I found out that if you put them in a toaster oven after you spray them with a little bit of olive oil spray and then lightly salted. They taste great 😋
You can also deal with aphids by leaving a cilantro plant over winter in the same bed when it's flowering it attracts a lot of predatory insects that eat aphids and it gives them a place to hide until the okra gets aphids
Great info! This is my first year growing okra - no flowers or pods yet, just leaves but I'm going to look out for the aphids! I bought insecticidal soap recently for the possibility of aphids on tomatoes so now I just gotta read the bottle on how to use it. We grew up frying okra as a snack in the 60's. Now I'm retired, growing stuff and cooking again.
I use Diatomaceous Earth on the stock and wherever you may see aphids and it discourages them Big Time. Just make sure you use Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth 😊
I love to stir-fry my okra. Very good. I have been getting bumps on my okra. I go into the garden several times a day and never see any bugs, ants, or anything. But now late in the season, I am getting bumps on all my okra. Any help would be appreciated.
I have seen this on my okra as well. It may be the result of stink bugs. They aren't always easy to see on plants, and they will hide. Luckily the damage is superficial and the okra is still fit to eat.
I only have two plants that just started producing, so I've been snacking on a fresh okra every morning. Hoping to harvest enough at once to make a side dish for dinner, probably need more plants though. Love it raw, need to try another variety.
I bet you'll get a good mess pretty soon, they really get going in hot weather. I always say, feed those veggies, so they'll feed you! Neptune's Harvest Fish Fertilizer is something that I apply weekly for sustained production, and I love that time in the garden. Best wishes!
I have been having good luck with Jambalay Okra here in Zone 6. It has been a very good producer. This summer was the hottest and driest that I can remember. It's November 13 now and it is still making a lot of pods.
I set up a new garden bed that is 4X4 & I added a black cloth under to keep weeds not coming up in garden bed. Now I am worried that okra will not grow in them since it doesn’t have much depth to it. Can I still move them to a different place or leave them?
If you planted your okra within the last two weeks, it's probably not established and you could move it. I recommend liquid seaweed for reducing transplant shock and encouraging root development.
New Garden Road thank you so much for replying. I was told by a gardener at appliance store that black cloth I used is just to keep the weeds out so it should be okay. The plants root can go through it & keep growing. Is that true? Also, I moved them as you mentioned just to give them plenty of space. Thanks again.
That is a challenge. I have been impressed with how tough okra plants can be. Mine are having a great season despite the extreme heat, but it requires regular deep watering, and a good layer of mulch.
I'm not exactly sure, but I'll mention some possible causes. 1. Fire ant damage 2. Not enough sun light 3. Moisture stress 4. Excess nitrogen 5. Lack of phosphorous I hope that helps.
Oh, now you're talking about one of my favorite foods! I think many varieties would do just fine, the key might be harvesting them while they are tender. I have grown 'Burgundy' okra several seasons and I like to harvest those when they're about five inches long.
Is it normal for okra transplants to start flowering and producing pods at 7 inches tall? I mean I put them in the ground quick and I figured they would concentrate on speading roots and leafy growth?
Sounds like they’re ready to grow! They can start producing at that size. If they are newly planted seedlings, you can prune away the flowers for the first two weeks to encourage establishment. ☀️
Yes I can, insecticidal soap is considered a low level organic insecticide. It can be made from a concentrated soap such as Dr. Bronner's or others, just be sure it's a soap and not a detergent. The recipe is 1-3 teaspoons of soap per gallon of water. Heavier infestations call for the higher concentrations. Insecticidal soap acts by paralyzing most soft bodied insects. It's a great choice for aphids, spider mites, and larval stages of other insects such as stink bugs.
Hello sir ! I am growing okra plant now . The plant got so many caterpillar in it . There are so many tiny wholes in the leaves.... I have tried neem spray , soap spray etc ...but it is not getting controlled... please help
Hello! Caterpillars can be controlled with B.t. (Bacillus thuringiensis). It only works on caterpillars. Have you seen caterpillars, or just the tiny holes on the leaves?
@@hemapriyag2901 Oh no! Try some B.t. Apply it in the evening, make sure to spray the underside of the leaves, and after the caterpillars eat the B.t., they will stop eating. You can reapply weekly to control subsequent generations as needed.
I have so much trouble growing okra! I must've tried it 3 different times now. What always happens is when it gets around 5 inches or so, 1 month after planting the seed, the two side round leaves start to turn yellow. And eventually, a slow process, but whatever happened to those lower leAves starts happening upwards and the plant never reaches a good size or matures or flowers. Any idea what this is? I have no problem growing cucumber, tomato, peppers, peas, but I just can't seem to get okra!
If you live in an area where nematodes are a problem, try adding shrimp meal to the soil. Nematodes can cause okra plants to die, but the chitin in the shrimp meal is said to kill nematodes. I used to have the same problem you describe, but since I've started using the shrimp meal, I have fewer plants die. If nothing else, shrimp meal is a great source of nitrogen and phosphorous, so it's worth a try. Good luck!
Don't slice the okra. Peel the tops off without exposing the the inside which is slimy. Just add your spices to the okra and saute in olive oil till slightly crisp.
As an African, I for many years, assumed that white people didn't eat okra or even know what it is.. it's great to see how far my favourite vegetable has travelled!

Yeah, that sounds super easy! I've baked them in the oven like that and I love how they get a little crispy.
You had me at Gangsta vegetable then the vid was bless!
Many thanks!!

Thanks for the tip! ☀️
Great tips and your foodie comments at the end made me grin, thanks! 😄
Thank you and I'm glad you appreciate my antics. 😆
Put a little slice of a tomato in the water . When you boil the okra. No more slime, or a little Catsup / Ketchup in the water works also.
Thanks! That’s a great tip! 😎

I love eating raw tender okra in my garden!
Tastes like summer!

Never had it baked but I'll have to try it.
It's definitely worth a shot, and if you grow a lot of okra, it's a good way to change up your preparation.
Please i plant my okra but is not doing fine i don't know because now we are in snow can i plant it indoor so that i can use heater as sun for it
I recommend waiting for late spring. Okra loves hot weather, and it will be much easier to grow then.

Whoa!!

I live in Houston and this heat is very unforgiving. My okra plants are struggling in this insane heat

I had this problem last year with fire ants on my okra. Could you explain insecticidal soap? I am a new gardener and not sure what that is. Thanks

@@newgardenroad Thank you so much! I will be using so many of your tips for spring!
I love okra but by August I’m so sick of it. 😂. Chop it up and freeze for winter gumbo or dehydrate for storage.
I understand that, once it gets growing it just won't stop.

Sorry to hear that. How often do you water, and for how long? Have you pulled up the sick plants to inspect the roots?
Do you live in a cold climate that doesnt heat up very much?

Do I need to stake my okra?
Not usually, but I have done that in the past when I felt like young plants needed extra support after a storm.
For healthy snack, cut up put on salt, pepper and garlic powder and bake in the microwave!
😋
Are those types perennials ?
No unfortunately
@@newgardenroad hybrid it with abelmoschus manihot and see what happens. You can thank me later

Not just fire ants. Regular ants also. Crest tooth paste put on the bite. Keep the bite from going to a blister.

Mine is growing so slow. Or seems to be.
They will start off slow, mine are just taking off since transplanting on May 2nd, but I'm starting to harvest daily.
