  • How to adjust the clutch cable properly is one of the most-asked questions we get here at Earth Tools, and since none of the tractor manufacturers have come up with a comprehensive document for this procedure, here it is. Narrated by Earth Tools owner Joel Dufour.
*NOTE: this video does NOT apply to BCS "PowerSafe" clutches OR Grillo "Active" clutches. Those clutch types have their own specific videos.*

Joel , as you told me over the phone:
1)THE handle bars MUST be on the ENGINE side ( you go over this at 7:48- 9:50 in the video but it is SO IMPORATNT that it should be made very clear at the very start because you cant do the adjustment loose enough unless the handle bars are on the ENGINE side )
    2) if tightening lower cable clamp tension the upper tension adjustment thread must be 1/3 - 1/2 showing BEFORE pulling the lower cable tight .

Super helpful. I needed to adjust my cable after replacing my clutch as the machine wasn't stopping moving forward when I disengaged the clutch handle, and this seems like just the advice I needed. Thanks!

Thank you! I developed the need for this adjustment after about 10 hours of usage on a new machine. This was helpful.

Might the need for this adjustment also contribute to the clutch being frozen in the off-season? I had the clutch dis-engaged last off-season, but noticed that it was frozen a bit when I started using it this year. After some initial use, it broke free. But... I still notice that the gear will still be engaged ever so slightly sometimes even when I have the clutch completely open.

Nice tutorial. Am looking for direction in freeing up a stuck clutch on a 710 I bought used. Any do-it-yourself advice?

I have adjusted the clutch according to the video above. I tried turning the adjustment all the way in and all the way out. At this point the nipple or nut that sits in the handle is all afloat. I have adjusted the total cable under the battery case both by lengthening cable and by shortening the cable. No matter what I have tried, once the machine is in gear, it moves regardless of the clutch position. Any theories?

We mention in the video that if adjusting the cable does not make it "stop", your clutch needs new bearings... we offer a rebuilding service for the BCS clutches. 502-484-3988
