    There are several different tools you can use for lap joint. A skill saw, like you used, a table saw, a radial arm saw, a router, and even a bandsaw. And of course, like others have mentioned, a dado blade helps tremendously.

      Half lap joints? You don't *need* half lap joints, they just make for a strong connection. Do whatever makes you comfortable.

    I was taught if you have to hit your wood chisel with a hammer, it's not sharp enough, and never, never cut with the blade pointed towards your hands or body. Safety first.

  • @paulgamblin1860
    @paulgamblin1860 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chop saws can be fit with a dado blade that cuts a slot up to 3/4 inch wide depending on the number of chisel blades you add. Adjust the depth, and you can cut the half lap in seconds. And it's smooth finish.

    We built 3 of these for our small farm. They are great for chickens, turkeys, etc. The one downfall for them was our cow used them to scratch on and broken the conduit. My solution was to put on 2 pieces of 16ft cattle panel and on each side I screwed some pallet wood over the edges of the panel to hold them on. With this modification I got even more head space, a sturdier roof and some extra weight because i have had them move with very strong winds. I have friends who have converted from the salatin model to these after seeing mine.

    Built my first suscovich chicken tractor two years ago for my layers. It’s been amazing. Just finishing building my second one that will house our ducks. I modified the latest one to make it smaller as we only have a few ducks. I did have trouble building the door for each but got it done.

    Good for you for learning new carpentry skills my dad's a master carpenter . He always taught the boys. He didn't know I was in the back round watching and learning too! Now I'm the one who uses the skills! Keep learning! You can use a sander to smooth your joint too! And get your self some proper carving tools! ☺

    As others have said, take it from someone that is a builder and a woodworker, a table saw and dado blade would be very beneficial for next time, super easy to use, you’ll love it.

    Love the video and your thought process......learn how to make a mortise and tenon joint and along with the half lap joint you can built anything. I have seen one homesteader build a rain water tower by just screwing together and a dob of glue here and there........no half laps or mortise and tenons and no cross ties......when full there maybe 400lbs of weight up there.......this is dangerous! Just keep on doing what you are doing, learn new skills and have confidence in what you can do.......your on the right path......

  • @jeffhurley756

    Half lap joints are really easy with a table saw, a dado blade and sled for your table saw. I used a router, wish I would have used the table saw. I will do that in future.

    I feel validated this is exactly what me and my brother went through this making mine...also belt sander instead of chisel and worm drive saw makes a regular circle saw look like a chump... I also opted for the 2x4 welded wire instead of chicken wire because I loathe chicken wire... I now hate hardware cloth more than chicken wire though. Thanks for the great content

    • @goldengryphon
      @goldengryphon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chicken wire is the very devil - no strength, doesn't keep small things or persistent things out, and falls apart or rusts through in an eye blink.
      I love the 1 x 1 or varied height fencing. Hardware cloth can be just glorified window screening, but it can also be wonderful for cage floors or making tight (if expensive) fences.

    Hi. You talk highly about how beneficial it is to have a good dog on the homestead. As an owner and farmer I believe in feeding my dogs a raw diet to allow them to thrive, but buying meat is costly where I'm from. I was wondering what is your view on feeding dogs a raw diet? and as you have given tips on raising meat animals on the homestead for human consumption, do you have any tips for raising meat animals as food for dogs? and would it be cheaper than buying the meat for them?

    LOL a half lap is EASY! Measure twice, cut once.... I cut mine a little larger than anticipated bc if you mess up a little then a wood chisel can help shave off what is too big. I've never built a thing before, but I was able to do it easily!

    I would cut first perpendicular cut with tablesaw, then bandsaw the rest, if its on the end of the board. Router for half laps in the middle of the board

  • @arnoldromppai5395

    you can make them half laps the hard way, or use a simple cheap routor and make a fast jig out of junk 2x4's AND YOU GET A CLEAN FINISHED CUT in seconds, ready to put together

    Austin. You have the TH-cam community as a huge wealth of information and how to's at your fingertips. You can earn all the skills you need for this project in one evening. My choice for the lap joints would be a band saw. Quick and super easy. Once you have all your joints cut you can do your celebratory lap (joint) dance. :)

  • @jerrycampbell5506
    @jerrycampbell5506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Set the blade on the table saw at 3/4 height. Set fence 3 1/2” from blade. You can make all your cuts over lapping or knock out the piece like you did. To get a smooth surface you can then run the cut section back and forth over the blade. You need to use a sliding miter to cut the cuts that are in the middle of the boards.

    Austin would have been nice to see John go out and do a video together on a build with you. It's been awhile since we have seen John as I'm sure he is very busy with family, farm and brewery. Another thing for lap joints if you have a table saw is a dado blade can help out. But again a lot of money if you can take the time and do the old fashion way. Nice video and I'm sure John is excited to see these on your farm!

    *WHAT ABOUT AN OSCILLATING TOOL?* For those cuts? very fast (about 20,000 strokes per minute), so it feels more like vibration. An oscillating saw blade is shown; the oscillating tool also works with scrapers and sanding pads. www.harborfreight.com/variable-speed-oscillating-multi-tool-63113.html. I use mine for a ton of stuff!
