The "tool belt" that you're wearing is, in fact, a Carpenter's apron, which is different from a framers rig. A Framer's rig is meant to have the pouches hang at the sides so that the framer can slip easier between the studs and rafters/trusses.
I am a 45+ year carpenter and I have worn my Carpenter's apron the proper way which is in front. Which is why Tim and Al wore their Carpenter's apron the proper way...in the front. Sorry to say, you were taught incorrectly as a child!

I'm pretty new to all this tool-belt stuff, but as much I did my research... well mostly looking through various products - I've noticed the word "apron" on such belts, then It made sense to me why those ware worn in front. Weird, that a professional didn't came a cross that. Maybe he just bought one an never looked for more?

As an electrician, I have a drill holster and an electricians pouch. I keep them at my sides. Holster on the right because I'm right handed, and hand tools to the left. I'm a minimalist when it comes to my belt set up. Anything heavier then I use a bigger setup but with shoulder straps.

I have multiple sets of bags. I wear them differently depending on what job I'm doing. For framing, they are on my sides me so I can easily pass through between wall studs. My siding and trim bags ride on my back. It makes it easier to safely negotiate ladders and scaffolding. However, if im doing interior trim, I like an apron style set of bags in the front. It makes it far less likely that my tools will accidentally gouge the walls or damage the trim.

@@VCGConstruction I have an old set of Craftsman bags for framing. I also have a few sets of CLC bags. They're not the most expensive, but I spend more money on the tools that actually do the work, and opt for a more affordable option in my bags. As long as they keep my tools where they're supposed to be, that's all that matters.

We were thought to wear pouches on the sides. Not back or front, but I’ll tell you that it really depends on the industry you are in. When you do all of aluminum trim, it helped us to use pouches as resting points. You can rest one end of the trim or fascia on something in the distance when you are up on the ladder and the other end on your pouch and make all the cuts you needed to do to it. Whenever the pouches would end up on the front after a while, they would really be hazard, because you can try to lean on the ladder or wall and you end up pushing yourself off balance or even scratch some trim. So sides always worked for us the best.

I’ve always had my tool belt to the front. I’m a skinny guy and finding tool belts to even fit me is a challenge. Most small tool belts I could find that fit me had the clip style buckle so if I put it in front like you do every time I bent over my belly would unlatch the clip and my belt would fall off. The older I get the harder it is for me to wear a bigger tool belt so I use cloth nail bags now and they are better worn at front. But to me I think there is no right or wrong way as long as your comfortable and productive in getting work done.

30 years ago I did a lot of framing and roofing. Pneumatic guns where kind of a newer thing, so I wear mine to the side to keep my stick nails and basic tools at my side, and my coil nails and two way radio in the back. Now I do more repair work and remodeling, so I do not wear a belt much anymore, unless I am up a latter, or on a pick. I still wear it to the left side.

Framed houses for the last 8 years, always wear mine to the front/sides, I use floating pockets so I can slide them wherever is comfortable, suspenders only in winter in Alberta, Canada when I'm wearing extra layers. Never had an issue with climbing ladders or in trusses, in my opinion having the least amount of weight in the belt is best, I keep it very minimal and use a coil nailer so I don't have extra nails on me. Weight in the front give you better balance and less likely to fall off a wall or something.

I think this depends what line of work you’re doing because I even know guys that wear them on their sides. Me for example im a 3rd gen custom hardwood flooring and fine carpenter. I have 4 different bags set up for what job it is. My finishing bags sit up front. And my framing bags set to the side. This is just how I personally grew up and still continue to practice.

I’ve always worn a single pouch on the right hip which also holsters my hammer. If I know I need snips I holster them on the left hip. Majority of the time that I wear one I just need a handful of small tools and screws or nails. I don’t holster my drill/driver or anything else bulky as I have a bad back. Since I’m a heavy DIYer I don’t worry as much about having everything on me unlike my real job as an auto tech. I keep everything I use on a job within 2-3 feet of me so at the most I just need to turn around and switch sockets or whatever with the stuff laid out behind me.

It does make sense. Thank you.

When I was an electrician I always wore my belt on my sides. We were always pulling cable and moving in tight spots, etc. but NEEDED everything with us due to where we were working.
Now I do remodels, decks, etc. and wear to the sides still.
I roll a tool cart when woodworking in the shop. Zero interference when using dangerous machinery.

I have little "mods" I do as well. Like with my screws and staples pouch's I load those and put a magnet on top of them so I'm not stabbing my fingers, or getting something shoved between my nail and bed. I put electrical tape over the magnets on my torpedo level so if it picks up metal shavings I can peal it off and put a new piece down. I don't like wearing my bags if I work on top of a ladder so I had a mark sewn in to it to show me the top of a ladder size. I am always looking for ways to work smarter and not harder.

I do high rise concrete formwork and wear a construction harness with a midsection belt and positioning d rings for when I have to hook on to forms or rebar. Everything is rigged on to the harness.I carry Occidental fatlip bags just behind my hips and a Klein canvas bag at the back for bolts, wire. Spray paint, water and symons form wedges. To the right of that is my hammer cradle. My fasteners of different sizes are on my left with my speed square and tape. My wire cutters and chalk line is on my right with my pencils and keel. For climbing over formwork, up columns, bending to mark layout lines or carrying lumber it's the way I was shown in the union and it has worked well for me for years.

I think it's pretty clear. In the front it makes bending forward awkward. In the back you have near zero visual of your tools. That specific set up you have though is clearly meant to be worn only one of two ways. That belts main purpose really looks to be for guys that work in finer more detail stuff. As others have said, "carpentry", I'd guess finish stuff (maybe some rough stuff too). Everyone I've seen on a jobsite, commercial and residential have all worn belts where the bags are allowed to rest on the sides of your hips. Easy access, can still bend forward, if needed can take glances at tools to ensure you're both grabbing them and putting them away correctly (though most guys get a muscle memory and can do it blind).
I've always worn a belt with the main tools on each side of me, and a couple odd tools in the back (drywall hatchet, drywall foot lift).
For this subject, in reality, it doesn't matter how you wear your tools as long as you get the work done correctly and promptly. Whatever works for you, works. You'll see guys doing something "wrong" every single day but if they do the work, it's good and prompt, it doesn't matter.
If you've made it this far, you've probably guessed I'm a drywaller. Now you may be wondering how I formed such coherent sentences and thoughts. I am in fact, a " high functioning drywaller". lol, yes, they exist.

Pouches on the front or back slow you down. With your average lay out you have 14 1/2 inches to slip pass studs or rafters.
Left side pouch: chalk line, tape, speed square, 3inch gun nails, maybe a cats paw and chisel
Right side pouch: pencils and markers, hand drive nails, knife, chisel, big pouch changes depending on current work.
Stiletto hanging in the back can grab with either hand.

I have a Milwaukee tool belt that’s adjustable. I work at a lumber/material yard so I don’t need more tools than a tape measure, hammer, we use aviation snips to cut bands of steel that the lumber usually comes strapped in. I also like to keep an extendable bolt cutter handy for the heavy gauge ties the 20 foot rebar comes delivered in. Other than that a box cutter, a pocket blade, and I’m set. So I really only use one pouch. Keep it to my right, then because I’m frequently jumping in and out of forklifts and flatbed trucks, I keep the hammer to my left.

I've been a painter for 21 years now and the construction company I work for actually build homes so I've been doing many different aspects of construction, when I first started painting I worked with some older journeyman painters and that's when I first got introduced to the tool belt because they wore them, they could carry their hammer, wood filler, nail sets, punches, putty knifes, and I bought a little tool belt because they were never running back and forth to their tools and they could move right along and continue preparing trim work or walls and ceilings or anything they were working on and I was repeatedly running back and forth to my tools and I started feeling like an idiot and counter productive so started wearing tool belts ever since. I'm 33 & have been framing/renovating homes for most of that time, other than the 5-6, maybe 7 years recently that I have been building metal buildings, pole barns, & doing quite a bit of metal roofing in all aspects listed above... I have tried to wear one of those with the pouches in front.. but even though I could usually get by with it that way.... It definitely wasn't comfortable to do any bending over which is a pretty, fairly common occurrence at the job site... I 100% always prefer to wear the pouches on my sides but to the back a little from my actually sides.. I usually keep a hammer in the back as well as some snips for trimming, cutting holes in metal roof sheets.. Also, I like to have one of the metal belt clip aluminum hooks in the front to my right a little so I can always have my drill ready & easily available for usage needs that may arise... Enjoy

🤣🤣 the show was called "Home Improvement" and the character Tim Allen had his own cable show called "Tool Time." Fun fact, that's actually what launched Pamela Anderson's career. I'm a pro drywall finisher so not much need for tool belt but have mechanical tools in a bucket with it's own tool apron with pockets inside and outside. When called upon, however, I use a tool belt NOT a tool apron. 3 pocket suede pouch on the left for fasteners. Hard leather electricians pouch on the right for tools, including hammer but only for wood framed jobs. A metal stud job shouldn't require a hammer often enough to carry one at all times. The banging on your leg from the handle while walking.... ugh! Not to mention the extra 32oz weight all day. Hanging drywall on wood studs should only require a 16-20oz hatchet-style drywall hammer. No shoulder straps. There's thick enough "weight belts" available now to render them obsolete. Although the shoulder straps with a tape measure pattern were pretty cool looking back in the day! 😁 Thanks for the topic, Vince, and God be with both you and Nick alike! 😁👍✌

I'm a GC and I do primarily carpentry, remodels, and lots of exterior work and wear my tool belt and pouches on the back and sides. Occasionally I add a bolt bag up front to hold nail strips when framing but it doesn't get in the way, because if you do any bending/kneeling or climbing ladders you have to wear it on the back, but I can see how it would be advantageous if you stood upright all day in a shop setting to wear everything up front. Different techniques for different applications. The door installer I used to use wore his belt up front and it looked totally absurd to me but he did amazing work and practically worked miracles so I kept my thoughts to myself. Now I realize his position choice probably worked best for him whether it was intenetional or not.

I've always worn my tool belt backwards, with the pouches at the back... because it was just more ergonomic that way.
Primary reason was because you can carry heavy equipment, wood, whatever... supporting the load against your body, without the tool belt getting in the way.
Also makes it easier to climb ladders, by several orders of magnitude.
