Chicago original Broadway production with Liza Minnelli

- On August 8, 1975, Liza Minnelli stepped in as Roxie Hart while Gwen Verdon was recovering from, what I think was, a throat problem. Liza had only 6 days to learn the role and was in for a month. Her entire run was sold out as soon as the news spread out and she essentially saved the play from closing.
I managed to find all the musical numbers from the play WITH Liza, some are already on TH-cam, but I never found the entire numbers, so I decided to upload them myself. This was recorded by an audience member, so the quality isn’t the best but it’s not awful! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.
Members of the cast included: Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Orbach, Barney Martin, Mary McCarty, Michael O'Haughey.

I saw it. Astonishing experience--and not just for Liza, though according to a friend who was a dancer in the production, it gave the production a massive boost of electricity. But, of course, Chorus Line down the block unfairly gobbled up all the awards.

Hamilton was great and Chicago is still around. Just like the movies, so many new scripts are waiting to be born, Hollywood and Broadway keeps on rebooting the same old stuff. What happened to originality?😥

The reason for Gwen’s being out of the show was, ironically, due to an injury she had sustained while performing the role of Roxie in this very production of Chicago. During the finale Nowadays- Hot Honey Rag- Loopin de-Loop-All That Jazz reprise - both she and Chita wore these feathered boas and in the course of dancing and flinging them around one of these feathers came loose and Gwen swallowed it! It caused injury to her vocal chords and made her already raspy voice more so, and it would plague her for the rest of her life.
I would have liked to have seen her as Velma at that age I bet she would have killed that too
