Whilst I was born in E17, i grew up traveling to and from school on the central line so the tube has always had a place in my heart. 22 years of service to Londoners - may God bless you sir and enjoy your well deserved retirement!

I really really enjoyed watching your videos and I want to wish you the absolute best of luck! And please make some more videos gardening or whatever you do in retirement! Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your last day on the Jubilee Line with us. I wish you a long and happy retirement. I used to work on the railway for the s&t dept and took my retirement in July this year. Everyone before me has already said it - 😂It’s a pity your little series is finished, it was a treasure to watch! It was surreal no doubt, your last day. Hope the turnout for your retirement dinner went well. Cheers, and good luck to you👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the question, it was because I thought the west bound platform was dangerously crowded at busy times. I do like to reply to comments because you and everybody else that has commented have taken the time not only to watch but to comment or ask a question. It would be rude of me not to reply. Thanks again 👍👍
Very well done! I wish you lots of happy resting days! I also wish that you would have started to make videos before this special day, because they’re a joy to watch
This is very sad, us viewers thank you a lot for your service for 22 years. Therefore your retirement, it is the end. Hope you have a great life as a retired jubilee line driver.
I have just discovered these videos and enjoyed watching them greatly. It's a bitter-sweet day when you retire. I know I did nearly 20 years ago when I took early retirement. I used to travel on the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf back on to 2000s when the line was still new. The job of a train driver looks easy but I know from others that it requires skill and dedication and intelligence . Qualities which are shown in this series of last day working. I was lucky enough to see round the Acton works by an LT apprentice when I was at university. That apprentice went on to become a head of section on the Underground.
Thank you for watching and your comment, I’m pleased you enjoyed them. I’m sure at some time back in the early 2000’s I must have had the privilege of driving you to Canary Wharf, and back then I would have driven !! Yes it was a bittersweet day, I hadn’t really planned for it but as it happens was a good decision. I hope you’re enjoying your retirement more than you expected, I am. Thanks again 👍👍
I've been watching since the start of the series, and I just wanted to say thank you for your service on the underground and kept London moving! Enjoy your Retirement! 😊👍
Thank you for making these videos, I found them really entertaining and interesting to view. I watched each video as and when you released them a couple of months ago and have re-watched them all again today. Thank you for your 22 years of service and enjoy your well deserved retirement. Thanks again for letting us experience your last day with you. Take care and all the best for the future.
Thank you for sharing this day with us and giving us an insight into your work. I think we're all wannabe train drivers at heart. I found it unexpectedly emotional to watch too and thinking about your next chapter in life. Hope life is treating you well. Happy Retirement sir.
Thank you for your kind words and best wishes. Life is treating me well and although the retirement chapter has been busier than I expected, I’ve been happy so far, thanks 👍👍
You could always write about your experiences and get them published. I have not go half the knowledge you have but have managed to publish a London travelogue on Amazon. I have been riding the system since 8 years of age and am now 73. Good luck and thank you for a good set of videos for your retirement express.
Thank you for watching, I’m pleased you enjoyed them. I’m not so sure about writing a book but I do have some more videos coming soon . They have taken me so long to write scripts for them
I was a bit sad that again you edited out the voyage from Canary Wharf to Bond Street. It's kind of interesting that, as you go from Stratford you kind of go back in time, going from the Jubiilee Line Extension to the original Jubilee Line to repurposed Bakerloo Line tunnels to repurposed Metropolitan Railway tracks. So I watched all of your End of the Line videos hoping to spot all the differences in how things were built. Anyhoo, thanks for making these and for all the trains you have driven over the years. I've been on enough Jubilee Line trains that I've probably been on one of your trains.
Thank you very much for watching and your kind comments. It wasn’t intentional not to show more of the westbound extension, more to do with me being a novice videographer and an overheating action camera, sorry. But I’m pleased you enjoyed 👍👍
Loved this series , I love the London Underground, but only just realised after seeing you drive one that most tube trains are semi automated after all these years , looking toward to your future travel vlogs
16:35…….love the way you sit there as the train is moving like Captain Kirk at the helm of the enterprise! Hope you are enjoying life at a leisurely pace now and not at warp speed👍
Thank you, I like that description 😀. I am enjoying life and the pace? I don’t know about warp speed but time definitely goes too fast, I’d swap that enterprise for the doctors Tardis anytime 🤣🤣👍👍
I've really enjoyed your videos good luck in your retirement, you were saying where have all the years gone, yes time does go fast, I've been retired for five years now and time goes even faster. 😢
@@Matty12333 I know what you mean. I think it’s a bit like , when I was 5 years old a year was 20% of what I knew, when I was 20 it had fallen to 5% and when I passed 50 it became less than 2% ! So relative to what I know and have experienced , time just accelerates!! 👍
Thanks for the final instalment Paul and apologies for the delay in posting a reply here. Been a bit busy on the run up to Christmas - I bet it’s great not having to worry about the shifts and everything this year! What now? Thanks again Captain, yes Christmas, very busy time, but as you say no shifts to worry about! No volunteering for a New Year’s Eve shift !! Hopefully all your L😃ts travel will be free from now on and if you need it a senior railpass is great too. Thanks for sharing your last day. mine was low key until i got to school pm to take my 70 kids home and had pressies, cards and a hug from the head master too.
@@carolinecleaveley-q1r thank you , yes preserving health and wealth were my first two priorities and that senior railcard , I’ve had it for a few years now! My only free travel is when I’m in London 👍👍
Thank you, I always made what I considered meaningful and appropriate announcements, if platforms were clear there was no need if they were busy then I would 👍👍
Keep busy whatever you do, retirement seems to bring in health problems & I know a lot who refuse to retire because of that. Whatever you do, do though - Enjoy it! :)
I’ve watched from 1 to 5 parts, very interesting, years ago I used to travel this line, you very possibly was the driver at times? I hope your retirement is all you hoped for and wish you all the best for the future.
Thank you very much much for watching and for your comment and best wishes. Retirement is turning out to be better than I thought it would, it’s so nice to hear from someone who probably traveled with you me 👍👍
Thanks, I’m enjoying the freedom of not having to plan much, just waking up checking the weather and planning from there is very nice. I have a lot of travelling that I want to do 👍👍
Wonderful! I wondered 1) whether you were the driver who ended up on the Charing Cross Jubilee platforms a few months ago, and 2) how that could have happened?
Oops, often. The only way it can happen is for a train to be routed into Charring Cross, and if it wasn’t meant to be the operator may have accepted it but not knowing it would be wrong of me to hazard a guess, sorry 👍👍
Well this is a sad end to a great and most enjoyable 5 episode event that shows what goes on 'behind the door'. Fantastic stuff and thanks for letting us in to see what happens. Enjoy your retirement, be lucky mate.
in the course of your career you've seen the tracks next to the jubilee line between stratford and canning town change from NLL to DLR, the end of wayside signals on the Jubilee, the addition of a seventh carriage, both A and S stock on the Met, and the 1996 stock refurbishment. also there was the period when it was part of the "Tube Lines" enterprise. You've made so many Londoners' lives more convenient and the TFL will miss having a great driver.
Well done for your service you must have taken me to my grandmothers house which from west to willsden green thank for your service we salute you 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
Well, I’m not sure what it must have been like for you John, but it was quite emotional for me. And thank you Mike for the third person filming at Stratford 🙂 But who was it at Wembley Park, or was that not you heading into the sidings? It must feel very strange as there is no last day slow-up … you are on the full job until the very last opening of the doors, then you step out of the train and that’s it. Over in an instant. So thank you for the insight into your world. One question: At Stratford, did you let yourself in? Were you waiting for the incoming train driver to get out to do a visual handover as they got out, and you took over control of the train? Whatever, I wish you well in your retirement, so now that you’ve finished 6 months, what’s the next idea? 😊
Thanks for watching and I will be thanking Mike again. At Wembley Park, that wasn’t my train coming out of the sidings, I went on the roof to film one about 20 mins later!! At Stratford yes I let myself into the cab and there is no need for that visual check as driver have to press a button that illuminates a sign RCC rear cab clear 👍👍
Greetings from New Zealand! I’ve just binge-watched all five of your videos and went through most of the comments and replies here. Seeing how you respond to everyone inspired me to leave a comment too! Thank you for sharing your retirement day duty with us. As an engineer who occasionally works on railways, I’m curious if you have any memorable highlights (technological/engineering) insights from your 22 years of train driving that you’d like to share?
Hello , New Zealand. Thanks for watching my videos and yes I do try to answer all comments. I think that if someone takes their time to watch and the comment , it deserves an answer. An insight from me after almost 22 years of driving tube trains? It’s a bit like formula 1 motor racing, all most people see is the driver, but there’s a massive team behind the running of the train, controllers and managers , maintainance and service support engineers emergency response units it’s a lot more people intensive operation than most people would think, to run a train. And then there’s the constant evolution of the railway and trains running on it. In my time the obvious changes were 6 to 7 carriages and manual to auto operation but it would be impossible for me to remember let alone list the amount of continual updates to just the software of the signaling. Yes that’s my bit of insight, a railway is continually evolving 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea This clarifies why someone who isn't familiar with the intricate details and effort involved in railway operations might feel confused and frustrated when seemingly straightforward projects, such as launching a new train or stock, take a considerable amount of time. Thanks. Looking forward to your future videos.
Hi mate I was just wondering have you tried model railways it’s a great thing to keep entertained with just an idea Good luck you deserve this retirement
Thanks for watching and your suggestion, I haven’t tried model railways since I was a child however I think if my grandson wants a train set when he gets a bit older I’d like to be more interesting than a train going around a plain track on the carpet and make him a proper model railway, I’d find it interesting for sure 👍
Enjoyed your videos. I hope you have a great retirement. Can you answer a question? What was the arch structure overhead at 4:32 in the video? I guess you can tell I have not been a passenger.
Thank you , yes Canning Town. It’s an extremely busy station and quite often you have to leave a lot and I mean enough people to fill another train on that curved platform and getting them to stand back so I’m able to see the platform edge to safely close the doors and leave can be a nightmare. Basically I thought it was the most dangerous station on the line.
Congratulations on your retirement. A quick question: What determines whether you make a manual "mind the doors" announcement, and when you just use the alarm? Thanks!
Thanks for your nice comment and question. For me it would depend on how busy a platform was and how heavily the train was loaded, sometimes station staff would make announcements and I never talked over them. We also had a list of prerecorded ones that I rarely used , I preferred to make my own. 👍👍
When driving a tube train, do you have set times arrive and depart from each station or do you just have a departure time from the start point and an arrival time at the end point?
Not sure if you are still reading these comments but I hope the last few months have been good for you. Im sure it is bittersweet leaving a job you enjoyed and now not going to work but I hope you have found something fulfilling to do in your time off.
@@itsjustanidea I think the problem with PM mode is as you will know, it's quite restrictive and easy to loose time as it's a lot more difficult to drive like ATO
Thanks for asking, it might be a short, who? What? and why? Explaining about the channel or it could be what I’m trying to edit now, a trip I recently made Wales to Greece by train and boat 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea I hope you have a good time at Wales, You left Wales to London and London to Wales, I hope you enjoy your retirement as a London tube driver mate 👍
Thank you for asking that question. London Underground train operators are contracted and paid for 35 hours per week however they are rostered 36 hours a week averaged over the length of the roster. There is a 30 min unpaid meal break on every duty. So on average a shift would be around 7 1/2 hours.👍👍
@@allenmondesir it’s all based on a 5 day working week. Within this , there is the possibility to work shorter weeks 2, 3 or 4 days and on the Jubilee line and a few others there is the night tube at weekends. 👍👍
I'm sure now that you've got into the TH-cam videos game you'll be finding many more things to make videos about. Retirement is really just a word. Now you can do things at your own pace and video some of them along the way.
Thank you. So far retirement has gone extremely well, not exactly how I expected it to go, but then I didn’t really plan it. I kind of stumbled into it 🤣. There have been some challenges for sure and the best way of describing it is , for me retirement has been like going back to school. I am planning some videos about my retirement and yes it’s definitely going well and I’m enjoying it 👍👍👍
I think it would depend upon your knowledge of the underground system. I was waiting for a supervisor to add my railcard to my Oyster one day and was approach by several passengers for directions. I pointed each passenger to the right branch and the correct platform. The supervisor said I should get a job with LUL! I have been riding the system for 65 years, so it would be very surprising if I did not know something about it. What Paul says is right, keep applying, get to know the system and stations.
Thanks yes, I think it was one of those little tricks the mind plays, I had just mentioned 5 more stops, then the 22 years and my brain mixed them up 🤣🤣👍
@@Saevr-u6e No , I moved to Wales, that’s why I was staying in the Premier Inn and had been working a job share ( part time) for a while. Thanks for asking 👍👍
Thanks for your question, yes I did retire after almost 22 years of driving but no I hadn’t become bored with it. Sometimes it could be a bit monotonous but I found that easy to deal with. If that job was boring I don’t think I would have lasted 22 days let alone 22years 👍👍

Thanks for watching, and for your good wishes. I hope you enjoyed the series and I’m enjoying retirement. Thank you 👍👍
From one T/O to another, enjoy your retirement, stay blessed.
Absolutely! Take care 👍👍
Thank you so much for watching them, twice! I’m really pleased you enjoyed them and I appreciate your kind comments. 👍👍
I really enjoyed your mini series. I hope you are enjoying your well earned feet up time.
Cheers
Thank you, I’m pleased you enjoyed and yes I’m enjoying life 👍👍
Thank you for sharing this day with us and giving us an insight into your work.
They have taken me so long to write scripts for them
That writing a book would take me years 👍👍
I was a bit sad that again you edited out the voyage from Canary Wharf to Bond Street.
I just wanted to say that I enjoyed watching the last few videos wishing you a happy retirement .
Thank you for watching and for your best wishes, I’m glad you enjoyed 👍👍
it's really a very interesting series, good video 👍
Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed 👍👍
Loved this series , I love the London Underground, but only just realised after seeing you drive one that most tube trains are semi automated after all these years , looking toward to your future travel vlogs
Thank you I’m glad you liked the series 👍👍
16:35…….love the way you sit there as the train is moving like Captain Kirk at the helm of the enterprise! Hope you are enjoying life at a leisurely pace now and not at warp speed👍
Thank you, I like that description 😀.
I am enjoying life and the pace? I don’t know about warp speed but time definitely goes too fast, I’d swap that enterprise for the doctors Tardis anytime 🤣🤣👍👍
Happy retirement, enjoy it you've earned it
Thanks for those kind wishes and I will do my best👍
I've really enjoyed your videos good luck in your retirement, you were saying where have all the years gone, yes time does go fast, I've been retired for five years now and time goes even faster. 😢
Thanks 👍 I’m glad you enjoyed and yes time seems to be accelerating at an alarming pace!!👍
Time feels so fast these days for sure, I struggle to understand why?
@@Matty12333 I know what you mean.
I think it’s a bit like , when I was 5 years old a year was 20% of what I knew, when I was 20 it had fallen to 5% and when I passed 50 it became less than 2% ! So relative to what I know and have experienced , time just accelerates!! 👍
Thanks for the final instalment Paul and apologies for the delay in posting a reply here. Been a bit busy on the run up to Christmas - I bet it’s great not having to worry about the shifts and everything this year!
What now? Yes indeed, I’m sure you’ll have lots of travels and stuff you’d like to share so I guess watch this space! Wishing you the best for Christmas and the New Year, have a merry one!
All the best Paul 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks again Captain, yes Christmas, very busy time, but as you say no shifts to worry about! No volunteering for a New Year’s Eve shift !!
Yes my adventures have started and am editing a trip I recently took . Replaced one type of shift for another I guess.
Have a great Christmas and New year. Hope to see you on this you tube soon 👍👍👍
@@itsjustanidea No need to thank me Paul, indeed thank you for posting your videos. You portray a really nice way of doing the job while being professional and knowledgeable, win-win for everything! Best to you and yours over the festive time, Alex : )

congrats on your retirement I retired after 18 years off the buses last year and enjoying my retirement. Hope you do too.
Thank you, it’s nice to hear from someone who has already retired and enjoying it and long may it last 👍👍
Glad you ok anyway. if you got lots of family or hobby interests life can be great. Just watch the finances and dont go too mad.
Congratulations on your retirement! I too retired 2 years ago after 35 years as signal inspector for the MTA commuter line in NY state..
Thank you for your comment and best wishes.
35 years that’s a lot longer than mine I hope you enjoyed your career 👍👍
Good luck , now to fill in the time. Happy days. 🥳
Thanks, I like that , happy days! 👍👍
Nice video series!
Thanks, I’ve enjoyed sharing them 👍👍
Great series thanks. Why do you make manual 'please stand clear of the closing doors' announcements at some stations but not at others?
Thank you, I always made what I considered meaningful and appropriate announcements, if platforms were clear there was no need if they were busy then I would 👍👍
The part at the end that says "now what" were the exact words that i was thinking.
Thank you, 👍👍
Keep busy whatever you do, retirement seems to bring in health problems & I know a lot who refuse to retire because of that.
Whatever you do, do though - Enjoy it! :)
Thank you and I know what you mean my number 1 priority when I retired was to improve and preserve my health it’s a must if you want to enjoy life 👍👍
I’ve watched from 1 to 5 parts, very interesting, years ago I used to travel this line, you very possibly was the driver at times?
I hope your retirement is all you hoped for and wish you all the best for the future.
Thank you very much much for watching and for your comment and best wishes. Retirement is turning out to be better than I thought it would, it’s so nice to hear from someone who probably traveled with you me 👍👍
What a finale. Brave face, I think. Any plans on what you will do now?
Thanks, I’m enjoying the freedom of not having to plan much, just waking up checking the weather and planning from there is very nice. I have a lot of travelling that I want to do 👍👍
Wonderful! I wondered 1) whether you were the driver who ended up on the Charing Cross Jubilee platforms a few months ago, and 2) how that could have happened?
Thank you for your nice comment and question. No it wasn’t me and to be honest I’m not aware of this incident. However I have been to Carring Cross
Oops, often. The only way it can happen is for a train to be routed into Charring Cross, and if it wasn’t meant to be the operator may have accepted it but not knowing it would be wrong of me to hazard a guess, sorry 👍👍
Thank you Paul on your last day
Thanks for watching 👍👍
Well this is a sad end to a great and most enjoyable 5 episode event that shows what goes on 'behind the door'.
Fantastic stuff and thanks for letting us in to see what happens.
Enjoy your retirement, be lucky mate.
Thank you very much, I’m definitely enjoying retirement 👍👍
in the course of your career you've seen the tracks next to the jubilee line between stratford and canning town change from NLL to DLR, the end of wayside signals on the Jubilee, the addition of a seventh carriage, both A and S stock on the Met, and the 1996 stock refurbishment. also there was the period when it was part of the "Tube Lines" enterprise. You've made so many Londoners' lives more convenient and the TFL will miss having a great driver.
Thanks for that kind assessment and comment 👍👍
Well done for your service you must have taken me to my grandmothers house which from west to willsden green thank for your service we salute you 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
Thank you for your kind comment 👍
And thanks for your best wishes next idea was a trip to Greece 👍👍
That is a very good idea indeed @@itsjustanidea. Beautiful country

Hi mate I was just wondering have you tried model railways it’s a great thing to keep entertained with just an idea
Good luck you deserve this retirement
Thanks for watching and your suggestion, I haven’t tried model railways since I was a child however I think if my grandson wants a train set when he gets a bit older I’d like to be more interesting than a train going around a plain track on the carpet and make him a proper model railway, I’d find it interesting for sure 👍
Enjoyed your videos. I hope you have a great retirement. Can you answer a question? What was the arch structure overhead at 4:32 in the video? I guess you can tell I have not been a passenger.
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed, that is a new footbridge into a very large development at West Ham station 👍👍
I would have driven in PM mode for the final time 😂
I was pleased not to! I know a few who would have , but ATO for me!! 👍👍
hey, just an idea, do you have any ideas of working in the epping-ongar railway? ive heard they've got manual control tube trains there
Thanks for your question. No I have no idea about the Epping - Onger railway, sorry 👍👍
May I ask why Canning Town is your least favorite station on the line?
Thanks for watching and for your question.
Yes we do have a timetable with a departure time from each station 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea thank you for your answer and, most important, thank you for your service on the tube. Have a good day

Did it never get boring just being stuck on one line everyday going up and down et
Thanks for that question and the truth is not as often as you might think. 👍
Not sure if you are still reading these comments but I hope the last few months have been good for you. Im sure it is bittersweet leaving a job you enjoyed and now not going to work but I hope you have found something fulfilling to do in your time off.
Yes, I still read all comments, thank you. I am enjoying retirement and I’m having trouble finding the time to everything I want do 🤣👍👍
Would you not have been able to drive it in manual on your last shift instead of ATO? Or is this not allowed?
Can be done, but you have to speak to line controller
Yes, I could have asked, but honestly I did prefer ATO, had I preferred driving manually I probably would’ve asked to 👍👍
Yes I could have asked to but I honestly preferred ATO. If I preferred driving manually I would’ve probably asked to 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea I think the problem with PM mode is as you will know, it's quite restrictive and easy to loose time as it's a lot more difficult to drive like ATO
@@Matty12333 absolutely, you know it 👍👍

Are conductors allowed to whistle to other conductors as a way of saying farewell? Congrats on your retirement btw
Thank you for your “ congrats”.
It has been known but the whistle is not often used like that 👍👍
How retirement going I hope it going well
Thank you, yes it’s going good better than I expected 👍👍
How long were your shifts usually?
Thank you for asking that question.
London Underground train operators are contracted and paid for 35 hours per week however they are rostered 36 hours a week averaged over the length of the roster.
There is a 30 min unpaid meal break on every duty. So on average a shift would be around 7 1/2 hours.👍👍
@@itsjustanidea thank you for the information as I’ve always wondered about the work hours.
@@itsjustanidea so it’s like a 4-5 day work week?
@@allenmondesir it’s all based on a 5 day working week. Within this , there is the possibility to work shorter weeks 2, 3 or 4 days and on the Jubilee line and a few others there is the night tube at weekends. 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea did you always work the same line or did the supervisors rotate the train operators around on various lines?
I'm sure now that you've got into the TH-cam videos game you'll be finding many more things to make videos about. Retirement is really just a word. Now you can do things at your own pace and video some of them along the way.
Thanks for saying that, and it will be the way I go about things , as long as I enjoy it 👍👍
How has retirement been so far? Do you miss driving on the jubilee line?
Hope it's going well!
Thank you. So far retirement has gone extremely well, not exactly how I expected it to go, but then I didn’t really plan it. I kind of stumbled into it 🤣. There have been some challenges for sure and the best way of describing it is , for me retirement has been like going back to school.
I am planning some videos about my retirement and yes it’s definitely going well and I’m enjoying it 👍👍👍
And it’s a new life now although I do miss the Jubilee line a bit 👍
Quick question but, I recently applied for CSA2 role with LU but it got declined. Is it still possible to re-apply again? also Happy Retirement!
Yes definitely, so many people apply multiple times before being accepted, don’t give up !!
Good luck 👍👍
I think it would depend upon your knowledge of the underground system. I was waiting for a supervisor to add my railcard to my Oyster one day and was approach by several passengers for directions. I pointed each passenger to the right branch and the correct platform. The supervisor said I should get a job with LUL! I have been riding the system for 65 years, so it would be very surprising if I did not know something about it. What Paul says is right, keep applying, get to know the system and stations.
You definitely said 22 years😂
Thanks yes, I think it was one of those little tricks the mind plays, I had just mentioned 5 more stops, then the 22 years and my brain mixed them up 🤣🤣👍
