    This noise is created by the nut being very slightly under torqued, this allows a tiny amount of movement on the axle splines, you will hear a metallic creaking sound, usually at very low speed, when you change from stationary to moving, also the tiny bit of moment will sound like differential backlash clunking at speed when transitioning from load to coasting and to engine braking. This nut is meant to be about 250NM and should be done up using a torque wrench. The nuts are a single use nut, so if you tighten it and it fixes the sounds, and comes back quickly, remove the nut, remove the axle, clean the splines, re assemble and use a new nut when you re-assemble. Be sure to only use a GENUINE nut from Mitsubishi. It's a good idea to use a torque wrench on the nut every service (10,000kms) then you will never get the noise. Do not use lock tight.Do this on all 4 wheels !

      Mr Digz I have another problem which I can't seem to fix.. after driving for about 20km or 25 min at 100kmh the orange diff light starts flashing. When I switch the van off and on again then it goes away. What do you suggest I look for or what test do I do?

    Hi Mr. Digz first of all that you for sharing all this information about Pajero or, as it's called here in Mexico Montero, I've eared this noise in mine, and I will check if this is the problem. Thanks again, there is almost no info about Pajeros in my country.

      What is the noise exactly?

    • @johnXm
      @johnXm 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@7Logik It's a strange sound, I don't know how to describe it in words, but I imagine it as if two dry gears were grinding together. It is very easy to identify it, lower the door windows, press the brake pedal and change from reverse to driver and vice versa giving time for the transmission to change gears.

    Good video
    EXCEPT the use of the rattlegun - instead of torque wrench to correct amount ... 220Nm

    The noise or thud sound can also occur when getting on and off the accelerator too

      I have that problem on my V80, i thought i comes from the rear drive shaft or even transfer case, it occours when i accelerate abruptly or let go of the accalerator suddenly.

    Hello, great video and info. What is the torque spec for tightening this nut?

    • @Jonesey30000
      @Jonesey30000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      220NM is the correct torque.

  • @totome2206
    @totome2206 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Apparently this is a very common problem.
    I had this clonk noise for a long time, one of the rear nut was ok but the other was loose.
    After locking again the nut (220Nm), problem solved.

    What is the cause of unwanted sound?

  • @proximilian
    @proximilian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello, Sir Digz. I have a creaking noise at the rear axle when changing from P--> R-->D. Also the same noise can be heard when I start moving forward rapidly. Could the loosening of the bolts (like you showed) be the reason for that sound? What do you think according to your experiеnce with Pajero IV? I went to the service but the guys had no ideas where that sound comes from. They only saw that moving (rotating by hand) the rear propeller shaft makes knocking sound, but not sure are these two things connected. Please give me an advice. And thanks in advance, sir :)

      1. Make it used or up the car in the lifter. Check over all under chases.. 2 / check the lower arm assy used try bar tools for atouchment the portion .( 3) upper arm assy (4) retight rear axle assy

      @proximilian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your quick answer, sir. All of the suspension is checked. Nothing found. Only the rear axle is not checked for loosening. I was a bit confused that could be possible, but as shown in your video it is possible. I will try. Do you think that loosening of the rear axle nuts can be as well the reason for that knocking sound when rotating by hand the rear propeller shaft?

    Hi my friend. I just gave it a try on retightening the rear bearings. But the noise (tuc) when engage de reverse gear is still there. The nut was very tight already, way over de 220N.m indicated on the service manual. I had to apply around 600 to 700N.m to turn it about 30 degrees. My pajero has 250.000 km and the noise also appears if I move fast the gear lever from R to D. Can you suggest something else to check in my car? Cheers from Brazil
