    If yes, then you should be a Chow Runner at BMT. A Chow Runner's basic duty is to report your flight for meals on a daily basis. It's an important job and an even more challenging one. Watch this video to find out more!

      Yup I was the runner in 1956 down in San Antonio. NO big deal at all. Just go and report, go back get the flight, jog down to the chow hall and in shortly. Piece of cake.

      True facts about the MTI's after that first week, they leave you alone. I was wing man for dorm chief doing accountability in addition to chow runner cause my entire flight was scared to leave the dorms. One night I was out there and a female from the baby flight was picking my brain for advice. As I'm talking to her the Master Sergeant always at the snake pit walks by and everyone around me went to attention. He shouts at me from the distance, "You know you're not supposed to talk to the females right?" Yes sir I know. His response shocked all the other trainees, "Alright as long as you know, have a good night." Guess I was lucky to go through in 2012 😂🤣

    I was sent to Med Hold and those MTI’s said the funniest stuff to chow runners, my favorite was this interaction:
    Me starting at attention:
    15 seconds go by and he notices me but doesn’t acknowledge me
    maybe 15 more seconds go by
    “Can I help you?”
    [Sir trainee Fullman reports as ordered]
    “What do you want”
    [Sir, Day Flight is prepared to enter the Dining facility from the EAST side]
    “Whatever.”
    Me being used to normal MTI responses I slipped up.
    [Seat my flight ye-]
    “I Said, ‘Whatever’!”
    A short moment of realization hit me
    I couldn’t hardly contain myself but I mustered a:
    [..Whatever! Yes sir, thank you sir!]
    “Go away before I throw my pen at your wingman”
    [PROCEEDING SIR]
    When I finished exiting the DFAC my sides nearly entered orbit holy mother of Jesus
    My wingman couldn’t even address our flight so I did that too.
    Grinning hard,
    [Day flight, tench-hut! Prepare to enter the dining facility- (I start giggling a little) All key personell fallout, fall in, followed by the third elemeeeeent!]
    Never eaten a meal like it since.

    In all my years you are the first one to comment at length on volunteering for the job of "Chow Runner." While it is not hard it is an open invitation to you having abuse heaped upon your head. But then when you look back on BMT in the years to come it will be one of those memories you will bust out laughing about.

      I was volunteered because I laughed at a guy telling them how to cut his hair when getting that first crew cut. I was the only chow runner, no trainee. Nobody trained me, just sent me to the pit, several times a day. They might ask you any question. I never got in trouble, but witnessed some embarrassing moments there. I learned how to fold underwear so good you could put them in a Bible and not know they're in there.

    So i was there. August 21 1956 We got to our barracks and standing outside, the instructor was asking us.........."Who can run the mile? ( no response ) "Who can run the half-mile"? ( again nothing, but i am getting ready to bust a gut lol Finally once again "Who can run from here to there"? I busted out laughing, and he said ................YOU are our chow runner. That was it. Not a problem. I was always an outdoor person anyway. The only thing was i had to get up about a half-hour earlier than the rest of the guys. Again, not a big deal at all. NO one bothered me. There was NO abuse. Things were good for the 6 weeks there. Nary a problem. Basic for me was quite easy. I just hated the HEAT!..................."Sir, Airman Basic W......S reporting for chow, Flight 1391" And that's all there was to it. Go get your men and i was outta there in a flash. LOL

    The job of Chow Runner has definitely had some changes since I went through Air Force BMT in 83. Back then there was nothing good about it, essentially, the TI picked the most scared and easily intimidated person in the flight. In our flight, the Chow Runner held that position for the entire length of BMT. At least then all you had to say after reporting was Flight XXX is ready to enter the dining hall, none of this East or West Side stuff and you were told to proceed, no cryptic instructions. The Chow Runner at least during the first week or two could pretty much count on losing a 341 or maybe even a 642 every time they approached the podium. I was also not aware of any special points or extra time the Chow Runner got, actually, I think he got less time. It was considered the worst job on the flight.

  • @realgoodscoobysnacks
    @realgoodscoobysnacks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Many years back, selection of the chow runner was much different. My TI didn't ask and he wasn't the least bit interested in finding someone with confidence. He found the person that screwing up the most in that first night. TH-cam gives people a serious up over the recruits arriving in the 1990's. I didn't have the slightest clue. It would have been great to understand prior to arrival; (1) how the lock that is issued to you that night, works; (2) what a reporting statement is; and (3) how following directions is vital on that first night. I was awarded the duty of Chow Runner Go that night. The 4 or 5 days to follow would be painful. But I quickly began to understand that Basic Training wasn't negotiation between me and the TI's.

    @kennethsouthard6042 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Back in 83, there was no benefit to being a Chowrunner, it was considered the worst job of all jobs. The TI picked the guy with NO confidence and he would get eaten alive by the TI at the podium and again by our TI when he came back out. If he was lucky the TI in the dining hall would chew up on him by himself, if he was not, the TI would motion to the snake pit, and the poor guy would have two or more other TIs tearing him apart. After we grabbed our food, we would have to stand until the last Airman came to the table, the last guy would then say, "Airman be seated." That's how we did it back in the 80s.

      I was chow runner in 1956 I was told by my TI when to go to report for chow, which of course would be a time after we had finished what we were doing ( most convenient time of course ). Run down to the mess hall, do the "report thing", and usually told 'Go back and get your flight" I NEVER had any problems whatsoever, whether it be with ANY members of my barracks etc. NO one ever gaveme any crap about it, even though you may have heard some STORIES....i don't understand why. People were too damn busy and maybe i just was with a great group of guys. Instructor was a decent guy, only yelled a couple times......as far as i can remember. It was great, especially around 5 in the morning, running to the mess hall. Previously i was used to getting up kinda early. Go USAF!

  • @HyperMoon
    @HyperMoon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yo they don't ask you to volunteer for chow runner lol, they give that to the person who is messing up the most, causing the most problems, etc. Chow runner sucks, it is stressful, mainly because you have alot to do and the TI's are scrutizing your every move. You have a reporting statement you have to remember, and you have to march well enough and do everything properly.
    Also, you said you get more time to eat? You eat last and in my experience, you get less sometimes, at best you get the same amount of time to eat. But sometimes the TI's rush everybody and tell everybody to finish and since your last you didn't get as much time as everybody else.
    Can't say i enjoyed being the chow runner but with everything in basic training, you get used to it.

You might not see it around these days. Security Forces might have a temporary holding cell but at least from my experience they are locked up off base for pre-trial confinement. ? still no one answer Next was 'Who can run a quarter mile'? That is when i started to laugh and he said to me: "You are the Chow Runner" I got the job I would wake about 15 minutes early than the rest of the flight, dress and run down to the chow hall "Sir flight number ( give the number ) reporting for chow" He would just say OK go get them Just a little formality i guess NOT a problem with me.

      Mike Goodwin Chow runner is a great job if you want to help out- but you will stick out a LOT. It's difficult for the first week or two, but you get it down quick and after a few attempts you should be good enough to the point where the MTI's wont mess with you anymore. You should consider SABC monitor or BEAST monitor (they help train, lead and drill their flight members in preparation for BEAST)

      The CLAW Mission of the LRC is a problem solving 1.3 mile exercise that replaces the old obstacle course and occurs within BEAST Wk. It is a pass/fail exam of BMT in which everyone must pass or the whole group fails. The story above is essentially correct although it is still being tweaked somewhat.

      Windex Monkey Okay here it is from start to finish:
      1. The flight will form outside of the DFAC.
      2. You and your fellow chow runner will enter.
      3. Wait to be addressed. Align yourself to the MTI. Say a reporting statement, followed by: "Sir, Flight ___ Dorm ___ is prepared to enter the dining facility from the ___ side.
      4. You will be told to bring the flight in. You repeat what he says. "Bring the flight in, yes sir, thank you sir."
      5. Go outside.
      6. Stand infront of your flight, assume the position of attention, and give the command "Flight ___ Dorm ___ at my command! Flight ___ Prepare to enter the Dining Facility from the ___ side."
      7. Your flight will respond by yelling "PROCEEDING SIR"
      8. You will say "All key personnel Fall out and Fall in followed by the fourth element!"
      9. Your flight will say "PROCEEDING SIR."
      10. About 5 people (water monitors and guidon bearer) will leave their positions in the flight and run infront of the fourth element (the line furthest to the right). They will then enter the dining facility, followed by the fourth element.
      11. Go inside.
      12. Wait to be addressed by the snake pit MTI.
      13. Center yourself, give a reporting statement, and say "Sir, Flight ___ Dorm ___ has entered the Dining Facility from the ___ side"
      14. He will say, "sit, eat, and get out." or something along those lines. It can change with however the MTI feels.
      15. Repeat him. "Sit, eat and get out. Yes sir, thank you sir."
      16. Stand infront of the tables, relieve the chow runner of the past flight, and take your post. You will assume the variated position of parade rest. You will then seat your trainees by telling them "front sir" or "back sir" to direct them to their appropriate seat.
      17. Wait to be relieved by the next Chow Runner.
      18. Go eat for yourself

    I'm pretty used to waking up at 4am to go to work already but how early do you wake up as chow runner?
    Do you have to get ready quicker?
    What did you find most frustrating?
    Im a pretty socially active/ independent person/ leader is that a good quality to have to be chow runner or dorm chief?

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, during the week, Chow Runners wake up at the same time as everyone else in the flight. However during Sundays, when there is no PT, you have to wake up early (even though you're not supposed to) so you can run out of your dorm as soon as revilie plays to get to the chow hall before everyone else. You always have to be dressed first though, no matter what day, so you can run down to the chow hall and make sure your flight is put in line for chow (it's kind of like running into a restaurant before your family so you can put your name on the list).
      Chow hall was most frustrating for most people when they have to learn their script. But it gets so easy so fast- It's just the first few times that you'll have to get chewed out before you get the hang of it.
      Being social and a leader is great. Chow runner requires a little bit of confidence, as well as DC

      Okay awesome! My recruiter was kinda like naw you want road guard(?) He kinda told me to volunteer right away to get a good job and not something like latrine duty 😓. Did you feel as if your body adjusted to the time schedule? Cause like I said I usually have to get up at 5am anyways I was just curious.

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh, haha that is true. You don't want to keep your mouth shut and end up scrubbing a toilet. And the stress and shock of the environment change will cause anyone to be automatically adjusted to the sleeping pattern. After the first week or so, most people are just waking up early and not really noticing it. Some people, however, never really get acclimated, and they're always grumpy and tired in the morning- even through tech school and active duty lol. Just the way it is.

    • @sari8239
      @sari8239 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see how that would be stressful. You said a few times in your videos that if a few people messed up the whole fleet paid for it. Is that mostly the first few weeks? Also are the people that are leaving from MEPS with you gonna be in the same fleet with you? Sorry Im asking so many questions!

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the screwing up occurs in the first week or two, anything serious mistakes after that can result in being recycled or receiving further disciplinary action (because you should know better at that point). And that's a good question- actually you probably won't be in a flight with your MEPS crew. Most MEPs crews get split into several different flights. I was split from mine- and I didn't see them again until graduation weekend!

    Again, we arent soldiers, we are Airman! Learn the difference youngster! Nothing wrong with getting the difficult jobs to put yourself in position to be an honor grad in BMT, but that means nothing when you get in the real Air Force! We arent going to hold a ceremony to congratulate you when arrive to your duty station! When you get in the real Air Force, most of us leaders arent looking for brown nosers! We are looking for hard workers, who show dedication to learn their AFSC, an support their squadron and leadership! Monthly, quartlerly, and yearly awards will come as we notice who are our star performers are and write packages for them. I can tell you as a 20 year Air Force retired vet, i couldn't stand brown nosers! Learn and do your freakin job instead of brown nosing and challenging SNCO's on work processes! Air Force BMT and AIT got yall thinking you can come in and do that crap, but me, i shut it down quick an put folks in their lane! We have some of you very same youngsters coming trying to tell leadership they dont want to go on certain deployments, not realizing thats going to screw your fellow Airman who been home for 4 months an has to go right back out, because you conjure up a BS excuse why you cant go! But oh, if its a money maker you dont mind going. Newsflash, we dont deploy to make money! We deploy because its our turn to go an support the mission! An if you are the type to go run an get put on profile in order to not deploy, an screw up your fellow Airman's P-Band, do your 4-6 year commitment and get out! Tired of seein of excuses why they cant go because their dog is sick, afraid wife will cheat on them, or they suffered a broken pinky toenail! Believe me whe it comes EPR time, your actions throughout the reporting period will be duly noted! Not giving you a 5 because of brown nosing or simply because you show up to work! You want a 5, show me you are worthy of it! Seperate yourself from your peers! Been through the process of having an IG complaint on me for giving a 4 rating, which was above average , but the person thought they were a 5, truly among the best! Complaint was dismissed after providing the Commander and IG with factual evidence to support a 4 rating! The person lucky it wasnt a 3, for i ver well couldve given that an backed it up!
