  • Welcome To The Bench Jewelers Work Shop: Today's video is troubleshooting the grandfather's clock chime barrow. When Cleaning your clock be sure to oil the slider chime adjuster. On the Chime barrow, your will see several moving parts which I show in this video to make sure everything is sliding freely and that the right amount of oil is used. Thanks For Watching.

    You have created the perfect video to motivate me to finally doing some maintenance on the Grandfather Clock I purchased new in 1981. There has been no maintenance performed on the clock. The chimes stopped working reliably several decades ago. The clock still tells time perfectly with slight adjustments to the pendulum arm length. I have opened up the side access panels to the clock where I can easily access the clock workings and after viewing this video, I now have a clear understanding which gears and levers operate the chime cam and chimes. Thank you for the clear picture and narrative of their operation, cleaning, and lubrication requirements. I purchased the Red Dragon Clock Oil Kit you reference and look forward to learning how to care for this clock and to placing it back into full-operating condition. Thank you!!!

    I would like to thank you immensely on these videos. I recently bought 2 not working Grandfather clocks & with your guidance via TH-cam video, have repaired & oiled both using the clock oiling kit I purchased from you. Your videos are invaluable & are extremely helpful for someone like me. My next endeavor is my Black Forest Cuckoo clock which needs oiling & has an issue with the music box that I suspect is actually a chain issue. Chains are corroded.Thank You again.

    I just bought a Ridgeway Grand Father clock at an estate sale. It was less then a hundred dollars because it doesn't chime, the front door lock didn't work, painters tape to close it and a tag that said "as-is". I replaced the lock from a clock site but the clock would run for awhile then stop. I levelled it and it runs great but won't chime. Your video was a big help understanding what to look for. When I'm over the flu, I'll see about the clock. Thanks for the info.

    I have a Howard Miller model 610-406. I have oiled it and made certain the chime barrel slides from silent to all three chime selections. It still will not chime unless I gingerly flick the flywheel to help it along. It does not appear that the cables are wound incorrectly.

    I have a 2017 Kieninger KSU78 cable-driven triple chime replacement movement in a Trend grandfather clock that runs extremely well EXCEPT the chime train recently started running without stopping (until the cable runs out). The clock repairer I used to use has retired, so I am on my own. Is this likely a lubrication issue or something more severe? If lubrication, is it something I can address without removing the movement from the case?

I have a kieninger modle k triple chime grandfather clock, when i got it, the plastic switching lever was broken so i ordered a new one, problem is i had to unscrew the lever to put the new piece in, and now its not set at the exact perfect depth to follow the chime, like when i have it on silent, it will chime, ill adjust it just a tad, and it is silent but then it's also silent for the next chime. Errrrggg very frustrating trying to get it perfectly aligned, gave up for now until I'm less frustrated lol

      Look at the barrows to see if the cables are not wound over the top of the barrow wheel. The clock may not chime or strike if it's looped over the top. Most times you can use a flashlight to check the cables on all three barrows. Also, check the chime barrow to make sure it's free and not stuck on one of the hammers. Set to Westminster and check by advancing the minute hand to the closes 1/4 hour. Open the cabinet door and with a cotton glove on place, your hand on the top of the chime weight put a bit of pressure on the weight, and advance the minute hand to the next 1/4 hour to see if it starts chiming. If the cable is looped you may have to repeat it several times. Hope this helps The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.

    I have a Danekar Grandfather clock. This clock has always been 2 hrs. slow it's whole life. Raising or lowering the pendulum does not fix this. Beside this issue, the chimes stopped working. I have moved a lever a while back which has caused this. Now placing the lever in it's original state, it still does not chime. Maybe the whole chiming mechanism is stuck? I will check to see that it springs back and forth in the 12 o clock position as you suggest.

    I bought a Howard Miller Bartow Grand Father Clock in an auction about 5 or 6 years ago. I had it serviced and it worked flawlessly. All of a sudden the hour chimes would be off sync. One o'clock would chime 2 or 3 times, 12 o'clock it would chime as many as 14or 15 times. I cleaned and oiled it and it keeps good time but the chime go out of sync periodically. According to the paper work it was bought by the original owner in 1972. The numbers on the back of the works says: Howard Miller No.8197. The model number of the clock is 860. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tim

    Hi Vince, thanks for this video. I’ve just inherited a grandfather clock with Westminster chimes. It runs perfectly, but I believe the hour chime is too high pitched. • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is not much you can do with the high-pitched sound. The grandfather clocks come with pre-tuned chimes and strike rods. It's possible to soften the sound by bending the hammers back from the chime board rods. The Bench Jeweler.

    Hi RJGold
    I bought your clock kit and cleaned and oiled my Jauch model 77 clockworks.
    I had to adjust the bridge to align the escapement mechanism. The clock then ran timing wise.
    Having issues with the strike mechanism for the westminister tunes, seems the weight does not have the power to
    Finish the chiming. Also,now the pendulum will only stay active for 45 minutes. Is it possible the chime function is stopping the pendulum
    Functioning? Thanks

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  ปีที่แล้ว

      The pendulum's timing side runs independently of the chime and strike. My best guess is the pendulum beat is off just enough to cause it to stop after a short time running. Try getting it to have a very even tick-tock. I have a video on just that problem? Your clock movement Jauch is super old and if the chime stops I'm making a guess there is a bad pivot bushing causing the problem. It's not an easy fix. The Bench Jeweler.

    I have a grandfather clock that chimes on every quarter and no problem. However, it is not striking on the hour. The gear attached to the star wheel is not moving. How should I address this?

  • @sand0077
    @sand0077 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very informative. I'm working on a Hermle 1161 853HS 94cm that has an issue with the verge not freely advancing the escape wheel. I installed a new verge but the problem remains. Removing the verge from the movement, the gears move freely as they should. This occurred after the cable for the time function broke causing the weight to drop at a fast rate damaging the bottom of the clock case. I'm suspecting with the gear train working at such a fast rate some damage to the gears may have happened. The movement is completely disassembled for inspection but I'm not seeing anything obviously wrong with the gear teeth, pivots or bushings. While it's apart it would be a good opportunity to clean and oil the mechanism but the issue is with the verge and escape wheel is still of concern. Any thoughts on what may be going on is appreciated! 😊

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 1161 has and auto beat verge, meaning when you let the pendulum swing it sets the beat and at that point the escapement should start advancing.
      It would help if you could do a video of the pendulum and escapement moving. Mike E

    I don't know if my question relates to your video, but I have a Jauch wall clock that plays Westminster and Ave Maria de Lordes chimes (it's my second one but with different chime rods). I discovered that even though the Westminster chime played correctly, the Ave Maria chime was off. Then I was told that it could've had a defect when it was first manufactured in 1982 because the pegs are non-adjustable, but I think the melody wheel only needs to be adjusted to the correct position for both melodies to work, even though I haven't had as much experience with repairing clocks. Is it possible to manually turn the melody wheel with the hammers raised using trial and error? Thank you in advance.

      If the clock plays two tunes then there will be a lever located somewhere on the front dial moving the music lever changes the music barrow position so that it can play a second tune. If the barrow is stationare and there is no lever on the dial it only plays one tune. Let me know if this helps. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it won't help to clean and oil as it sounds like you have a bearing out of round. This will cause the chimes to stick as they try to work the action. The fix for this is to re-bush the clock movement. And polishing the pivots. It requires a gifted clock repairman to restore the movement You can figure about 450.00 dollars depending on your location. You can check this problem by removing the chime weight and pushing the chain drive wheel back and forth or the next gear up with your finger and watching for the upper gears to bounce up and down if you see movement then the bushing will need to be replaced. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.

    Have watched several videos including cleaning and chime troubleshooting. They are excellent. I’m having. A problem with the hammers getting stuck. I have a Hermle 1161-853BS. It strikes every quarter hour and every time there are 1 or 2 hammers that don’t finish striking. If I just touch the barrel, the hammer releases & strikes. Is there a way to fix this?

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what's happening is your barrel Is slightly out of time. On the back side of the movement is a drive gear attached to the barrel. Facing the back of the movement it's at the top left. This gear will have a screw to hold the gear in place it needs to be moved forward to the left about 1/10,000 of an inch to drop the hammers. It works best if you run the chime till it stops and the hammer or hammers that have not dropped are when you advance that gear just a tiny tiny bit to let the hammers drop. It's not hard but I warn you it can get you into a lot of trouble if you advance the gear too far. Mike E The Bench Jeweler.

      First off be super careful touching the butterfly wheels the shaft on which they ride can bend really easily!!! You will have to use the odorless mineral spirits you can buy a quart can for a few dollars. Using the wooden cotton tips don't use regular cotton swabs they won't work. Clean easy pivot sinks free from dirt and grease as my video shows. Use high-grade clock oil we have it on our website. and oil the movement as shown in our videos. www.mybenchjeweler.com/product/red-dragon-clock-oil-kit

My though was, that it needs oiling but I heard from others that I should use Graphite instead of oil. Just curious your thoughts on that? Also, do you think a clock can be oiled while its still in place or does it need to have the movement removed to do so?

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't use graphite you need to use clock oil. For some clocks, you can remove the dial and the back of the case can be opened this type of clock can be cleaned and oiled without taking the movement out. If you can't get to the front of the movement then it needs to be removed from the case. The Bench Jeweler.

      In general, if the weights are wound up it's not overwound. The Clock case model number does not tell me much. It's the movement number on the back side of the clock movement that's needed. If it's a cable wound clock or chain wound clock is needed. Does it have a shut-off lever, or does it play more than one tune if so try putting very gentle pressure on the weight while moving the minute hand to a chime position and see if it starts chiming? I have seen the chime trip lever stuck before and all it may need is a little help. The Bench Jeweler.

    I’ve recently begun making payments for purchasing a Howard Miller New Yorker (610-160) grandfather clock, which didn’t work for more than a couple hours before with no chimes. Yesterday, I oiled it on the pivots on the back side and some front side ones that I could reach without removing the face plate, but then I realized that the clock does not click or trigger the chimes at all on the quarters. I only hear the warning clicks. It now keeps time and chimes when I hit the chime lever, albeit very slowly, but not at all on its own. The hour chime doesn’t trigger the strike afterwards either. Any suggestions?

      @rhjgold  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is this a new clock that you purchased or an older clock? Ok, If it's an older clock can't oil just the back and hope for the best on the rest of the clock's moving parts! Every pivot must be cleaned and oiled. If you watch our videos you can decide if cleaning and oiling the clock is right for you. Tips Don't use 3&1 oils sewing machine oil or other such types of oils. You can buy clock oil made to do the job from our website or a clock cleaning kit. If the chimes are running very slow the oil is dried up and the whole clock needs to be cleaned. If the chime lever drops most of the time if it won't chime the strike won't work either. All the timing levers and cams have to be running in sequence. www.mybenchjeweler.com/product/red-dragon-clock-oils

      Facing the clock the far right weight runs the chime and the far left weight runs the strike as a rule the chime must release the 4-count cam in order for the strike to operate. Which may be the reason both weights are stuck. Something is jammed on the chime side. if your clock has a lever on the right side it's to change the music tune try moving the switch up and down the chime music barrow may be jammed. First thing to try. Thanks Mike E. The Bench Jeweler.

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The best time to move the chime tune lever is at 12 o'clock and after it has stopped chiming. There is less chance of jamming the chime barrow. If your clock has side panels, you can check the chime barrow on the right side at the upper top on the back of the movement. Move the minute hand to the 12 o'clock check to see if the barrow will move back and forth freely if it's stuck it might take a tiny bit of friction with your finger to move it by wiggling the chime barrow, which should free the barrow and let the chimes play again. This will let both the chime and strike weights start dropping down.
      Thanks The Bench Jeweler.

The far-right weight is the chiming weight and the clock is probably out of time so the shutdown pin or warning pin is not latching. Both are beyond owner repair. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.

I cleaned and oiled it and installed it back into it's place. It seems to be working well but I can't get the chime correct. It will not chime or strike right. It will not chime the quarter, half or three quarter time. It will chime on the hour and strike the hour and sometimes chime the quarter hour chime on the hour but doesn't strike! Help! It runs a little slow and the weights do not fall equally. The center weight falls faster than the right and left. My weights are marked, so I know they are in the correct position. My clock was purchased in Dec. 1987. It is a Seth Thomas three chime. The movement is a German A451-002. I stopped the movement several years ago in order to preserve it until I could find someone to clean and oil it. I think at the time it was around 29 years old. I am wondering if this is a hopeless case. Update! I have been listening carefully to my clock and have figured out what is happening. It is playing the full chime on the hour and striking the hour. It is going forward one full hour and chiming the quarter hour chime on the next hour but not striking the hour. it is repeating this process with going forward one hour and chiming the half hour chime but again not striking the hour. From there it is again going forward another hour and playing the three quarter chime but not striking the hour. It goes forward another hour and plays the full chime and strikes the hour. It is correct on the hour strike but just a few minutes slow. Make sense?

      I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what's going on. So you need to do a couple of things for me. One to speed up the clock there is a screw on the bottom of the pendulum screwing the pendulum up will speed the clock up. On most of the pendulum's turning the bottom screw to the right will speed up just turn the screw a half turn at a time then observe if the time speeds up.
      Chimes, a 451 movement sounds like its a Hermle German movement however that type of movement only plays the Westminster Chime so can you take a picture of the back side of the movement for me and also what chime tunes does it play Westminster, St Michaels, and the Whittington would be the three common chime tunes if it has three different chimes it plays. On the front of the dial should be a lever that changes the chime tunes. Let me know. The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.

      When i hook up all the weights, the chime are going constantly, but when I take out the heaviest weight that's on the right , the chimes stops and the clock is at a stand still.

    We have a 1980 Howard Miller grandfather clock. For the past month the minute hand will not go past the numeral 2 and also numeral 8....so aggravating. This has happened in the past and we just moved the minute hand backwards a tiny bit, and then it would go forward correctly and not happen again for a few years....and the "fix" always worked. Just recently tho we do the same, but it will stop later when it gets to numeral 8 or again to numeral 2 spot. We had it cleaned ,etc maybe 5 yrs ago. Anyone had this happen? It is in a very prominent/convenient spot and do depend on it for a quick glance of time all during the day...did not realize how often I glance at it for the time!!

      In the movement on the chime side, I'm guessing the warring pin is sticking stopping the minute hand, not doing it all the time is a clue? There is no easy fix that I can help you with. The bench jeweler

      @@rhjgold Thank you for the reply. The guy who cleaned it for me had to work on it some several years ago, because it fell ...on me!! Ha, just fell forward a couple feet ( was trying to put Christmas garland on top of it), but I caught it...weights hit the glass hard but did not break. Has worked perfectly since, except for a few times it did this and just pushing the minute hand backwards a little and then would go forward without feeling like it locked up and it would work again .Not now tho, so I will call him. Was hoping a simple fix, but we just cannot get it going. I do love this clock so got to be fixed!! I was 30 when i got it...now 72 !!!

    How do you adjust the speed on a mantel clock,
    I need to slow the clock down.
    It is gaining about Two minutes an hour.

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's Quite a bit for a mantel clock to gain. If it's a weigh clock open the back door and lower the weight down I would start with three, or for turns, and see how much it gains in 24 hours. repeat if necessary. I need to know if your clock has a pendulum and wight. The Bench Jeweler.

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your mantel clock has a pendulum and weight on the bottom of the weight there is a little nut or screw bob letting the weight move up or down. moving the weight down slows the clock. On some older mantel clocks at the top of the dial is a tiny hole and arrows using your clock key which should have a bottom for winding the clock and on the top, a small stem that lets you insert it in the top of the dial then turn either right or left will speed up or slow down the clock. There should be a dial on the pendulum to screw something out (longer) or in (shorter)

      The front dial will need to be removed. Facing the clock on the left side is what we call the rack, which looks like a set of stairs there is a cam with a pin that lifts the rack up and shuts the chime off either the cam pin is broken or the rack needs to be adjusted.

      @@rhjgold cable. It’s a Howard miller, 62nd anniversary edition, cable, seven or eight day w/ moon dial cherry case. my dad bought it in 1988. I ended up putting it back together and now the hour hand is super loose. I just can’t see paying all that money and having it moved to a repair shop. I didn’t do enough to break a pin although it’s not impossible. I’m pretty sure when my pinky finger hit that rack something happened. I barely touched it but I did hear the noise when I touched it it actually chimes twice and it has an extra note each time sometimes five minutes before the chimes start on the hour Driving me insane. It refuses to chime on the quarter hour half hour and 3/4 hour.
      Too bad you’re not here in Michigan. at least I don’t think you are.
