Phil is extremely intelligent. He knows the majority of people raise with hands like 10-3 and 9-2. Phil was absolutely certain ( just as many pros and amateurs alike would be certain) that Antonio was stone cold bluffing. 😂😂
I think Antonio was probably railing him before this hand. And he thought Antonio was bluffing or something. Or thought he could make it look like he had a straight etc. But that is a long shot and really... Doesn't work often against the best players
like the commentator said at 0:35, at 1:14 (flat out said so then), and at 3:58 .... it looked like Antonio was attempting to get even for a previous hand between the two. and Phil still let Antonio do precisely THAT by calling (at least) TWO streets that were easy folds.
I started reading one of his books at one point and he said no one but pros should play anything but Jacks or better so he probably thinks he played this correctly.
earlier in the game Antonio complained that other players didn't respect his raises. as if nobody believes him when he's got the nuts. Phil apparently is one of those players.
With all the possibilities on that board, 'just top set' seems a reasonable enough thing to say. Better than for example, ' calling with only pocket 9s you crazy mtf, what were you thinking?!' Now that would have been rude.
Imagine if Phil had the T 5 he had the last hand, and bet like Antonio all through the hand, then got called and beat with pocket 9s. He'd rant about what an idiot the guy was for calling, and tell him "just keep playing like that and you'll give me all your money", and for once, he'd be right.
I wish I could know what helmuth was thinking this hand, there was no point he should of thought he was ahead unless he thought Antonio had AK but the end killed it
Antonio's raise pre-flop made it pretty obvious he at least had one ace. Not sure what Phil was thinking here calling with 3 over cards to his 9's out there.
After that Ace showed (instead of a nine or ten) Hellmuth should have abandoned his hand. Esfandiari had three ways to pair higher than him, and Hellmuth though he could bluff his way through this? We probably saw the Sunk Cost Fallacy in action here.
Set of aces beats pretty much every other hand on the board, so using the word 'just' makes it sound a bit sarcastic. That being said, 99% of people would not take offence and would either find it funny or recognise that it was just a clumsy choice of words, only someone as sensitive as Hellmuth would get offended by that comment
Phil was blinded by the idea that he was hero calling and busting a seven-deuce. Steam raise 2-7 pre-flop and three barreling with bottom pair. It seems phil forgot bottom pair is barely a bluff catcher and Antonio would have realized that most bluffs Phil could have would have beat that.
Somebody is finally finding out it's a lot easier to win WSOP poker bracelets 35 years ago than it is nowadays. He's not in the same league as Negraneu or Ivey.
„Great Play Antonio“ Even when doing the most stupid mistake Phil tries to make it appear like his opponent would have pulled off some incredible move to be able to beat him.
Phil just seems to want to bully pre flop and assumes anyone who calls him is bluffing. Now granted if you are a pushover pre flop you can lose on any raises where you don’t have it, but it seems like Phil, knowing Phil, is better to not be the aggressor pre flop.
"just top set" when phil called, he was rightly worried he had a straight. Saying, "just top set" was just his way of saying, "I dont have the straight". Didn't seem like it was a poke, to me.
OK, I don't know why I watched this since I don't really play poker. But the flop had two cards over Phil's 9's. Which meant that even if the other guy didn't have any pairs (which he did), he could have had a J or Q to match the board and still beat Phil. I don't get Phil's strategy.
