid. On the other hand, I did enjoy seeing what you bought! Hypocrite, moi? 😊

I don't have strong feelings about fabric 'hauls' / show and tells - I like looking and shopping vicariously but it doesn't often send me to a shop unless I have a project in mind that would suit. I think I've only done that maybe three or four times in ten years. I tend to binge buy and then take months off purchasing depending on my general mood, so the self-medicating probably does apply!

I like seeing hauls tbh as I will often see fabric I didn’t know about and also fabric shops I didn’t know about. I don’t think they influence me if I’m not in the mood anyway so I’m not pressured. I do try to recycle stuff a lot and love that process. I do have a lot of clothes now though more than I ever would have buying fast fashion so there is a conundrum!

I swear you've been reading my mind! It occurred to me the other day I I didn't like the term 'haul' and wondered what other terms I could think of. However to date the synonyms aren't much better! I like some variety in content as well so I've been thoroughly enjoying how you've mixed things up of the last few vlogs. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing new fabrics and I love it even more when they' re not ALL viscose!. I like viscose but there are so many amazing fabric choices. Your approach today was great; ironing, chatting and sharing a few fabrics. I have also been trying to avoid pattern buying due to FOMO. Like @patriciaingram said below, I have defined finances, limited storage and I'm at the other end of my lifespan! Thanks for making me think more deeply about these important and vexed issues.

Great video,Sam and very thought provoking! Haul is an odd word in my dictionary. I quite like watching what you guys buy and don’t feel any pressure. However, I am much older and way over pressure to buy because someone else does. But some people do feel pressure. I’m passionate about small independent companies in all walks of life. Our butchers and bakers have disappeared because of the giants (sorry, personal rant). All the fabric that you ironed was lovely. I live in Kent and never seem to find good fabric shops so look forward to part 2 of your expedition. I’m going to visit the Tenterden one previously mentioned. Happy sewing

Pondering similarly over a long time. I call it fabric collection additions 😂
I'm currently in the whole30fabric challenge, no buying until I've sewn 30 yards (I do metres) from my big collection.
Love seeing what people have found and hearing what they enjoy about a fabric but don't like to see tons at once!
Latest make was from an old but lovely striped duvet. I worry also about where things are made how folk are paid and the safety of the dye cycle and all that......Bought just expensive traceable origin fabric for a bit ...... Thanks for this !

I agree with you - I don’t like the concept of the “haul” as it seems to encourage indiscriminate over buying of fabric that then leads to the need to de-stash. On the other hand, I do appreciate help in finding exactly the right, good quality, reasonably priced fabrics for my projects. I find it helpful to only buy fabric that I have specific plans for although I am not saying those plans don’t change. I think that you are right to be mindful of the environment and the economy as they can’t look after themselves but, while it’s good to act responsibly, I don’t think you should worry about other sewists - they have the capacity to make their own decisions. I love that you are thoughtful about where, how, when, etc. buying fabric makes sense for you. Unfortunately, where I live, second-hand stores, fabric stores, even craft stores that carry quality fabric, are in short supply. I have to buy from online stores which makes me nervous because I can't touch, judge the quality etc. I do like watching fabric 'hauls' because, a) I learn about new potential sources and b) I can see how the fabrics handle and get descriptions from you about quality, washability, sewability, and also the variety of fabrics that are available out there. I think it's everyone's personal responsibility weather or not to buy the same items or not. With your purchases you are also teaching about various types of fibers base clothes come in and what garments they are best suited for. I like that you teach about responsible sewing, but you also teaching us so much more, and fabrics are part of it. Please keep doing that.

So many comments, I'm sure I'll end up repeating one or more, but I'm not able to read them all to be sure. I love that you share your thoughts, and you certainly aren't alone in wondering if you're overthinking something. It's tricky, this idea of influencers and being influenced, because the audience bears some responsibility for how they curate their own media consumption. On your channel, I'd assume the audience is primarily adults, and you often talk about your philosophies and choices when it comes to buying fabric. You don't present your purchases in a way that glamorises buying 'all the things', because all of your content is so thoughtful.
For myself, I enjoy seeing what others have bought or found, particularly if they're also sharing ideas for what they think it could turn into, and what prompted them to choose that thing for themselves. Even if someone has completely different taste than I do, and I'd never buy what they did, it's fun to see what others like. It can spark some ideas for me, but in a way that shows me what's possible, and I don't personally feel pressured to buy more or feel that I need more than what I have. At this point in my sewing, I mostly have inexpensive fabrics for practicing or things I have specific plans for. Temptations do arise at times when I see something I particularly like, but they are fleeting.
If you're concerned about showing all the things that have come to you all at once, it would make sense to reveal them in multiple vlogs, divided into whatever categories you like, and you can talk about the hows and whys of the reasons you chose your fabrics. The important part in all of this is that you feel comfortable with the way you're presenting your content. Your mindfulness threads through all your videos, and I think you're delivering the messages that you want quite well.

I have unfollowed some youtubers that are 'sponsored' and dont follow a popular shop which has frequent 'drops'. So much to think about. Please do share your lovely fabrics, whether brand new, thrifted, or repurposed. I do have quite a large collection of fabric, which I'm in the process of sorting and organizing. Next spring, I plan to donate quite a bit to a charity which supports Grandmothers in Africa raising orphaned family members. I also have quite a collection of patterns. So now, when a vlogger is sharing new patterns, i look at what I have and know I am able to hack an existing pattern to make something similar. I am now retired, so I need to remember I don't need anything fancy. I'm concentrating on pants, jeans, tops and jackets. No reason why i can't look nice while walking the dogs or getting groceries. I also have 2 little great nieces i sew for to help out my nephew, who is a single dad. Recently my 19 year old grandchild asked me to make him a jacket. He saw one in a thrift store, but it was too small, and he loved the unique style of it. He sent me a drawing of the jacket and asked me to find something in my fabric collection that would be similar. I texted photos of what i thought would work and a choice was made. I like the fun style so much that I'm making a similar jacket for myself, I think my fabric choices will be Chanel meets baseball. It's so much fun when you take us shopping. I am a recliner chair traveler watching your vlogs. I have noticed a lot of vloggers are destashing. Possibly too many impulse buy, and I've also noticed quite a bit of the fabric was from subscription boxes. I don't mind watching fabric hauls but i do wonder if the fabric will actually get used. I will admit the last few years I've had advent calendar envy, but then realize many of the items in the calendar i already have or don't need. Sorry for the ramble.

I agree on fabric hauls. I also hate the term 'stash' as it sounds so furtive and to my ear it cheapens the fabrics.
On fast fashion, I think it's OK to buy new as long as you are going to use the fabric to make clothes you expect to wear for a long time. You could acquire huge amounts from thrift shops and end up not using it. My test is how much use I expect to get from it.
In terms of what I like to see, it's thoughtful content that's inspiring. Seeing new stuff all the time doesn't create pressure to buy but can be very tempting... Innovative and fun ideas are much more inspiring.

I do not feel pressured to purchase additional fabric over and above my needs just because others have bought lots of fabrics.. What people call their bulk purchases is immaterial to me, 'drop', 'haul' or something else. I have a different approach to buying fabric from you. I am not a rummager or a bargain hunter and you won't convert me :-) I prefer to buy good quality fabrics for planned makes, with additional fabric occasionally, just because I like it. Oh you have beautifully articulated all of the things that I've been thinking about lately when it comes to sewing and fabric. I also think about those that churn out a ton of garments. Are they making fast fashion? But the thing is I love to watch hauls and I love to see all the garments that everyone makes. It helps me see what's available in the world of sewing. I guess we all have to make our own personal decisions about these things. I choose to make less and take my time to make things that will last for many many years. I also only buy fabric for things that I'm ready to make. I don't want to judge others for what they feel like doing.

Recently I have had the same thought that buying lots of cheaper fabric could be seen as being on a par with buying lots of cheap, fast fashion items. Is having a huge fabric stash similar to having a wardrobe full of clothes you never wear? It was really interesting to hear someone vocalising just what I’ve been pondering! At the moment I’m feeling completely overwhelmed by all the patterns and fabrics out there - I can understand how easy it is to keep buying both (for me it’s patterns rather than fabric that seem to be stacking up). I enjoy vlogs where the vlogger is intentional (as you are) in thinking about what to sew in terms of what they actually need and how to make things that fit their lifestyle or the British weather! I’m on a journey with my wardrobe now I’ve retired - trying to work out what works for me now. I want quality rather than quantity and would rather invest in better quality fabrics and make items that I know I will wear. Really interested to find out more about the deadstock fabric conundrum. Please keep voicing your thoughts!

Sam you’ve completely vocalised my fabric dilemma in your vlog! Like you I’m trying to use up my existing fabrics and create things I’ll actually wear, not buy what I don’t need and be very mindful of waste. Adding to your dilemma is another of mine which is, surely I have more than enough clothes so why am I sewing more of them? But sewing is a huge part of my life and I love it. So how do I square that?! I avoid watching fabric/shopping hauls at all except from those who will actually make use of their fabric and there are a few of those. Not because I don’t enjoy looking at the new fabrics but because I see Sewers sat in front of a massive wall of fabric and yet they’re still buying loads more. I really don’t get that feeling from you. You’re genuinely focused on making what you’ll use and trying go to source carefully. I have no problem with seeing when you’ve had a little spend and enjoying your makes from that. And mentioning small suppliers - absolutely. 👍I think you and your conscience have achieved a good balance. 😀

I’m at the point where I want to reduce the amount of fabric I have, whilst making things that will get worn. I’ve done emotional and FOMO shopping in the past. There are companies I won’t buy from due to quality, approach and customer service. I quite like watching hauls, sometimes I’ll buy something after seeing someone else buy it. I don’t like product promotion, but appreciate its a way for you tubers to make some money or get a free item. I am struggling with the same issues and there are probably a lot of us in the same boat. 🥰. Just please remember people are responsible for their own choices. Think of it as more opening people’s eyes as to what is available so they make better decisions rather than being influenced to over buy. I choose to take fast fashion out of my wardrobe last winter. It’s not that I never buy something off the rack, it just has to be extra special and something I cannot make myself. It’s jeans typically as they are so hard for me to fit. I personally like haul videos. I find them very inspirational. 🤗🤗

Here goes. Just keep in mind, my super talent is holding 2 conflicting convictions at once.😂 I don't watch hauls, I sew to have unique garments so I don't need to see what fabric others buy. More and more I think " if one or two fewer pieces were bought and the money were donated to charity what a difference that could make." I also only shop from companies in US or N America for environmental reasons and to shop more locally.I don't enjoy unboxing as I wouldn't get much pleasure creating garments which are identical to those of hundreds of other sewist. After the first year of the pandemic when I tried to participate in a challenge each month and ended up donating at least half the projects, I only sew challenge garments that are already on my plans list and using fabrics in my stash ( at least 85% of the time). I have a good idea of what styles look good with my proportions and aesthetic, so in the last 4 years of following TH-camrs and insta influencers I have not sewn any garments with ruffles, slip dresses (too boney in shoulders and shoulder blades), elastic waisted pants or large scale prints. But I do enjoy seeing finished garments and input on the construction process. And Beyond the Pink Door is one of my favorites to watch. So, go figure. 😊Making these decisions is an ongoing process, so just keep up the good work. ❤

Interesting to hear you "pressing matters" chat, love that suggestion. Seeing others hauls doesn't make me spend, I like seeing what others have bought but rarely want to copy. I do find visiting fabric shops and websites in general does though so that's what I avoid when my stash is ample. I think the buying/making just to have vlog content that some vloggers seem to feel pressure to do is a worse issue. I don't feel you do that, your makes seem considered and varied to include upcycles etc which is why I enjoy watching you.
I'm happy to see whatever content you want to share, including any mending you undertake which seems to be a lesser shown aspect of sewing, yes it's not exciting but surely it's one of the most sustainable things you can do and that we can encourage each other to do. Just a thought but overall, you do you :)

Morning Sam. I love to see what other people are buying and what their plans are for the fabrics. I don’t feel pressured into buying. I also buy “fabric “ in the form of sheets and duvet covers as well as the odd length of actual dress making fabric from charity shops. I have a varied stash and don’t generally buy for the sake of buying any more, but only buy if it’s a fabric I need for a project, not just what I want. Don’t over think it, you’ll just cause yourself more stress. If people don’t want to see those kinds of vlogs they can always switch over to something else 🤷🏼‍♀️🙂

Apologies in advance if this turns into a long comment - I wish we could discuss this over a cuppa but I get everything you're saying and I agree with most of it. I returned to sewing at the beginning of this year after a gap of about 20 years and was amazed at the changes in the sewing world. I'm still trying to absorb them all and I started out like a kid in a sweet shop. But watching the vlogs on TH-cam has started to change my attitude. So I think it's great to try and sew ethically, with a view to promoting small business, is great but as others have said, don't beat yourself up if you don't achieve "perfection". I think if we all do what we can to consider our choices and our purchasing then we are making a difference. As you said "progress not perfection". And I must confess I love a fabric haul but I've never felt pressured to buy more.
    Sorry for rambling...❤

I like to see what ones have bought but I don’t think I have to have that…..but I do fully understand what you have mentioned..it can be a temptation that people cannot afford….great vlog as always.❤😊

At least you sew up what you buy, that is something many of us don't do. I love to watch hauls because I love fabric. I don't live in the UK so you are not making me feel like I am missing out. Also, I like the ironing board talks.

Thank you Sam, I enjoyed this style of chat over the ironing board. I am definitely guilty of buying too many fabrics, sharing fabric hauls, etc. I feel very seen 😂 It is certainly food for thought & has made me think I need to get better & smarter with my sewing/buying so thank you 🙏

Me too I love fabric and patterns. As I say progress not perfection and everyone is on their own journey. I don't know what the answer is. Interesting to hear peoples thoughts

I love watching your videos due to your joy, clarity and thoughtfulness. This chat was my favourite yet. Yes, I think about all these issues regularly when sewing and replacing garments. I currently have a very large stash of fabric from supporting small business and from thrift shopping for doona covers etc. I am working at using my stash and at enjoying what I have. I really love the endorphin rush of ordering or buying something new. I find that if I wait a day or two, I lose the urge for new and am reminded of all the potential in my cupboard. I don't think there is one solution to the issues you have brought to our notice during this video. It's a balance and a work in progress to figure out how to live mindfully and with integrity. Thanks a bunch for modelling the process.

Hi Sam, thank you for another great vlog! You brought up some very good points in regard to our fabric hauls and shopping of fabrics. I enjoy seeing what fabrics & patterns others have purchased, it gets my creatively flowing. I am shopping from my stash instead of buying more fabrics and using patterns I already have. Majority of my fabric is from small businesses, destash from others or given to me. I still print out my pdf patterns and put them together, mainly because I can’t justify paying from $40 to $60. a pattern to have them printed at the copy shop.

I’d like to see a ‘haul’ vlog. I do agree with so much of what you’ve said but i know you’ll preface it with some of the caveats you’ve raised about in this.
You could call it your latest fabric collection? Stash additions? Stash addition edition? 😂 I love watching fabric hauls for inspiration of what to make with different fabrics as I’m still new to matching fabrics to patterns.
    Loved the tiger fabric.
I’ve bought the Crafty Pie rainbow checks in both sizes. Not sure what I’ll make yet but I’d love to see which ones you bought and what you’ll make.
Thinking of you with everything that’s going on too.

Hi Sam, I really enjoyed this vlog and hearing your thoughts. I’ve also been trying to reconcile shopping mindfully and sustainably with supporting small/ local businesses, it can be a difficult balance. You could continue the ironing series to share fabrics, where you bought them from and what your initial thoughts for making them are (perhaps ‘On the ironing board today’ instead of ‘haul’?). Thanks for taking the time to plan and film different styles of vlog, I really enjoy watching them 😊

Hi Sam. I think you can tie yourself in knots very quickly with this deep thinking. I likecwatching haul videos as for me, they are easy, relaxing watching and I don't feel the need to go out amd buy them. I prefer sewing content videos as I learn more but I need to be more attentive when watching these vlogs. I'd love to learn more about adapting patterns.
I really like your ironing board chats, it's very different and new. As you iron your fabric you could just mention where you purchased it from and what you might make from it (amongst you other thoughts 😉) then it's the same content as a haul video but not exactly a haul video.

Good idea about mentioning where they are from. Also great thought about the times of episodes thank you xxx

Interesting to hear your thoughts on this. I am with you, I do love a ‘haul’ video because I can see what is available in different places and am interested to see what others like but although they do inspire me I am not influenced to the extent that I have to purchase after each haul. I am more likely to make wish lists for when the time is right and if the fabric is no longer available then it wasn’t meant to be. I am conscious also of where fabric is coming from and some of the dyes used particularly after a recent visit to India so try and use companies I know ethically source etc (however I also buy things cos I like them and have no idea of the provenance)
Please share your fabric purchases as it does inspire and is different from a fast fashion haul in that each piece is made mindfully and with love not in a sweatshop for 20p an hour! Any form Of creativity is not fast by the sheer time that goes into thinking about it. Gosh that’s a ramble xx

Enjoyed your video as always. Please tell me the brand of Iron you're using. It looks like it produces a great bit of "steam", which I really need.
    Thanks

I think very similar thoughts Sam! I’ve recently started to think about constant new fabric collections as fast fashion. That striped tiger fabric is all over eBay and Etsy - as fabric but also clothing and bags. I first saw it in a shop as a bag in June. Will watch with interest to see what you make with it

Thank you. It is very tricky. I'm doing a lot of thinking about what I want to make with it.

interesting topic, thanks for sharing. firstly i think that every creator has to decide for themselves what is right for them, so no judgement on anyone else. but for me when i was a newer channel, hauls were almost the only thing that got a lot of views so i felt some internal pressure to keep posting them. eventually i didn't like the way that they made me feel about myself (i felt like i had to keep buying to have new stuff to share) so i stopped. and my audience adjusted to the new types of content i was putting out and it didn't hurt my channel growth at all over the long run. as a viewer i almost never watch hauls either. if you do post a video sharing your new fabric i would reframe it more as a plans video b/c i think that it has more value for the viewer--not just "look at my new stuff" but instead "here's some ideas for things you could make."
