Yours are significantly better than the Mastin and VSCO stuff. More recently I've been using Alex Ruskman's stuff and tend to only use his and your stuff on my digitals 👍

Very well done! This presenter includes context as well as editing examples. He also knows how to take his time and not just click around without explaining things, as a lot of Photoshop / Lightroom gurus are lousy presenters. He understands that he's talking about photography and editing in the context of what the artist wants to achieve. I will have to recommend to others and see more of his work.

I think these are some of the best presets you can get - Only other I have tried which I found worth mentioning are Alex Ruskman's which are also as close to the real thing as you can get.

It is important to remember that negative film stock was only a starting point for print making. Yes, drug stores and mass printing services relied on preset formulas for making prints. But skilled color printers had more tools at their disposal to make prints with a pure black and a paper white. Improved color balance and other tweaks - such as burning and dodging - were also available in the darkroom. Negative film was just a starting point.
As one who learned photography in the darkroom, I am very happy with the amount of micro controls available with digital photography and post processing software. These tools allow you to get the perfect print out of the initial exposure in way that was nearly impossible in the darkroom. I’m not going back to film.
That said, I view these presets and profiles as shortcuts to finding the look you want for the final image. They allow you to quickly explore a range of options without tweaking individual sliders. With both profiles and presets, it’s also theoretically possible to stack different film looks to get hybrid effects quickly. Have fun. Don’t be satisfied with nostalgic mediocre drug store prints.

Thank you for explaining the difference between presets and profiles! I have been wondering why all the “presets” I’ve purchased didn’t show me the actual changes they were making to the photo - turns out they are profiles not presets.
Also fascinating to learn a bit of background about these different types of film. Awesome video.

  • @L4busaures

Hey Todd. You’re wrong on a few things about film.
    1. Film does produce pure blacks. Most of the “film looks” with lifted blacks are emulating lab scans. If you’ve ever looked at a film negative you would see there are sections that are nearly transparent. After inversion, those transparent areas would become deep blacks. Color negative and slide film both highly lack latitude in the shadow, which often crush the backs as opposed to lifting them.
    2. Some film presets are subtractive, yes, but if you shoot a highly saturated film like Velvia or Ektar you would know those film stocks ADD punch. You would definitely need to boost the saturation on those images.

Just bought the pro V5 absolutely hands down the best emulation I have seen or used! highly recommend for anyone trying to replicate film on digital, with the price of film only going one way, you really can achieve, and almost identical look. I have been doing some comparisons and with tweeks I can hardly tell. Yes, they are quite expensive, but for what you get it is more than worth it! I've been trying to build my own film profile (I generally shoot Kodak porta 400 and Fuji superia and these really are and will continue to improve my work flow. The level of detail is outstanding

RNI seems held back by the fact they don't have a great grain system the way dehancer does (where you can control grain in the highlights, mids and shadows to get a more film like application of grain versus an overlay of grain applied the same in all areas).

My favorite overview of the product Todd, thanks for sharing! I have a question about it, wonder if you experience the same. I installed demo 5. When using profiles from presets list at the left in LR Classic, I obtain a different result than using the profile in the right menu of profiles. I can't find differences in any other setting. Also, when using the left panel, when hovering it gives a preview, but when clicking on it and moving the mouse over the photo, the image changes look. For example with Portra 400 it becomes more saturated and contrasted. Have you experienced this different behavior as well?

Any pointers for going the other way around? I've digitized a couple thousand of my mother's from the 70s and onwards, might not do all of that wall of magazines in the basement but wanna learn how to try and bring out some of the faded colors and washed out highlights. Digitized with a macro lens and a Godox M150 light, matching the 5600K white balance, but when trying to save blown out skies they turn brown - was the smog that bad in the 70s/80s? And shadows go blue. Maybe that's the charm. Asked ChatGPT and got an answer that kind of sounded right but I think it also wanted to make new pictures look like old

Couple of points - which do you prefer - profiles or presets? BTW there are apps that introduce an opacity slider to allow the same treatment to presets as demonstrated by yourself on profiles. Coming from the FUJI ecosystem the whole point of course is getting it right in camera , ie, film simulations with JPEGs 🤟Your thoughts on this ?

  • @peoplez129
    @peoplez129 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There's a huge problem with the way lightroom handles profiles. When you lower the percentage slider of a custom profile to 0, regardless of your global settings, it gradually defaults back to adobe standard profile. Even if your global default profile is a camera matching profile. Which means ALL of the presets lightroom applies, are actually treated more like filters applied on top of the adobe standard profile, regardless of what your starting point is set to. I tested this by setting camera raw defaults to adobe color, and then applied a preset and set the slider to zero. It matched adobe standard perfectly, which means it's even ignoring the defaults you set, in favor of adobes standard profile.
This to me is a serious problem when it comes to actually getting real looks from profiles, because it's instead more like if you are editing JPEG's rather than RAW. The system of how they chose to do things is pretty terrible. The same thing applies to ANY custom profile even. ALL profiles are just edits on top of Adobe's standard profile, even the camera matching profiles. This taints everything when it comes to using profiles. This also explain why camera matching profiles never actually match a camera manufacturers color profiles...it's because it's all built upon and tainted by adobe standard profile. It's actually pretty crazy that Adobe would do this. Most people will never delve into it enough to realize that, but it basically compromises ALL results using lightroom.
Sure, you can get some nice looks using lightroom, but if everything is just an edit of adobe standard profile, then you are limited by the starting point of that profile! That also means all of your curve adjustments will only ever be within the confines of the adobe standard profile, which ultimately means you're not getting the full dynamic range and data out of your RAW files, because everything is an edit on top of an edit, there is no actual clean starting point, the starting point for all adjustments (even the ones you can't see), is adobe standard profile, not the profiles for any presets you're applying. They're all just a filter placed on top of adobe camera standard.
