Everytime I see your videos I think of you and where you live and how you fly and I also think of your daughter quite a bit when I hear the music I too have two daughters in their twenties and three sons in their 20s and I am now a grandfather for the third time so with that I also think of your daughter more and others I know that have lost loved ones keep building those airplanes and keep flying them and keep putting them to music I'm listening and I'm watching

@@willgraves5288 Hey Will. That's fine. But seriously, if there's something specific, I'm glad to present it here. I hope to do more tutorials on some of the fiddly bits as time allows...ie, the clay cockpit coaming, prop shaft bending, rubber braiding etc.

Thx, Noel. I'm glad I went with the new set of wings. Additionally, the under cambered were prone to warping, so it was a new ship each time out, or even from start of the trim session til the end. Oiy...

There's something timeless and otherworldly about your films. I can't work out whether it's rubber powered free-flight in general, your filmmaking or a combination of the two.

Thx Nate. Ironically, I tend to have bouts of vertigo in small aircraft, but perhaps my friends would be interested. Glad ur son is interested. Most kids are very curious when they see our birds fly. I'd suggest he look at my young friend Oliver's channel, who first came to Geneseo in 2014 at 12 yrs old, and now design his own models. Channel name is "sandfac".

Thx, but it wasn't so much courage, as frustration that was the motivator to swap out the wings. Three previous sessions with a squirrelly bird left me with the lone option of keeping her in the box, or giving her one last chance. It was worth the effort.
@@maxfliart I guess it's like the saying: gotta break some eggs to make an omelette. Probably a key difference between artists such as yourself and schlubs like me is the willingness to go the extra mile and the patience to never cut a corner.
Such patience! New wings and all. But it clearly paid off, as shown in the last trim flight we see here. Pure magic. 👍

What I'm using is old stock from the 1940s, and no longer available. But if you Google "four prong brass nailheads" you can find something similar. You will need to drill the hole for the prop shaft.

Hi Tom, could you do a video on how you print on tissue (things like that wood pattern)? That would be amazing!

Thx. I'm sure there are tutorials on the process. It's as simple as attaching the tissue to bond paper with a dusting of spray adhesive, then putting it thru the printer. I prefer old school, using the airbrush for the roundels, etc, but sometimes the printer is the best way.
Thanks, I'll try it in the future. Does it work with an inkjet printer (water schrinking, dope,...)? Everyone who I know uses this has a laser printer.
@@toonverbruggen7351 Yes, ironically, all of my friends use inkjet. The inks might be reactive to dope, but I dust the finished frame with Krylon, which does the job.

It's literally perfect.. 👌 Im guessing it flies as good as it looks? How many hours do you have into building it? I feel I spend way too much time on my builds, and my builds come out to be fairly average looking. Not near as perfect as this example
It's hard to say how many hours, but the build took roughly three months, with a few hours every other day or so as time allowed.
You know I've always found it such a shame to cover the structure when you're done... It is so beautiful.

Thx. It's "extruded polystyrene foam board", typically used for insulation. I've never bought it but had been given numerous scraps from friends. Perhaps ur local hardware store has scraps, or smaller sheets.

What tissue is suggested these days now that Japanese tissue is impossible to find? TIA!
Thx. U can find plenty of tissue at Easy Built or Volare. Their web addresses are listed above in the film description. I've even found some Hallmark brands that are fairly good. Not all of theirs is good for FF, but some. I've posted the link to the specific brand in the description of this FF Basics film on tissue: th-cam.com/video/A_Hap0gT9Pg/w-d-xo.html Like Japanese tish, it has a grain and is fairly light.

Where do you source your balsa?
Inspiring video as always. May I ask where you purchase your brass nose bottons?
Thx. The nose buttons I use are old stock from a 1940's hobby shop, but similar items can be found by searching for "four prong brass railheads". You would still need to drill the hole, but they appear similar, and come in various diameters.

Thanks for the great video; a pleasure to see it all come together. One question though; what is your process and what do you use for shrinking the tissue?
Thx. I attach the tissue with glue sticks and rubbing alcohol, then spray water as a light mist from an airbrush.

It's just scraps from the typical dense pink or blue foam u see for building construction.

Thx. Build time depends on the amount of free time for sure, but it appears this one took around two months.
