I read somewhere that contemplating your own insignificance is called "the sublime". It's a philosophical term that refers to "the witnessing of greatness so big, immaculate or incalculable that replace any sense of fear or existentialism into peace and acceptance".
Maybe that's what he saw on Sebas, Ainz and Cocytus at the end of his time.
People are disappointed with Brain's end and the duel. What they don't realize is that Brain stood in front of a mountain so large it's peak couldn't even be seen and said, "You're going to move for ME."
Cocytus said, "Yes, yes I will."
Sure compared to what we know about the guardians and Ainz's guild, it doesn't seem like much. In reality, it's not even half of what is needed to beat them... But Brain is the only completely human in existence to land a blow on *two* of them. In any other story, he would have been the main character and he would have cut them down... but this is Overlord so we get one slash and we move on to the next part of the story.
But people don't know the context of the novel, that shit had me in so much tears reading it.

I started being interested in him when he managed to clip the nail of Shalltear since the Guardians should have physical damage nullification if the enemy was too low level

Overlord's the only isekai anime I've seen that's managed to make a supporting character go through an entire arc of his own and have fans actually like it
I'm going to miss this show after the novel ends. This world was one of a kind compared to other Isekai. The only other Isekai that got me this engaged are Grimgar of ash and re:zero.

because they are the hero of the story... not a successful one but a hero still

Overlord has so much worldbuilding potential, and various narrative branches that could still be followed. However I understand why Maruyama would want to stop working on Overlord after writing this series for over a decade.
Brain's attack didnt trigger cocytus's low tier damage nullification barrier, meaning brain is the only person in the new world to actually deal the bare minimum 1 damage to him.
He truly earned his respect as a warrior, cocytus may never know defeat in the new world, but brain let him know a truly honorable warrior can exist here. One who would stand infront of certain death for the smallest victory
In Ragnarok online, there was a Dark Lord who slaughtered many 2nd jobbers. Then there was this novice who managed to hit a critical 1 damage hit to the Boss monster before dying....
...Brain's blow never landed. He didn't deal ANY damage to Cocytus. That's why when they show the True Nail Clippers slashes converging on Cocytus, the returning blow shatters straight through them.
Not true, true nail clipper didn't connect. Cocytus killed him before it could.
Brain was a true warrior to the end, but I have to admit I feel sorry he wasn't even able to land a single hit, but I'm glad Cocytus treated his death with the respect it deserved. As a Warrior himself.
I think the only man who could ever kill cocytus is technoblade. Technoblade never dies!
How about Climb?
I'm fairly certain he did land a blow. It didn't do any damage, but like the Lizardmen, he did manage to touch him. Novel readers please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Cocytus choosing to go around Brain and allow him the small victory of protecting the path forward, even if it was just a small patch, was great. Honestly my favorite scene from the whole anime thus far.

One thing that always impress me is that Brain's strongest skill is named "nail clipper". Random people may thought that that name is so weird or kinda "weak" . But we overlord fans understand that it is the most suitable name.

Having a fingernail cut damages you but does not hurt at all as it dosa not have nerve endings. The damage is negligible anyway.

Brains level 40 attack is a huge achievement alot of people seem to kinda brush off I feel. In a world where gaining just one level takes copious amounts of work and intense hardship with anymore than that needing years of grinding producing an attack that jumped 10 levels is practically godlike in the new world especially under the short amount of time brain had. R.i.p my favourite character and a legend among men.

Yeah, people really disregard his death. I got this same feeling when clementine died, as psycho as she was she was still rare in comparison to most humans in the new world. When ainz crushed her I just saw that as a waste.

The problem is that it's meaningless. Being Level 40 in Overlord means you're less powerful than the monster Ainz uses to pull his carriage.
One redditor commented on how Ainz's horses or atleast some of them are level 70 and if he let one rampage across the country it'd be nearly impossible to stop.
When even the canon fodder at his disposal are 30 levels higher than the strongest guy in their world, it's hard to care if someone is level 4 or 40.

Ainz is practically a undead eldritch god ruling over what's essentially the underworld so nobody expects anyone to be effective against him. It's like someone getting close to half as strong as a polar bear, it would still be impressive.

One small note I wish he could've added. The respect Cocytus gave him was so massive that he walked around him to not sully the spot he stood. He gave him that much respect til the end. The anime shows it but most won't know how much meaning it had.

The respect that Cocytus gave Brain is so much bigger when you thing about it. Nazarik's army was unstoppable, you couldnt even change the direction of it. Every time you see Nazarik's army move it runs over everything in its path, its the unstoppable force. Brain made the army move. He was the immovable object that deflected the army. Even if it was only one block away he stopped Nazarik.
And Cocytus froze that event in time, preserving both the bravery of the warrior who faced him and the patch of ground that warrior defended.
I believe that a level 100 being can easily give single gentle slap to the face of human to end there lives

The LN really makes Brain sound like a protagonist of any normal show. Breaking the laws of the world to surpass humanity's limits is pretty badass.
The irony is that this was the moment that Ainz was talking about to Climb...

Cocytus is a chip off the old block from his creator as both are highly honourable warriors.
Brain is the epitome of what hard work can achieve and the fact that he reached lvl 40 stats is highly commendable. (LvL 40 is basically realm of heroes like Zeshi's group. The difference is that Brain is just a human while Zeshi's group are descendants of the players before)

But she's not a strong race where he stats are high or she didn't min-max or have a ideal build (likely spread all over so she has no 'weakness' but also no strengths), also she likely has 'terrible' gear. Look I knew she was bad when the author had to state on Twitter that 1v1 she beats Lupusregina...she's one of the weakest Maids. And maids aren't equiped with Divine gear. CZ Delta is one of the lowest levels but like Nabe she's min maxed. CZ has one of the highest atk damages on her datasheets and Nabe is pure magic dmg. That's how I caught on how weak she really was. If out of all the maids you can choose you pick one of the weaker ones then you know she's not that high. Also Brain surpassed the realm of heroes, he didn't say it in this video but Brain could one shot a Death Knight with that attack. Why? Because like Cocytus' master Brain when full in on attack. His estimated lvl 40, by Cocytus, would be similar to CZ Delta. Where he put everything in attack damage.
More like level 30, but finally managed to make one attack on par of a lvl 40.
The fact that Cocytus pulled out a "god slaying" sword shows how much respect is being given to brain
Not only that, it was his creator, Warrior Takemikazuchi's, given to him before he left Yggdrasil. Cocytus probably my favourite guardian for that
@@chriswebster839 In addition, the sword was a katana, matching Brain's weapon in the duel. This does not detract from what you said, as Cocytus could have pulled out any katana as a show of respect. However, he chose to pull out THAT katana as an additional mark of respect.

Aura disrespected him a lot more than just that.
1. She did not bother introducing herself, nor did she ask the name of the humans before her.
2. She ignored the old man's questions.
3. She offered to spare their lives if they helped her in her mission (which would have been a betrayal by them).
4. She did not even let the old man introduce himself before killing him.
5. She killed him with a random bow, and did it while he was armed only with melee weapons.
6. She ignored the other warriors and stepped over the old man's body.
7. As an afterthought, she set her pets on the survivors.
The symbolic gesture Cocytus extends to Brain upon defeating him(he doesn't walk past him, and instead chooses to take a path that bypasses the one Brain gives his life defending) is also another sign of respect Cocytus shows him.
"I will draw out your best to ensure you go out in as bright a blaze of glory as you are able. Then I will respect your will to stand your ground and not intrude on the path you died to defend."

Gazef and Brain were so likable characters. I'm impressed, how honourable deaths they were given by the author. With presentation of warrior code and honour given by Cocytus to Brain I almost cried a little. Just like you said Aninews, letting get him prepared for battle and push his limits was the best thing opponent could give you. It wasn't crushing a bug, but proper duel (even with obvious results from the start). And getting around their arena to show more respect. To think of it, I wonder if Brain would be able to achive more in a case of getting better gear. Just like Gazef was powerful after getting national treasure armor and sword. Maybe then he could be a trainer working for Nazarick.
IIRC, all things equal, gear could compensate for like 20 levels of difference between yourself and an opponent. Brain was lvl 30 and had developed techniques that rivaled the likes of which one would have expected of a level 40. Brain's katana is already a magical item and he couldn't use his fancy techniques if he had to swap to a completely different magical weapon, so Brain could only use magic jewelry and armor to improve his build. Realistically, he could probably be geared up to level 45-55 if Nazarick lent him some appropriate equipment.
@@bodaciouschad I wasn't expecting to boost him to level 100. I was just thinking about it and letting him be a trainer, cause that was what they were trying after conquering lizard men. They were trying to boost death knight and Hamsuke, so maybe Brain's expertise would be helpful.
No, Brain got the honorable duel, Cocytus atleast had the decency to actually fight him head on while Ainz just froze Gazef in place with his broken magic and instant killed him.

Ainz give Gazef his wish to not be ressurected. I mean he put on him curse preventing ressurection, which wouldn't be lifted by new world mages, only Ainz could.

Ainz fought Gazef like he would in proper PVP. With delayed magic and clever use of time stop instead of a simple grasp heart.
In something like Jujutsu Kaisen. it would be the equivalent of a special grade sorcerer using his domain on a C grade sorcerer.
It's satisfying to see the peak of a character like Brain and going as far to break that ceiling of his limits to challenge Cocytus.
A valiant man that died once. I hope after when the kingdom remains as rubble, he's the only thing that remains untouched.

@@hohenburg5497 I didn't see any implications he was taken in the anime, but if thats the case, its definitely a better deal. I'd like for him to have a second lease on life. Ainz himself wanted adventurers to explore and discover, if he could join in on that it would probably be a lot better than dying for a corrupt country.

and then unglaus, a man who faced odds stacked so high that he literally broke the fucking laws of reality to grow balls bigger than any other.
i respect these 2 more than anyone else in overlord as it stands right now.
zanac was a mere human who talked to ainz as if he was one as well which was amazing.
and unglaus defeated all odds to become probably the strongest man in the world at that single moment.

unglaus became one of the strongest but even among "normal humans" the captain of the black scripture (not zesshi she's a godkin, i mean the regular human dude) would still be way stronger then him, tho still nothing compared to a guardian but the dude's like level 68, which is INSANE for the standerds of this world, dude basically BODIES any of battle maids except nabe and omega, and nabe would only be evenly matched with him
It's funny how Brain became the pinnacle of mankind for a brief moment and it was still just a speck of dust compared to Bone Daddy
I like to think that Cocytus brought Brain back to his floor and is preserving him as a trophy of sorts. Perhaps even resurrecting him to train him as his own apprentice, if Ainz would allow it. Hopes and dreams.

Yes he probably kept Brain but theres no way he'll try/ask to resurrect him. Cocytus already acknowledged Brain's resolve when fighting him (i.e Brain fully knowing that he'll die) and resurrecting him will only trample on that said resolve. As a Warrior, pretty sure that Cocytus wouldn't do anything like that (unless Ainz asks ofc)
I dont think theyll ressurect brain. Same reason with gazef , even momonga put spell that make ressurection impossible to gazef corpse. Let him rest in peace
@@june3149 Its a little late but i think the dead need to accept the resurrection. At least Ainz was worried about the Warrior God declining the resurrection in front of the crowd.
@@yobelpetra8652 well the spell ainz put on gazef doesnt make it impossible to resurrect gazef actually, but you need resurrection magic that is either tier 10, super tier or a world item to counteract the tier 9 "true death" spell, which for anyone in the new world might aswell be impossible but its not LITERALLY impossible
Man the scene with Brain and Cocytus is just something else, the respect that was shown to Brain both before and after their battle is just perfect. From the exchange of names to patiently waiting for Brain to prepare his final attack and then his preservation in ice and Cocytus taking a path around Brain as to not disrespect him by just walking past as if he meant nothing. Brain died with the honor and respect he deserved being not only the only human to come face to face with many Nazarick’s denizens and survive, but one that was able to inflict damage on one them even if it was nothing more than a fingernail. An amazing end to an even more amazing character.
And buffoons can't comprehend the greatness of that moment. I will say that the novel gave more insight on what he and cocytus were thinking so I can't hate too much.

@@ChristUponus I found it fairly obvious. Cocytus has throughout the show shown that he is an honuorable warrior and that he respects his opponents. I find it both laughable and tragic that some people couldn't comprehend the meaning of Cocytus walking around Brain as if he was an impassable obstacle.

F to pay respects for Brain, he will be missed. A real one from season one. He had a nice character arc, got over his depression and faced his fear. Truly respectable warriors. Rest in peace Brain.

If you all don’t remember cocytus only uses 1 hand attacks with weapons against weaker/less honorable enemies. In the match with brain he chose not only the god slaying katana, he used 2 hands to hold the blade as another sign of acknowledgment for brains resolve and spirit as a warrior. He truly gave him a master level duel of life and death in a single blow. Beautifully done in all honesty.
Him and Gazef. 2 of Re-Estize Warriors that manage to get a somewhat merciful and respectable end when facing the Nazarick.
most of the kindgdom did have a mercyful end, Death is mercy to Nazarick you must not forget.

1:52, 3:55 and 4:25 For those who only watch the anime. Remember, the main equipment used by Pandora's Actor were nothing more but Lower-Class back-up items, and he was prohibited of using meta-magic and was only allowed to used [Summon Undead 10th] twice, and nothing more. The reason why Platinum Dragon Lord thought he can defeat Ainz on a second round, was due to Pandora's Actor can only copy 80% of Ainz's power and was ordered to prolong the fight and lost the battle on purpose just to gather information, not to win a battle. If Pandora's Actor had been more serious and not holding back, maybe he can defeat both Riku Aganeia and Azuth Aindra by himself with great difficulty.
Well considering Ainz has his anti-dragon world item and The Goal of All Life Is Death, he is probably a pretty hard counter to PDL. I'm not sure why PDL was confident he could take Shalltear in his normal body though.
I don't care how strong he is though, all the Guardians w/ World Items in inventory but using normal divine weapons, Victim, Sebas, and Rubedo (who I think counts as a world item herself) dog-piling on him, even without Ainz risking himself, would make PDL very dead.
Genuinely the only part of the anime that has made me tear up like a child.

Seeing Cocytus treat Brain with absolute respect, then, following his defeat not only encase him in ice to be preserved but go *around* the the area Brain had chosen to defend was such a monumental honor I can barely begin to convey its meaning.
It was the absolute epitome of respect. Cocytus had absolutely no reason to stop, no reason to waste any time whatsoever on this insignificant flea. Yet, instead of flicking him aside like the worthless worm he was in the face of someone like Cocytus, Cocytus treated him with honor and respect, honoring his enemy's defiance even in death.
Truly something all should aspire to do/be.
If only we could all treat one another with such respect, most especially those we call "enemy".
Perhaps our conflicts could better the world, no matter the victor, instead of rip it apart.

I forgot about PDL's analysis of of Ainz's guild and the fact the thought that maaaybe they were holding back didn't cross his mind makes me wanna see him unceremoniously 1 shot by someone later for fun.

He seems to be so powerful that the thought of someone holding back against him doesn't even crosses his mind. Ainz, on the other hand, as powerful as he is, is always cautious and considers the possibility of someone being more powerful than him.

I think there was more meaning to having Brain frozen. As we all know resurrection can’t be performed if the body is too deteriorated. I think cocytus recognized his potential. He even monologues about how recruiting him would be an option but since he was a true warrior he couldn’t just do that. Maybe we see Brain later, maybe not. We really don’t know what happens to his body after right?
The fight with cocytus was my favorite part of this episode. It made me really like cocytus more then I had before.

One of my favorite comments in regards to this flight has to be that for One single second Brain halted the unstoppable. His feat was enough to make the stoppable change its course at went around. I give brain mad respect, and wonder if he would’ve become even stronger with Gazef’s relics.

There were 3 criteria for the goblin army.
Nobody in Yggdrasil knew what that 3rd criteria was.
Enri only had it by sheer coincidence. Ainz himself considered it a miracle he couldn't understand.
The goblin horn is a gacha item and with certain condition enri was capable to activate it.

Even though he died, he has gained an achievement that mere mortals wouldnt easily get. He tried his best and pushed himself in using that one move against Cocytus which made him Respect Brain as a true warrior.

As an anime only, i feel the Brain vs Cochytus sequence was done very well, the fact that they showed Cochytus walking around Brain's body just makes it so much better. I always liked Brain so it was very sad to see him die

The fact that cocytus walked around his corpse seems to respect his dying wish, that no one shall pass by him, no one will cross the line infront of him. The ice also shows this as the frost stops infront of him.
I feel this goes to show just how much worrior spirit a monster can have.

What a great scene. Brain overcoming his limits and standing tall against insurmountable odds. Cocytus showing his respect and admiration for another warrior.
The only appropriate part of the battle is that it only took 1 strike for Coyote to kill Brain. And Brain's death meant nothing as 90% of the city still dies.
I do respect the hell out of Overlord for being able to build up a character for multiple seasons, and then kill them in the blink of an eye. And somehow doing it without making the the character's entire arc feel pointless.
Gotta say, well done! Love this series. Sad the show is done for the season, but I'm hoping to still get some overlord content if possible 😆
There is a movie coming up though its release date is probably still a ways off we are likely to get videos on that and the characters it will introduce.
The novel is still going for now, maybe not for long but I'm sure it'll be enough content for another season of two.

@@ChristUponus I believe an alt story does already exist however its not about the game but an alt reality where Momonga got transported all alone without the guardians or Nazarick itself and it was 200 years prior to the current story. I don't remember if its official or not but worth a search if you want more content.

Sebas was likely under watch at Nazarick due to his personal attachments and good nature, likely near Nigredo and the dog-maid. Imagine how poorly things would have gone if Sebas had been allowed to be present for the fall of the kingdom- he'd surely have felt the desire to save at least *some* of the citizens.

Hats off to Brain, his character development is just astonishing. The way he died is just something you have to respect, and even Cocytus of all people does so as well
I have a lot of "Favorite" moments from this season of the show. The Blue Roses turning on their leader to save her, "Ainz" battling PDL, Zannac's death and Ainz's respect for him, the list goes on. But the moment that more often creeps back into my mind has been Cocytus choosing to not trample over a felled warrior that was so honorable. When you consider scale and scope, it truly is a powerful moment.
Brain did have options, (Not being a strategist he didn't realize this) if what Ainz said about that sword was true "It may be able to Kill me" Brain might've had a slightly better chance against Cocytus & Ainz with it than Climb did.
It was true on paper, the sword has the ability to bypass any defensive skill. The problem relies in the fact that Ainz as a 100 lvl player has a really big HP stat, so it would take like thousands hits from that sword to kill him
My interpretation was that the sword was of sufficient data level to bypass Ain's immunity to unenchanted physical attacks and low level attacks. He wasn't saying that the sword was powerful enough to kill him in a single blow or anything- just that it was technically possible to kill Ainz with Razor's Edge. He'd probably had to of stood completely still and let them sever his head for it to do it, but thats better than if the sword was mundane iron and even if Ainz had stood there and let them take their best shot they still would have had no chance of winning.
I've seen somewhere it also needed to be wielded by higher level swordsman for it to actually hurt/kill Ainz.
Swordsman of Gazef's level wouldn't be able to hurt Ainz even with this sword.
I don't think Ainz would lie to someone he respected as much as Gazef. Remember, he accepted to duel him in an official & honorable way, when he could have just crushed him and moved on with life.
Technically speaking that sword can kill Ainz, but... you need to, like, slash him a million time while he's sleeping.
Kind of like in SAO season 1 when the trash tier character keep hitting Kirito but his default HP regen heals more than the damage from all of them combined

I very much liked the part where Cocytus led his forces around Brain's frozen body as a final sign of respect, to not desecrate the final resting place of a fellow warrior
I'm going to assume he's alive because of the fact that Resurrection clearly functions off the quality of the body's state after death.

Well he would probably still rebel against Nazarick even if he was revived because of his pride and honor. And Cocytus(and maybe Sebas) would probably also protest the resurrection of Brain for similar reasons.
Wow, I didn't know all those details about that show down but everything about it was epic and I was so hyped. I haven't read the novel but this has become one of my all time favorites
That scene with Brain and Cocytus was so well written in the LN! Maruyama did an excellent job with Brain's end. Still don't know how he's gonna end this in just three more volumes...

I did not feel too sad about Brain's death. At the very least, he got to battle with a noble warrior and he got to die an honourable death. Compare that to Zanac, who was killed by a cowardly betrayal.

If I'm not mistaken, the show has cuaght up to the LNs and I've heard it said that the Author is reluctant to continue the story. If Overlord continues, it may be with an anime original ending followed by a potential brotherhood-esque retelling at some later date if the LNs ever got finished.
As the LNs are ending at 18 and we're up to #14 in the anime, there's not enough material for another season. All that's left is the 2023 movie.

@@bc1176 Maruyama keeps pushing the number down because I think he just wants to be up and done with Overlord; he's just not interested in writing this type of content anymore. Which given how large of a world Overlord actually is, would have been cool to see it further expanded on, but there's only so much an author can take of developing characters and then killing them off later before it really starts to take its toll on the psyche. Compare Overlord to what he wants to write now, which is a high school wrestling story, which generally doesn't involve killing.
All this fight did was increase the need for someone to come along and finally put Ainz and his group in his place. Hopefully that is the dragon lords or other players.

In the very beginning, my fav character was Cocytus. He looked cool (no pun intended) and cold (no pun intended). But dayum was his story arc and his current self amazing.
that was so bittersweet. it truly was the end of an arc and era. the ending surprised me for this video. it just ended. didn't thank us or ask us to subscribe or anything. Think this one hit Aninews in the feels.

In fact, his existance is a very well kept secret, noone outside of Theocracy's Council and the Black Scripture is suppose to know about it. Thats why they were shocked when mentioned. Brain grew to be one of my favorite characters in this show. And I was so sad that he was most likely going to die.
But his death was so good for him that I cant be mad that he's gone. I just hope his preserved corpse is kept somewhere safe.

I wonder why Ainz never bring anyone he respected or likes back. He casually revived the troll from the Colosseum - it's not even a big deal to him. Maybe COCYTUS would ask Ainz to bring Brain back as his reward after this mission.
My favorite part of the episode was cocytus taking a roundabout way to move forward instead of walking straight past brain after the duel. It was a great way to show that cocytus respected brain's resolve as a warrior.
Us viewers know that he would never defeat a floor master, but regardless I root for him as I want to see a hero succeed going against the villain. Although villains winning are always a breath of fresh air. Contradicting myself lmao.
The fact that cocytus went through an alley to go around Brain instead of passing his preserved body just speaks to his level of honor. It was beautiful
I really liked Cocytus in this but I was kind of disappointed still. If this is a reality in a game, then npcs like Brain should be able to (whether through training, items or magic) get to the same realm of power of other npcs. Cocytus is an npc. It also was sort of bs that the author did not allow Brain to keep the legendary sword of the kingdom. That sword clearly should have been in Brain's possession after the duel between Ainz and Gazef (assuming Ainz honored Gazef and didn't take it (which he didn't)). Yet somehow it was still in the hands of others who clearly had zero intention of using it (except for Climb when pushed to do so later). I wanted to see a fight where one of the main cast actually had a chance of dying for once (even if small). It would have been poetic to see Brain cut Cocytus in half through the middle with a horizontal slash and Cocytus cut Brain in half with a vertical slash. Or, for Brain to cut Cocytus's halberd in half and then win. A draw or win for Brain would have been far more dramatic. Perhaps, despite showing respect to the swordsman, Cocytus still underestimates Brain and doesn't realize that he's fast enough to slash him (and can hurt Cocytus with Gazef's sword). But Brain is so focused on his slash and therefore does not dodge right after it and is cut down himself as I said above only to be frozen by Cocytus's servants at a dying Cocytus's request asking that they both be frozen to memorialize their fight and to only revive them at the demand of Ainz himself otherwise to leave them there as a memorial. It would have been just like the scene already was but twice as awesome. I'm not saying it was a bad fight, just that it was too short and too one-sided to have as much meaning as people read into it.
I love this series, I hope one day you can get through the rest of the anime!
