The French Suites, BWV 812-817, were composed between 1722 and 1725. The suites were later given the name 'French' as a means of contrast with the English Suites.
The name was popularized by Bach's biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel, who wrote in his 1802 biography of Bach, "One usually calls them French Suites because they are written in the French manner." This claim however, is inaccurate; like Bach's other suites, they follow a largely Italian convention.
They consist of the traditional dances like Allemande, Courante, Menuet, Gavotte, Gigue, Sarabande as well as some less-frequently encountered dances like the Anglaise, Polonaise, Air, Bourree and Loure. These suites lack preludes (except Suite No.4 under BWV 815a) and are shorter and less elaborate than the Partitas and English Suites.
As usual with Bach, parts of the suites were recycled from earlier works or sketchbooks, and they underwent several revisions after publication. There is no surviving definitive manuscript of these suites, and ornamentation varies both in type and in degree across manuscripts.

Che bello questo leggero ritmo di danza. Una semplicità disarmante , senza alcuna forzatura e artificio. Il gioco delle voci...magnifico e il suono inarrivabile. È un piacere ascoltare Richter che interpreta Bach.

Yes Larrocha is superb BUT my word Richter gets the steady base combined with lyrical, free ranging, cantabile of the treble perfectly. Thought-provoking without any unneeded extras Thankyou to xper2xper for this beauty.

Thanks so much! I recently resumed piano lessons after a 48-year break, and have been working on this suite for quite a while. Very nice to listen to it!

most people think that allemandes are supposed to be fast and graceful when really, it can be graceful with or without the speed. Richter proves this through his playing. Excellent example of this piece. :)

He finds the absolute sweet spot between staccato and legato phrasing in each of the eight movements. And his relaxed, singing line is hypnotizing. Thanks very much for your posts devoted to this Suite.

Unaccustomed sequence of movements in the latter portion. I believe that the correct sequence is Polonaise-Menuet-Bouree-Gigue.
The Menuet and Bouree are frequently reversed in sequence to provide a greater degree of contrast but this is incorrect.

I don't have No.5 from Richter in my library and I'm not sure if he's recorded that. You sure it exists ?
    Cheers!

Despite all the praise Richter is getting here for this performance, I have to say that it sounds pretty lifeless and joyless to me. Don't feel at all the "dancing" spirit that this piece should evoke.

+lourak613 I could not agree more. Toward the end of his life he was very depressed and during an interview he stated verbatim that he hates himself. How sad. This sounds like this recording was made during that period.
