The Warriors Have a BIG Problem

The Golden State Warriors are cruising through the regular season but a big problem has emerged. The good news is the trade deadline has yet to pass but they must take action fast. Andre Iguodala once said that he plays hurt to protect Stephen Curry’s legacy - that quote should be in the minds of Warriors front office staff as they approach February 10th.

The Warriors do not at all need Wiseman to be Giannis or Ayton or any of those guys this year to win a championship. They already have Curry and Klay and Dray and Wiggins and Poole, Kuming, etc. They just need Wiseman to be good for 15 minutes a game to spell Looney and the rest of the team is plenty good to win. Next year, Wiseman hopefully comes in healthy, gets a summer league and training camp and preseason games, and then we see if he can dominate when they need him to.
The future core is Wiseman and Kuminga and Poole and Wiggins and hopefully Moody, and if it all works out Warriors will have another four or more rings over the next decade after this season, or more.
The idea of trading both centers for an injured center who would need to learn how to play with the Warriors system in the middle of the season as a "win now" move is laughable. That is a lose now and in the future move.

I think Looney is more valuable than you realize. The center position is the most important defensive position in the Warriors scheme; Draymond Green explained that you act like a defensive quarterback, calling out assignments and rotations. That's not something you can just pick up very quickly, so guys like Looney who know the schemes and know the switches are critical. It's telling that the Warriors don't often play Kuminga at that spot, which goes to show that as much as the Warriors love Kuminga, they don't think he's ready for that kind of responsibility.
Turner might be a great defender and a high IQ player, but could he pick up those schemes adequately mid-season? That seems like a major risk with limited upside, especially with the foot injury. I think the Warriors would rather roll with who they have and cross their fingers that Wiseman will return this season.
If they hold firm, the worst-case scenario is they don't win the Chip and most of the major pieces return next season (biggest FA decisions will be on whether to resign Looney, OPJ, and GP2). That's not a bad floor to have.

Nice work calling out the irrational Steph hate, and you have a point about people having unrealistic expectations about Wiseman. I think Wiseman's ceiling this year is contributing 10-15 minutes of solid defense and vertical spacing at center as part of GS's center rotation. However, regarding your solution for GS in second half of your video, there is zero chance the warriors trade for Turner. But that's a good thing! Even before Turner's foot injury, advanced stats show Looney is playing better this year than Turner. He is a better rebounder (one of the best offensive rebounders per 36), a solid rim protector, and one of the best screen setters in the league (an invaluable skill in the warriors system going back to Zaza and Bogut, and the reason why these supposedly 'terrible' centers were actually important pieces to the warriors winning formula). So even a straight up trade of Looney for Turner would be a loss for the warriors, who would be giving up their best interior rebounder and hard banging defensive big for a soft unathletic guy who shies away from interior contact, and who doesn't know warriors system, in order to have him disrupt their defense on a string as he chases block stats, and lower their 3 pt percentage in hopes he makes one of his (too many) 3 pt attempts... oh, and GS is supposed to throw in their number 2 potential future all star center to supposedly make the trade fair? An absolutely awful 'trade' for GS. But like I said, fortunately the GS front office is too smart to listen to click bait nonsense like this. You really just have to stop with the Turner trade crap. Go back and actually watch Pacer games against teams with elite centers, watch Turner get absolutely owned by those centers, and then come back and tell us again how he's the 'solution' to GS at center...

Trading away two players (Looney and Wiseman) for one player (Turner) is both misguided and risky. Golden State's motion offense relies upon everyone knowing when and where to screen. No guaranty Turner will pick up the Warrior's motion offense before the playoffs start. Whereas, Looney has spent years developing his chemistry in screening ... and has recently improved his timing on getting offensive rebounds. More importantly, what if Turner reinjures his foot? There is no defensive back-up for Draymond at the five. It would be a disaster. There is strength in continuity.

I ain’t really think about cauley stein but that’s a great point !!! When we’re healthy he would be a great 3rd option at center for us especially if knock on wood an injury were to occurred but a rotation of wiseman , looney and cauley stein when needed would do wonders for us especially against the suns who keep adding big man !!

I agree 100% James Wiseman is not worth waiting for. Plus, Kevon Looney is not a great defender and the dubs are losing games to the TIMBERWOLVES (no offense) because KAT is a great offensive big. If Myles Turner comes to GS, our ring is probably secured.

Hard to trade Looney but have to remember that he’s on a 1 year contract. Getting Turner now for Wiseman only gives Steph more of an opportunity to win now and Turners same age as Looney and more athletic. Wiseman will be a good center in time but because of injuries, the timelines not matching up as well as expected. The trade proposal also gives Dubs 2 #1 draft picks in 2022 to go along with nucleus of current roster.
