  • Many people who are new to woodworking are intimidated by the idea of cutting the half lap joints for a John Suscovich Chicken Tractor. They really aren't hard to dom but seeing them in person can help a lot.

In this video, I demonstrate how to cut a half lap joint easily while building our John Suscovich Chicken Tractor for our fall batch pasture raised poultry. We purchase Cornish Cross from McMurray Hatchery.

I've been working on my John Suscovich Chicken Tractor FOREVER, it seems. We have done modifications to make it an home for our egg-hens. The plans are amazing but, we've seen really hot days (Houston in the summer is awful), really rainy days, and then my husband threw out his back. We are supposed to finish it this weekend. Fingers crossed. (We used our miter saw to cut our half laps.)

Hi Jack. Congratulations on finding the only job that flat head screwdrivers are good for. Hahahaha... Cheers. ~Mike and Ester~

We get late season blight every year, too. We're having good luck with Muscovitch and Speckled Roman tomatoes this year. San Marzano is one of our usual go-to varieties also.

Those are well thought out plans if you have only that tiny bit of scrap. Nice tips on a the half lap. You could do the same with a tablesaw & dado blade, or a router with a straight bit, depending on what tools you have on hand

Didn't have problems with the lap joints, just found that the measurements weren't always accurate. We have two we are putting together and it has been a little frustrating! Would love to see your take on the conduit bending as well🙂

Haven’t gotten to the conduit bending yet.
The newest edition of the book that we have has corrected the measurement errors from before, particularly on the lower front pieces (part G I believe it was).

@@TheMindfulHomestead that tells you how long ago we got the book. It would have been nice to know that though. I can't tell you how many times I re-measured a piece before I figured out that the measurements were wrong

I’m going to have to grab that book. I think my next tool investment is going to be a router for making joints. I do my half laps the way you do but I get super frustrated at the process lol.

Half laps should be done with a router.

When you don’t own a router, you use what you have. Most farmers own a circular saw.

By the time you finish those half laps you could of built and finished the tractor. Big waste of time and energy.
