  • Whilst ascending Bryant's Gully as a means of getting up on to the Glyders and doing a series of Grade 2 and 3 scrambles I found a rock face which I hadn't seen before and decided to give it a go.

    Got stuck in exactly the same bit at the weekend.
    I shot up it to more or less the same place as you by the look of it. And then, as you say, you just run out of road and there’s nowhere to go.
    Didn’t realise how vertical it was until I got stuck either.
    Climbing down wasn’t fun or easy.

    "Fuck sake... what am I doing?!". Haha. I think a lot of us have been there mate :) Funny how we keep doing it to ourselves too! Do you think in this case it was the nerves that got you more than the route itself? (not poking fun, def happened to me before too on tryfan). It's hard to judge through the fish eye of a gopro but there seemed to be a couple of good routes around that crux if you could bring your feet hip high, but I know adrenaline, doubt, sweat and fear all factor in. Either way, great decision to turn around when you did mate. Best to fight another day and all that :)

    • @BraveDave
      @BraveDave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trust me, there was nowhere obvious to go from that top part. I'm not afraid of heights, so if there had been a solid route then I'd have taken it. But I couldn't see anything which had good enough hand holds beyond a meter or so, and I didn't want to pull myself up to something only to then have to try and down-climb back to where I'd just been, without being able to see where I was putting my feet.
      It's much easier when there's someone else there to spot for you, that's for sure! :P

    • @mehashi
      @mehashi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I trust you mate, your eyes were on site and 3d, I'm looking through a 2d fish eye :) 100% agreed on the downclimb. Once you pass an overhang you remove your only good self-rescue option. @DinnerForkTongue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, plenty of handholds and footholds but as you go up and the rock's erosion profile changes, the chance of finding multiple groups of 4 holds properly spaced apart for human proportions _and_ that lead upward lowers down to levels with way too many zeroes. Especially that overhang, I wouldn't trust an old bighorn ram to handle himself on that one!
