Great informative video. Thanks for posting.
Why in the hell do the clock makers use brass if it's so easy to damage? I know it's a soft metal but that's ridiculous to have to be so gentle with these clocks you would think they would have sealed bearings in them as much as a good grangfather clock cost.
There is a whole book on this subject, I can offer a few notes to give you an answer. Workability: Brass is softer and easier to machine, cut, and shape compared to harder metals like steel. Wear Resistance and Longevity: Brass wears well over time, especially in the low-speed movements Corrosion Resistance: Brass is resistant to corrosion and tarnishing, which helps the gears and components last longer Low Friction: Brass creates less friction when in contact with other materials Aesthetics: Brass has a traditional, warm appearance. The Bench Jeweler.
I also just started following you:)
Thanks for looking Rose. The Bench jeweler
Barrels are actually threaded to make the cable lay side-by-side as it winds up look like groves but they’re actually threads
6:25 I have no qualms deleting unconstructive comments on my videos, yet I welcome constructive criticism. Thanks for the video.
Nice shot of the back of your knuckles not what you were talking about
Mine chimes the wrong time. When it’s 2 o clock it chimes 11 o clock
If this a grandfather clock all you need to do is move the minute hand through the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and on the hour count the strikes say 3 o'clock you can move the hour hand to three it's on a friction busing and can be moved to what every time you need. The Bench Jeweler
My clock stopped chiming is there a shut off on a tempos fugit
If there is a lever protruding through the front of the dial, that would be either a shutoff or a music tune changer
Beautiful clocks. Thank you for sharing your information.
Love what you do 👍🏻
I see this was three years ago, but I'm going to give it a try since I'm here. My grandfather clock plays the music on the hour but doesn't chime the time after, what could be wrong?
There are two levers on the front of the movement as the chime plays the tune the cam goes around and lifts a long arm lever which trips the striking cam and the rack which gives the time by striking the tune bar. Sometimes if the minute hand is turned backward it can jam the rack which looks like a bunch of stairs or pointed teeth. you need to check the rack first to see if its free moving. The Bench Jeweler
can u help me ----- the middle weight fall normally, but the two side weights do not they lag behind and i know it is not right how can i fix this please let me know it is a ridgeway grandfather clock thanks
The first thing to check is the last time the clock was serviced if ever. Depending on the age it may need cleaning and oiling of the movement, most times this does the trick. The Bench Jeweler.
@@rhjgold i had the clock oiled about six months ago, what else can i check
I was given a grandfather clock It has a. S HERMLE 451-050 94 CM 66 Movement The clock keeps time but the chime does not work. Any help would be appreciated Thank you
I have a Ridgeway grandfather clock. It has a Hermel works 451-033. It is chain driven with 3 chains. When looking at the front of the clock the right chain moves freely in both directions. Can you tell me what needs to be done to fix it. I have reached out to a few places in the area and everyone says the works need to be replaced.
When I move the pendulum to start my grandfather clock it only runs for 15 minutes then stops. Is there a easy way to tell whats wrong wit it?
Is this a cable clock or a chain clock if it's a cable clock move the pendulum all the way to one side and let it swing free. This sets the beat and the clock should run without stopping. This won't work on most chain wound clocks. The Bench jeweler
My hands were ran forward without letting it chime. Now no chiming at all. 😢
My Howard Martin grandfather clock keeps perfect time, chimes perfectly. I have it striking at 6 o clock perfectly, than at 7 it strikes 5, at 8 it strikes 4 something is causing the strike to count down instead of up. I have just finished cleaning and oiling it, is there something I set wrong putting it back together?
Hi, I have an inherited grandfather clock, Ridgeway from the 60’s?? I think that the fly of chime mechanism is getting stuck, which won’t let the minute hand move and ultimately the clock stops. Is that possible?
That would not likely cause the time to stop. The chime on some clocks can be shut off. If you have a lever on the front dial for chimes shut it off and check to see if the time keeps running. As a rule, the chimes will not cause a problem with the time gears. The Bench Jeweler
@@rhjgold thanks for your reply. This clock is maybe older even, it doesn’t have any shut offs for chiming. Well, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t. I did have it fully gone over by a professional, have had it home a few months now. Still getting stuck and stopping some. I’ll keep observing it to try and figure out what’s the problem. I checked chime chain and doesn’t seem it’s hung up in anyway.
I will say pretty much every time it is stopped, I try to move the minute hand and it is resistant. So I don’t force it, I open the back see that the little fly wheel is standing up, I give it a slight push and it will whir around, then the minute hand will move again and I can start the clock.
I just got a ridgeway grandfather clock, it keeps good time, but the chimes, will not work, when it gets to the hour I see a little flap move,or fall,to start the process, but nothing happens, I have used can air to blow the mechanics, I have not oiled it yet, I have some synthetic oil coming tomorrow today is july25th 2024.
Thanks so much for the videos and information. I now understand why my Grandfather never let my mum near his 1890’s Hermle wall clock which I inherited many years ago. Although he showed me how to clean and oil it, he wasn’t an expert, as he over oiled it being mostly blind. Also just inherited two Grandmother clocks (1920’s & 1987) so good to know about different greases. Might just invest in an oiler too rather than using my Grandmothers old long hat pin !!! 🤣 Brilliant and useful information, so thank you again. ❤
Hi. I just picked up an old grandfather clock and it is Chiming short .10.11.12. Eight times, the rest of Chiming are ok. Please tell me what is wrong with it?
It has to do with the rack behind the dial for some reason it's not dropping all the way down at the 10 11 and 12. I think I need to make a quick video on the chime levers. The Bench Jeweler
thanks for the videos. I purchased a lovely Howard Miller floor clock Urban 610866 from a private seller. She has taken very good care of it however I think she needs clean up and oil as I am hearing a little screeting sound when she chimes. My local clock place would like $225 for a house visit. I watched a video showing how to do the cleaning and oil with out taking out the mechanism. Then I found your videos, so helpful. I can access the mechanism on each side of the clock as there are removable glass panes. Your cleaning kit seems to be just what I need. Do you agree with my working with her without removing the mechanism entirely and doing my best from each side?
The clock number you gave me is for the case. To find the movement number, look on the lower right side on the back of the clock movement as you face the back of the case. If your clock has side panels, you should be able to locate it through one of them. To clean and oil the front pivot wells, you need to remove the front clock dial. While the back side of the clock movement can also be cleaned and oiled, this can be very difficult. On many clocks, you can remove the back case panel to expose the back of the movement, making this task a bit easier. Remember to handle each part with care and ensure you have the proper tools to avoid damaging any components. The Bench Jeweler
What if it misses the 12th chime? Just bought a '83 Tempus Fugit Pearl, and it strikes only 11 chimes on the 12th hours. All else is working perfectly well.
My best guess is the rack is not dropping down far enough to count the 12th tooth on the strike the cam pin may be hanging up or an adjustment is needed to let the rack drop all the way down on the center hour wheel. The Bench Jeweler
I bought a grandfather clock franz hermle 451-050 H off of someone an the chimes arent working! I was wondering if you could help? It actually has a couple parts that was in a bag! I dont know if it is extra or if needed
Most problems deal with the chimes if they are really dirty and have not been cleaned and oiled for a long time this may be the problem.
Hello I have a howard miller grandfather clock with movement# 1161 and it only gongs once when it hits the hour so for 8am it only goes once should it gong 8 times ?
Yes, each hour should strike the time. Somewhere the strike levers are not functioning correctly. The Bench Jeweler.
wow ... the strikers are all twisted like a typewriter...
The hammers should all be in a roll and set about 1/4 inch from the chime bar. If you have a cable clock use a tall plastic cup type you buy form the store and wind the clock up with the cup inside the cable and pully keeps the cables from twisting up on the winding wheel The bench Jeweler.
No mention of where the cable pulleys should be when removing the works?... should they be wound up?... or hanging loose? because all I see is cables tangling all over his bench....
HI Mike My name is Marcus and I would like to know how much your clock kit costs
The kits run $35.95 plus shipping you can see the kit on my website see the following: www.mybenchjeweler.com/product/red-dragon-clock-oil-kit Thanks The Bench Jeweler
Thanks so much for your videos. I recently bought three Howard Miller clocks (all non-working). I have two of them working but the second one will not chime. My question is on Chime Rods. Can you change them and do they have a musical note stamped on them? I have had to make some modifications as I take some parts from one of the clocks and use it on the other. One last question. Do you recommend cleaning the movement when you get these kinds of clocks? How would you recommend I clean it? Thanks
Good Explanation,would definitely recommend
Shouldn't a movement be disassembled entirely for a proper cleaning?
Watched your videos and thank you for the detail. I was a bit anxious to clean my Empire clock. I tried the process on an old ships clock 1st and it worked very well. I learned the process then applied to the Empire. The only additional step was to take the taper pins out to remove the mechanism. Thank you so much. By the way your cleaning kit was perfect, I’m surprised at how dirty the clocks were 😊
Thanks, for the info. The Taper pins are you referring to the dial held by the taper pins if so yes by all means pull the pins and remove the dial. The Bench Jeweler.
What is the difference between a CPD -5 and CPD-6 center finder?
The left weight does not fall. The clock does not strike. Is there a setting that needs to be adjusted?
The chime and strike are the biggest problems on clocks such as grandfather clocks. The chime at 12 o'clock is support to trip the strike or far left weight. It can be that the strike gears are out of sink you will need to remove the dial and trigger the minute hand to see what cam is not in sink. that's a good starting place. Thanks The Bench Jeweler
My clock is chime but no strick
Excellent explanation. Thanks for taking the time to produce good content.😀
You know, you could have redid the video with the camera in the correct position so one could actually see what you’re doing. This is totally lame. Embarrassing. 😮
Merhaba Türkiye'den selamlar. Üstadım dikiş makinaları için üretilen Singer makina yağını bu saatlerde kullanabilir miyiz?
No, too runny
My grandfather just kept having issues even after the fix. I finally replaced both hands with new hands and it is working again. The only problem is the chiming is off by five minutes but I had shoulder surgery and taking the minute hand off and putting it in the correct position is just too difficult when I am down to my non dominate hand. I will get it right eventually doing the procedure you showed me.
My grandfather clock dings at each hour but no melody like it used to how do I fix this?
My grandfather clock is Howard MILLER. The hour chime won’t stop and left weight falls quickly to the bottom. What is wrong and what do I need to do? Thanks for your help
I'm only guessing but the far left weight as you face the clock is the striking chime weight and sounds like the ratch gear either has a broken spring or a damaged gear letting the weight fall to the ground. The far-right weight is the chiming weight and the clock is probably out of time so the shutdown pin or warning pin is not latching. Both are beyond owner repair. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
My chimes fell off how do I put them back on .?
Why do I have to slightly tap the "butterfly wing" to start the clock to chime? If I just slightly tap or touch it, then the clock will chime properly. Thank you so much. Anxiously awaiting your reply.............
Chimes seem to be the biggest problem to get fixed. If the chimes don't work then the strike won't work either one comments on the other. Sometimes it's simply because the oil on the chime side has dried up and needs cleaning and reoiled. We provide a great clock oil kit that may fix the problem ad www.mybenchjeweler.com Thanks The Bench Jeweler Mike E;
Wiping the pivots/bushings really isn't cleaning the bearing surfaces. It would be much better just to soak the entire movement in Mineral Spirits for a couple hours, then wash the entire movement in hot running water. Let the movement completely dry over night before before oiling. (if you have an ultrasonic cleaner put the clock movement in that after soaking in Mineral Spirits.)
Sorry, that's a bad idea!
I didn't Have time to respond to Keth's cleaning technique, please don't follow his example. Home cleaning can be done the way I show you and it works well. Yes, you can use mineral spirits I recommend it. Soak your cleaning swab in the spirits and with a circular motion clean the pivot and bushing the mineral spirits will dry almost instantly. Then use our oil kits and oil each pivot. Note: Mineral Spirits is a solvent used for many things thining lacquers and paints etc. Leaving your clock in a tub full of Mineral Spirits for several hours will destroy the protective lacquer coating on your brass gears and brass plates on your clock movement and you will end up with a mess that is not fixable. Rinsing with water and leaving it to dry overnight will produce rust on the steel gear shafts and pivots again not an easy fix. Thanks The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.
I have a Seth Thomas grandmother clock. I can't get the right or left weights to move. The center one does and it keeps appropriate time. The outer bars stopped working after my sister wound them . They were working before. Facing the clock the left bar is on my right and the right bar is on my left.
Hey I’m not sure if you’re still doing clock stuff, but my grandfather clock chime melody was off for a while because it confused my grandmother with her phone ring. I have turned it back on with the lever that drops the hammers back into position to ring. The problem I’m having is that the melody is chiming very slow. Could you advise?
Make sure the heavy weight is on the far right side. Of the three weights, one will be the heaviest. If it's running slow either you have a bushing going bad or the movement needs to be cleaned and oiled. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
Thanks for your intuitive instructions I will attempt to clean and oil my Howard Miller grandfather clock myself I have just ordered you kit to do this. One quick question it is okay to use compressed air or air in the can as it were, on the movement or at least the brass front and back plates.
I can't tell you how much Mike has helped me in fixing my grandfather clock. The strikes on the hours were not correct, some were and some were off. Mike walked me through the repair and now my clock is striking accurately, every hour. Thank you Mike.
Great video,great tools.Thank you,Mike.
