50 credits says the majority of the new ship designs the FO came up with were designed by members of the Old Guard because they learned the failings of their own ships and equipment the hard way. Also willing to bet the Old Guard was opposed to Starkiller base and instead wanted to use the resources put into that base into additional ships and infrastructure

The First Order has more concerns than just infighting, they can't destroy a single Mon Calamari cruiser, despite having a mega star destroyer supported by numerous capital ships and a fleet of fighters.
or just...you know...checking the the surroundings of said ships to see whether they are dispatching easily visible transport ships. Thank god they had a codebreaker from the jail cells of a backhand casino world to help them out...
Instead of firing at the resistance base they should’ve fired at the raddus first so the evacuating shuttles have no where to go

@OrangeManBad Well, old Empire was pretty clearly set up to be an analogy to Nazis visually and even has them blowing up planets, and was expanded further in the EU lore by making them racist against aliens too with a number of genocides and such. You're right though about how hamfisted the First Order is. It would be far more interesting to have them the underdogs as an even better analogy to Neo-Nazis if they really wanted to go with that. I will say though, Hux's speech when the New Republic gets wiped out is amazing.
@OrangeManBad I see some Japanese influence in the old Empire as well, particularly the caps that the officers wear and Darth Vader's Samurai-style mask.
I’m really happy to hear that the money is going to a good place. As a veteran myself, I know of many friends of mine who have struggled in the past or are currently struggling now to make ends meet. I think that this is a great program with excellent goals
I love how the end of the 8th movie everyone is treating the first order as this fearsome enemy, when they would be lagistically, economically, and militaristically broken and screwed from the events of movies 7 and 8
Don't worry, the new Star Wars doesn't rely on out-dated concepts like logic and rational storytelling.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the books if the movies treat the first order as a joke and no explanation in the movies why they have all the resources including a giant planet death star. I highly feel for the old guard and still hope they (together with Imperial Remnants in the Core Worlds etc and maybe the Chiss) will get rid of this rabid dogs like Hux and Kylo. Men like Pellaeon and Women like Sloane and allies like Thrawn represent the best of the Empire - with them a lasting Empire could be build. The New Republic and the new ranks of the FO are both similar incompetent.
I love the Empire for its cold ambition. They were focused and had clear goals. I also love the First Order for its inner struggle and the fact that it's so volatile that it could destroy itself from the inside out. Hux needs to prove himself a force to be reckoned with in episode 9, and I feel like he might just do that. He's probably sick of being thrown around and abused. The question is, will he ever be as great as Grand Admiral Thrawn...? Doubt it.

@@GenerationTech This is why I was so angry about his death after leaving cinema... Cap. Kennedy could have been made into a truly terrific character but was wasted for "story" purpose. Such a sad waste... Seeing him going down with his ship made him the most likeble charachter for me in the whole movie, dedicated to his belives to the end.

Well, perhaps I am playing the devil's advocate to much with Hux, but the guy isn't exactly someone who appear to give up easily. His Starkiller base was destroyed. He had a Dreadnought. The Dreadnought was destroyed, his fleet was equipped with hyperspace tracker system. Part of the fleet was destroyed and the enemy take refuge in a unbreakable base, he had a battering ram cannon. Even when Snoke take him down against the floor, the guy declined to submit his gaze, being totally secure of overcome his failure. Hux is a jackal, and a short-tempered psychopath. But also a persistent one, with a unique skill to survive to his own and others mess. While Kylo Ren is heading to his own destruction, I would be cautious to not understimate that Hux moron. He probably it's the most dangerous First Order's guy at this moment

The First Order's biggest internal struggle will be between Hux and Kylo Ren. While Kylo is nominally the new supreme leader, he will be challenged by Hux and the other officers. This creates a very dangerous schism for the First Order. While he was incredibly evil, Snoke was a unifying figure in the First Order. Snoke clearly possessed certain political skills that allowed him to lead the First Order effectively. Kylo Ren does not have any leadership skills, and he is incredibly impulsive, as seen at the end of The Last Jedi. Hux and the other First Order officers don't really respect Kylo, and they will probably try to assassinate Kylo as quickly as possible. This situation reminds me of South Vietnam after Diem's assassination. After Diem's death, the South Vietnamese government was never able to unify around another leader, and the government descended into political chaos with coups and counter-coups.

I agree with almost everything, but also think Armitage deserve some credit. Starkiller base was destroyed, yes. But it was by a impossible maneuver performed by Han Solo, Chewbacca and Finn, getting inside the orbital shield by jumping to hyperspace, and being incredibly lucky, by finding one of the few people with athority to disengage the shields. Plus, the base served its purpose, destroying the entire Hosninan Prime System and New Republic's army. Without Starkiller base, First Order would have had to face a neverending Clone Wars type conflict to take New Republic's capital. Having time to make a single shot, they perform a perfect blitzkrieg, leaving only some dozens of Leia ragtag rebels as opposition
And then he threw away his fancy dreadnought almost immediately after Starkiller's destruction.
I agree with Christopher. The first order does a blitzkrieg against a pacifist fleet and capital instead attacking the known threat then throwing away yet another powerful weapon that was destroyed by these meger few resistance then Holdo pulls an old classic move performed by the Japanese imperial fighters during ww2 by suicide rushing the enemy destroying half of the fleet and the largest capital ship ever built. Strategy is not in their skill set.
Daniel Shmitka They do better with theoretical strategies and with the development of an powerfull war machine, than in the field. Yes, they lose the Starkiller Base, and then the Dreadnought, the Supremacy and twenty capital ships more. But unlike the Empire and the Deathstar fiasco, the First Order was ready to go through with their lose, and keep going with the siege. If the Empire would have done the same thing, the Rebel Alliance wouldn't have survive Yavin 4. Sometimes you win by having better soldiers, sometimes you win by not doing the attack, until you know you have the biggest and more advanced army. Plus, New Republic is not "pacifist" like "vegan Hippies from the sixties pacifists", but like "NATO pacifists"
That doesn't excuse the idiotic tactics of Herr Starscream, if you know what I mean.
+Daniel Gavilán ok ok....not pacifist? They called for total disarmament of all warships. Self defense only kind of weapons. They didn't listen to Liea and no offense but even those who were in the empire like Captain Candy completely hates that his superior wouldn't send out fighters to destroy the resistance fighter or just plain out defend the dreadnaught. That's the problem with saying they are good at theoretical strategy is even in theory it's flawed because their loss is about 100,000 times more than the resistance not to mention no one take Kylo serious anymore. I do see your point though but even a half assed blitzkrieg would do more damage than what they did. They only killed the bombers and fighter craft of the resistance and one admiral. They failed to kill Leia (plot armor) and they failed to kill the resistance when they out gunned, out numbered and cornered them on Crait

I would argue JJ is too old guard hence the carbon copy that was force awkens and Rj is new guard which is why the last Jedi was all about his artistic view and not Star Wars
The First Order is a joke now that Kylo Ren is in charge. Rian Johnson justified killing off Snoke with the excuse that it was to allow Kylo to take center stage as the main villain. But, he never actually demonstrates that Kylo is *qualified* to be the main villain. He has no self-control, throws tantrums and makes strategically unsound decisions based on his emotions. Only the fact that the New Republic was also a joke built on Mon Mothma's nostalgia for the weak and ineffectual Republic of Chancellor Valorum opens even the possibility that the First Order can win now. If the heroes win, it is only because the villains are even more incompetent than they are!
Yea rian johnson doesn’t think about the trilogy he’s looking for things to work in his movie and the smoke thing was unexpected but really ties up the next director
Imagine Darth Plagueis is Snoke's master. That would turn some head, he successfully resurrected him self though Sith science.
They may have to actually play the Essence Transfer card. In the OT, you could imagine Darth Vader ruling the Empire as early as ANH. But we are two movies into the sequel trilogy and Kylo Ren has yet to demonstrate that he is anything more than a temperamental man-child who acts solely on impulse rather than strategy. The only thing he has going for him is that apparently the New Republic was basically a failed state and dissolved into chaos when Hosnian Prime was destroyed. But that introduces the problem of why we should root for the New Republic when it was obviously not worth saving. This trilogy needed an outline that encompassed all three movies from the beginning, rather than leaving it up to each individual director to pursue their "vision".

I care very little about the First Order - especially since I have to compare them to the Imperial Remnant/Fel Empire of Legends, which are far more sympathetic, and have simply shown far more character. Moden Canady was a great example of everything the Old Empire stood for, similarly to the likes of Pellaeon. Hux, Phasma, Kylo - none of them are worth following. I personally welcome any struggle between the First Order and the Empire's Old Guard, and I pray that the right people come away from it as the victors for the sake of my own interest in Star Wars content set after the new sequel trilogy.

The old guard has learned (finally) and adapted to the mistakes of the Empire. They will be the deciding factor in this struggle. On another note I agree with you end statement about older and younger generations 110%

Very insightful, you make a lot of amazing points here. It's easy to lose hope but as long we keep our heads together and learn from our mistakes we can do this. Also Dolphins aside I found the rest of your video where your talking about the first order very interesting.
probably my biggest problem with SW that it's main medium, the movies are... especially the new ones, when you hop in and watch, you will not understand a big chunk of it. and not only because for ex you didn't see the old ones, but because the films are just a small part of the story. the films do not tell you the wast majority of the story and characters and then the impression is that half of the crew is either an idiot or a pathetic ball made out of arrogance and bullcrap. if you want to understand it and them, you either read every book and comic or watch every TH-cam videos about it. this is... I couldn'tt show an SW movie to my gf without constantly telling her the little pieces. and if she would hate the movie, I would totally understand her. they are like a hollow slideshow if you ask me. short clips of something big. it is just somehow a thing in SW movies at least for me, can't enjoy them and the SW universe without deep searching for these informations. but it shouldn't be the case.

It was like that for the original trilogy and prequels too, let's be honest the "fight" scenes in the originals made everyone look like fucking idiots or old men who looked like they needed some Aleve. It wasn't until the books and comics that you saw what he really was capable of, same with every single main character actually in star wars anakins a whiny emotional bitch who appears to be in a relationship with a woman so much older then him it will make you feel uncomfortable until you read the comics or watch clone Wars and find out their ages are pretty close together her planet is just fucking stupid and they have queens that are possibly elected that also don't have the power of a Senator? Probably a mix of both.
Seems like the new generation among the First Order is of the mindset that "the old guys had the right ideas, they just didn't do them right/hard enough" so they try to repeat some of the strategic mistakes (ie, the Death Star/Starkiller Base) while fixing some of the tactical errors (shielded TIEs). They have to reinvent the wheel or they won't learn...

Nice video. The struggle between the Old and New Guard. Will the new Supreme Leader Kylo Ren have the authority to hold these forces together? I can imagine a scenario in which the Old Guard tries to outsted Kylo Ren and Hux by force. This fails and the New Guard purges the officer corps from the Old Guard causing the military effictiveness and stability to drop.
I actually think Kylo is a much more competent leader than hux, hux was a great administrator and did a pretty good job with the stormtroopers. Kylo is a bit emotionally balanced though so who knows, that is the big question going into the next movie. I feel like there has to be someone else at the top. Smoke died way to easily

Ben Harre Just finished the main campaign actually. Wasn’t great, wasn’t terrible. But the fighters in multiplayer are SO MUCH BETTER!!!😍

What they need is more officers like Captain Needa a officer who when faced with failure own up to it and doesn't try and weasel his way out of it like so many of his fellow Imperial officers shifting blam to subordinates and colleagues. Unfortunately his failure and apology was unacceptable by Darth Vadars high standards and unapologetic view on incompetence.

on one hand, their imbalance in authority and disagreements definitely poses them as weaker than their predecessor, but on the other hand, from an audience point of view, i like the contrast. the empire was well organized and most everybody had a common goal. the first order having internal struggles sets them apart from that and fortunately doesnt just make them a copycat.

Me and my brother did some for-funsies speculation about the future of the Galaxy, and we came upon a narrative that would be fucking awesome.
What if the First Order were to experience its own great schism? With leaders like Hux and Phasma leading those who still had deep loyalty and respect for Supreme Leader Snoke, and chose to mourn him, meanwhile Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren would lead the other half of those who wish to "Let the past die." And as the Resistance is a fractured, minuscule force at the moment, then they can't reestablish a democracy into the Galaxy, and thus results a power vacuum, with various factions arising to claim the Galactic scene.
I'm totally willing to suspend any disbelief if they establish that Captain Canady survives the destruction of the Fulminatrix so he can come back in Episode 9 as one of those Old Guard determined to get the First Order back on track. That character was awesome.
I still think that Starkiller base was a useful idea, that fulfilled its purpose well.

I discussed this once with a history teacher who agreed with me, Disney is basically following many an alt WW2 timeline, Nazis rise to power form a weak Republic, go on to expand then are slowly driven back and finally exit the stage after a grand battle (Berlin/Jakku) only to return years later from The Unknown Regions in full force (Antarctica/Argentina/Space) so we have to figure out how Snoke and Kylo work into that, is Kylo like.. space Hitlers grandson who took back the reigns of power?
Yeah like Hux decision to attack the resistance base first instead of the most obvious target like the fleeing ships. Strategy is obviously not a strong suit of the new guard.

A hyperdrive jump attack is basically like the firing of the death star super-laser, it has low accuracy, but high power.
well if you look at the original movies they slow down or even stop before jumping to hyperspace. this is indicative of jumping into a different 'plane of existence' called hyperspace which is connected gravitationally. this means that jumping to hyperspace requires extreme close proximity to your target in order to use the hyperdrive to crash into them. and so it would most likely be very low power, low accuracy.
well a lot of legends and other references has the hyperdrive get the ship up to light speed before entering hyperspace. so if we operate of of this instead, then yes it would be high power, though not so much low accuarcy as you can point your ship exactly where you want to hit. of course this means that the original movie is pointless, as the power of the death star is weaker than a cheap freighter filled with dirt going kamikaze. a single fighter could kamikaze the death star and take it out. both of these strategies could be done with autopilot, and thus you don't even need to sacrifice a droid. so the whole plot of the original movie becomes very silly. of course if we look at the space battle over the moon of endor (episode 6) we can see that when shields are up kamikaze fighters do essentially zero damage. drop the shields and you have the damage you'd expect (the A-Wing into the bridge).
so at the very least this sort of thing makes the first movie pointless, unless there is a good reason as to why it doesn't work. the last jedi shows us that there is no reason as to why this shouldn't be the standard way to take out big slow targets. this makes the whole space fight thing silly even in the same movie, especially for a fanatical regime that cares little for its pilots like the first order (or empire, or CIS).
We saw the Old Guard did get the last words in Rise of Skywalker. So Old Guard way cooler. If only Tarkin was Alive to show the New guard whats up.
