  • Using a re-amping technique, producer Sylvia Massy changes an uninteresting synth track into a bigger, broader, more 3-dimensional sound for her hybrid mix of Saint Savage "Paranoia".

      If a muso can't deal with honesty (not being rude, just direct & honest) they will not last long, esp if they refuse to notice that their songs don't work on the right people (or any people at all) and keep blaming their gear. The synth sound did rather just sit there like a dead duck. The result was way better. if they're smart, those fellows just learned something. :-)

      Or -- you can route a Pro-53 or your emulation of choice into some amp sims and reverb units, and zero people that are not sound geeks, producers and synth autists will notice or care. And in a context of a busy mix absolutely no one will be able to tell the difference. So keep that remodelling money for something actually useful. The real artistry is recognising that in the context of the track this synth stab was supposed to function as a brass section -- which she did -- and knowing how to do it. The expensive shitshow around it is absolutely irrelevant from that point on.

    • @milosmilosmilos
      @milosmilosmilos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@b_markovic music is abstract but people do feel the difference. Balthazar was a great band but until they got a great engineer to make their sounds bigger than life (since Fever) I couldn't get any of my friends into the band. Same goes for Tinariwen and Elwan.
      Non-sound geeks won't be able to explicitly define what it is about some track that make it for them, but sound porn -does- play a big part of it.

    • @b_markovic
      @b_markovic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@milosmilosmilos The point is that with today's quality of emulation and variety of both software and hardware (in both analog and digital form) available, it's more down to the ears, skill and aptitude of the mixing engineer, rather than the price tag of the units being used. At least past the recording stage (and this re-amping example is actually production, it's neither recording nor mixing in the narrow sense).

      Any synth can sound boring, depending on what you're doing with it. Everyone carries on about the 303, but in their original form - and more notably their original target audience - they were just plodding, dull bass note makers.
      Going a bit more modern, the Korg M1 had some fantastic presets...
      However, there are some that never get used... because they are dull and unmoving.
      To my ears, the original tone in this mix was warm - but lacked character. It was a little "cod" fuzzy analogue tone, that not intrinsically bad was a bit well... expected.
      Also, I would like someone to talk about me with the same level of admiration and excitement that she talked about that mic...

      @@sandrabecht4489 because it’s just a fact that there are not enough women doing mixing and production work. I’ve been a professional musician and writer a long time, and on the technical side of things 9 times out of 10, at least, you’re working with men. I’ve toured with dozens of FOH sound engineers for 2 decades. One time there was a woman at the board. I don’t view Massy’s work any differently than anyone else’s because of her gender, at all. But I really hope more woman see her and other women doing this and are inspired to get into it. You’re free to pretend representation in this industry isn’t an issue if you’re so inclined to do so, I don’t really care.

      @@mrnelsonius5631 if it doesn‘t matter to you, why do you keep talking about it? Just treat men and women equal. Reminds me of this woke leftist idiots, that are obsessed with race....

    Getting ideas for free and people put dislikes on the video, wtf is wrong with people these days

    • @Syklonus
      @Syklonus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why concern yourself with numbers on a screen? The dislike could be for anything - say a simple matter of a different opinion, but there isn't a "different opinion" button. Stop treating life like a popularity contest and ignore who likes or dislikes what.

    Sylvia, that's pretty darn good technique... You could do similar results with some "reverse compression", add plate or hall to it, with chosen effects, etc, ... and not have to re-amp, but I like your style and technique. Beautiful and dynamic in the mix !!! Great job.
