    My grandfather just kept having issues even after the fix. I finally replaced both hands with new hands and it is working again. The only problem is the chiming is off by five minutes but I had shoulder surgery and taking the minute hand off and putting it in the correct position is just too difficult when I am down to my non dominate hand. I will get it right eventually doing the procedure you showed me.

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm only guessing but the far left weight as you face the clock is the striking chime weight and sounds like the ratch gear either has a broken spring or a damaged gear letting the weight fall to the ground. The far-right weight is the chiming weight and the clock is probably out of time so the shutdown pin or warning pin is not latching. Both are beyond owner repair. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.

      Chimes seem to be the biggest problem to get fixed. If the chimes don't work then the strike won't work either one comments on the other. Sometimes it's simply because the oil on the chime side has dried up and needs cleaning and reoiled. We provide a great clock oil kit that may fix the problem ad www.mybenchjeweler.com Thanks The Bench Jeweler Mike E;

    Wiping the pivots/bushings really isn't cleaning the bearing surfaces. It would be much better just to soak the entire movement in Mineral Spirits for a couple hours, then wash the entire movement in hot running water. Let the movement completely dry over night before before oiling. (if you have an ultrasonic cleaner put the clock movement in that after soaking in Mineral Spirits.)

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry, that's a bad idea!

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't Have time to respond to Keth's cleaning technique, please don't follow his example. Home cleaning can be done the way I show you and it works well. Yes, you can use mineral spirits I recommend it. Soak your cleaning swab in the spirits and with a circular motion clean the pivot and bushing the mineral spirits will dry almost instantly. Then use our oil kits and oil each pivot. Note: Mineral Spirits is a solvent used for many things thining lacquers and paints etc. Leaving your clock in a tub full of Mineral Spirits for several hours will destroy the protective lacquer coating on your brass gears and brass plates on your clock movement and you will end up with a mess that is not fixable. Rinsing with water and leaving it to dry overnight will produce rust on the steel gear shafts and pivots again not an easy fix. Thanks The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.

    I have a Seth Thomas grandmother clock. I can't get the right or left weights to move. The center one does and it keeps appropriate time. Hey I’m not sure if you’re still doing clock stuff, but my grandfather clock chime melody was off for a while because it confused my grandmother with her phone ring. I have turned it back on with the lever that drops the hammers back into position to ring. The problem I’m having is that the melody is chiming very slow. Could you advise?

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold หลายเดือนก่อน

      Make sure the heavy weight is on the far right side. Of the three weights, one will be the heaviest. If it's running slow either you have a bushing going bad or the movement needs to be cleaned and oiled. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.

      You can use odor-free mineral spirits which should help remove dirt and dust from the movement front and black plates. You should use clock Oil to re-oil the movement. All 4 of my strike hammers bounce a bit when they strike the hourly chimes. It causes it to sound like a double chime for every strike. I would think bending the hammers back a bit may help but I don't want to mess with them if that's not the fix. Any suggestions?

      Use your thumb and first finger thumb in the middle of the hammer rod and the finger on the top of the hammer gently bend back just a tiny bit then pull the hammer back about a 1" and check to see if it's double hitting repeat till it only hits once. Thanks Mike E. The Bench Jeweler

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you're not the first one that said that. Remember it's held in by a collet and against the headstock, not the bearings. Looked like I was really hitting it hard but it was just a tapping. The lathe in question is one of 4 lathes that I own the lathe has no tailstock and I'm guessing over a hundred years old. It Might have been better if I had pulled the gear shaft and used a jeweler block If I ever redo the video I will do just that. Thanks for watching Mike E The Bench Jeweler.

    I have a 2017 Kieninger KSU78 cable-driven triple chime replacement movement in a Trend grandfather clock that runs extremely well EXCEPT the chime train recently started running without stopping (until the cable runs out). The clock repairer I used to use has retired, so I am on my own. Is this likely a lubrication issue or something more severe? If lubrication, is it something I can address without removing the movement from the case?

    I’ve recently begun making payments for purchasing a Howard Miller New Yorker (610-160) grandfather clock, which didn’t work for more than a couple hours before with no chimes. Yesterday, I oiled it on the pivots on the back side and some front side ones that I could reach without removing the face plate, but then I realized that the clock does not click or trigger the chimes at all on the quarters. I only hear the warning clicks. It now keeps time and chimes when I hit the chime lever, albeit very slowly, but not at all on its own. The hour chime doesn’t trigger the strike afterwards either. Any suggestions?

    • @rhjgold
      @rhjgold 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is this a new clock that you purchased or an older clock? Ok, If it's an older clock can't oil just the back and hope for the best on the rest of the clock's moving parts! Every pivot must be cleaned and oiled. If you watch our videos you can decide if cleaning and oiling the clock is right for you. Tips Don't use 3&1 oils sewing machine oil or other such types of oils. You can buy clock oil made to do the job from our website or a clock cleaning kit. If the chimes are running very slow the oil is dried up and the whole clock needs to be cleaned. If the chime lever drops most of the time if it won't chime the strike won't work either. All the timing levers and cams have to be running in sequence. www.mybenchjeweler.com/product/red-dragon-clock-oils Thanks Mike E. The Bench Jeweler

      The minute hand when removed from the clock on the back side is a nut-like bushing you can use flat pliers and grab the bushing holding the minute hand and turn the hand in the direction you need 10 minutes won't take much and that will put the chimes back on the right time. I bought a Howard Miller Bartow Grand Father Clock in an auction about 5 or 6 years ago. I had it serviced and it worked flawlessly. All of a sudden the hour chimes would be off sync. One o'clock would chime 2 or 3 times, 12 o'clock it would chime as many as 14or 15 times. I cleaned and oiled it and it keeps good time but the chime go out of sync periodically. According to the paper work it was bought by the original owner in 1972. The numbers on the back of the works says: Howard Miller No.8197. The model number of the clock is 860. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tim

    I have a Hermle Grandfather clock with Westminister chime - Hermle 461053 H K 23. For a long time it was working well, but then the chiming stopped. I discovered that the chiming drum was turning, but it moved sligtly to the right and didn't catch the hammers. So I put a small spacer in on the right hand side of the chiming drum and then it stayed in position and I could hear the chiming. In the proses I did something, (can't figure out what) and now I sit with a problem: It doesn't chime at the 1/4 or the half or the 3/4, but when the minute hand gets to the hour it chimes the 4 notes, the 8 notes, the 12 notes and the16 notes without stopping in between and it will strike once with the 12 notes and then once with the 16 notes and then it stops.The same thing happens on every hour. I've spent hours trying to fix it and I watched all your videos, but nothing changed. Do you have some advice for me please?

      When you look at the front of the dial, on the right side of the dial is there a slot and words showing the different tunes? Mike E The Bench Jeweler

    Thanks try to find a video like this for a while. I think my main spring is stuck made it to from a dowel and using the clock key for a letdown tool clock will run for about two hours then stop but when the main spring is loose, it will run till it needs to be wound, and the problem starts all over again

      There can be several problems. The best guess is that when you wind the mainspring full it puts enough pressure on the power wheel and train gears that one of the pivot bushing is bad causing the clock to stop running. If your mainsprings are in the open you can let them down use a rag with some 3&1 oil and start at the base of the spring and wipe the spring clean re-oiling them may help. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.

    I’ve been oiling my grandfather clock with WD-40 since 1968 because I didn’t know any better. Any suggestions for cleaning the mechanism?

      It's not the best idea WD-40. I use odorless mineral spirits and pointed tight wound cleaning tips to clean all the pivots and oil sinks. A high grade of clock oil. www.mybenchjeweler.com Mike E The Bench Jeweler.

    Many thanks for your videos and the oiling kit! I have a Howard Miller model 610-406. I have oiled it and made certain the chime barrel slides from silent to all three chime selections. It still will not chime unless I gingerly flick the flywheel to help it along. It does not appear that the cables are wound incorrectly. Any thoughts?

    Oh my god my dad, preached till he was blue in the face 🙂about not touching the dial with your hands! Nobody ever touch the clock until he passed, and then I got it. Every time he would mind it, every time he would do anything he would verbally instruct me lol. He will instruct anybody who was in the room why he was doing what he was doing and what not to do what you shouldn’t do.
