This sarabande under Richter's hands... just out of understanding which could provide our physical essense of a human being... just such a cosmic music... so unbelievably deep, scary and beautiful at the same time! One of the greatest moments in music I have ever heard.
I'm just listening to this by richter for the first time and only as far as allemande, and was browsing comments as I listened.Your comment caught my eye because I was thinking about how this great pianist compared to Glenn. { I am into Courante now}. My thinking so far is that this is a bit pedestrian compared to Glenn; Glenn really knew how to bring JSB alive like no other can and I totally agree with you Richter has weight. Now Sarabande and it is Bach's genius that can write such aching in music and suspense which is beautiful and Richter must be up there as one of the best but I feel Glenn just edges it ! I like Schiff too but I have not heard him tackle this yet. I find it hard to get away from Glenn's interpretations of JSB; these guys are all brilliant and if I hadn't heard Glenn then there would be tough competition. Still listening thanks for your comment...quite captivating music..sublime. Gavotte is superb and jolly, amazing ! Bach in my opinion is Baroque jazz !
@@carltonafghan i too, am presently listening to Argerich play the English 2 vs Glenn and Richter on the English 3 vs Glenn and....Gould was on some other planet from everyone else. Argerich was perhaps the fastest pianist in modern times; she sounded slightly rushed in certain movements, but still quite brisk. Gould finished the Gigue in a minute less while never sounding at all taxed or failing to hold notes. Likewise with Richter, another exceptionally quick pianist. Given the reaction many of these greats had to being asked about Bach, and their responses to "just go listen to Glenn Gould," it's kind of clear that they felt their own interpretations were wanting in relation to his. Evgeny Kissin actually stated that one of his peeves was being asked why he doesn't do more Bach...and he was actually quite good at it. Gould cast a very long shadow. He changed the Moscow Conservatory; not Richter or Gilels or Lupu or Ashkenazy.
it is quite entertaining and really unique how the (flavor) of Ricther`s Bach is completely different than Gould`s Bach. It is as if we are listening to two different composers. Moreover, i find myself selecting Ricther vs. Gould depending on the mood of the day; its magnificent and only speaks to the depth and multilayeristic nature of JSB`s music ...
its absolutely correct to have his own opinion and preferences.. nobody judges you for it :) .. before descovering Richter I also thought Goulds music couldnt be topped.
this mfer was badass. was there in 54 when Gould played moscow. This is so quintessential Richter....what a giant. One of a small few I can listen to play Bach. But he wouldn't have played it like this were it not for Gould
In his hands, the repeated notes that start off the tuttis* in the Prelude have an unusual sustained, almost ringing quality. I haven't heard this effect before in this piece; it's quite salient; maybe it's even difficult to pull off. I don't know whether I like it or not, though. Maybe, Rusted Crust, that's what you mean by "too much pedal"? * The Prelude, I believe, is really an Italian-style concerto with alternating full "orchestra" and "solo" sections with the beginning repeated in full.
If you are referring to the background, it could be easily taken for New York. Just the architecture of the early 20th century. However, if you are referring to the Richter's rendition of Bach, you are completely off the target. Not everything is politics.
The controlled power of Richter, e.g. this Suite vs his Brahms 2 concerto, never ceases to amaze, and delight me. Thank you

Music and photo means so much together.
I'm into Richter nowadays. Perfect performance..pure pathos..Amazingly brilliant!!
Richter, he respects every note and sound and gives it the times it needs
Very well said ! Thank you.
this is so amazing.....I love the way he plays Bach
I like Gould's interpretation for its purity, Richter's for its weight and Schiff's for its lightness :)

the trill on the 19:03. Richter is really enigma.

Well, try Gavrilov. Gavrilovs Bach is very special.
Great recording - thanks!
Hearing the first chords you realize that this is a genius.
The Sarabande is ridiculous. Utterly beautiful
Richter rules.
This piece can’t be performed better.
Such clean playing. Bravo!
I've never liked Gould's Bach.....but I love Richter's Bach....just my flavor.

Me also !!!
Try Gavrilovs Bach. For 3d view.
la bach de gould est pourtant supérieur.
Definitely sublime ~
Thank you for sharing this! Thank you!

Sublime

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
quite correct
the courante is similarly played as this in 6 suite
mooi
what ARE you talking about?
Are you really saying something there, or do you 'dispise' yourself?
in my opinion too much pedal at the start, but otherwise a very musical performance overall compared to Glenn Gould.
stop interpreting the baroque through the lens of the Romantic
Check his 1948 Moscow recording...
He is good but.... to much ffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
Nice progressiv intepretation with a touch of Stalinism.

Its the same for me. Sinful, cruel, crazy world. And wonderful music for those, who need it. Century by century.
The picrure is Moscow, of course )
Artois 54
Pogorelich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
