A Knott Pronto compensator can be a little daunting to fit as it arrives as a pack of parts to assemble.
From our experience this compensator is probably the best on the market. The design on the Knott pronto

Excellent information. If I had not watched this I would have used the inferior type you took off.

Flat spots on tyres are usually caused by the wheel locking up.
This can be caused by many things below are a few reasons.
Handbrake left on for long period of time:- When this happens it can cause the brake lining to stick to the drum when you go to move off one or more of the wheels may not rotate and it will cause a flat if dragged.
Sticking brakes:- if cables, Expanders or even parts of the coupling are sticking when the brake comes on this can cause the tyre to lock although it may only be temporary.
Linings come loose on a shoe:- if a lining come loose it can move and get caught on other parts of the brake causing the brake to lock.
Bearings:- a bearing can seize and lock the wheel up.
The problem may have been cured but it is still good to check the trailer over
I would recommend that the trailer is serviced / has a full inspection to find any problems as it could be a sign of problems that are coming.
I have just put a video on showing how to service brakes on a trailer
The trailer used in the video had Knott brakes and Knott KFG coupling the same as Ifor williams trailers manufactured after 1994.
However Ifor williams trailers manufactured after 1992 have sealed bearings this had taper bearings and ifor williams have leaf springs this had a normal torsion beam trailer axle.
We will soon be putting videos on about inspecting leaf springs and we have a video on changing sealed bearings. There will soon be a video about sealed bearings and tightening as the hub nuts need to be tightened tight (350Nm on Ifor williams) and the nuts need to be replaced when removing a drum.
Video about servicing a trailer can be found at

Great, thankyou for the response. I've been over all the braking systems changed shoes and cables. I regret not replacing the bearings! Anyone reading this whose overhauling the braking system... get the bearings replaced if you have the facilities! Thanks again for the information 🖒

Do you guys think the bradley couplings are better than the knott variety. 3.5tonne. Cheers
