      Pretty pointless for the price. I have 1gig down/up from verizon fios and my ISP router gives me 900+mbps down/up when wired. A new router isn't gunna change that lol it's not like you can exceed what your ISP is providing. And considering I already get 600mbps down/up wifi around the house there's really no point to pay that much. 9 time outa 10 if you sign up for a 1gig plan the router your ISP provides is perfectly sufficient. Switching out the router is only worth it if you need specific features that the ISP's router doesn't support.

      Speed tests are only indicative of the conection to the speedtesting servers. Forget wired tests. They all perform up to spec unless its broken. Wi-Fi is where things matter. Check before purchases 2 things. First that the speeds/features advertised are what you want and second is that your existing hardwate supports WiFi 6. If not write down what does your hardware actually supports. Otherwise you will be wasting money on performance you won't see. The router will work by defaulting to the just the speed that your hardware supports so buying a very expensive router is a waste unless you actually have hardware that uses its features to the fullest or you intend to upgrade your stuff too.

  • @redoloo2453
    @redoloo2453 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The thing about Wi-Fi is there are so many variables going on, mostly having to do with what frequencies it's currently running on vs the frequencies your neighbors routers are going on. These channels are usually set to Auto by default on all routers, meaning if the channel your router is using is the same as one of your neighbors, there's going to be some instability because it's like two radio stations trying to broadcast at the same radio bandwidth, it creates a lot of noise...so the router will swap to a different freq. Now in a lot of residential neighborhoods, a lot of calls to ISP's have to do with either slow or buffering speeds, or random drops...one of the biggest contributors to that is the router's Auto feature, because it's clashing with the frequencies around them. I will usually go into their router and change their 2ghz wifi off of auto to 1, 6 or 11, and their 5ghz wifi off of auto to 44 or 161 because if theyre getting a lot of drops or buffering, chances are that router is just constantly changing channels until it finds a decent one, each time it does that it of course creates disconnections, which can be a few seconds of buffering to even a couple of minutes. That being said, you can download apps like 'Wifi Monitor' to see your neighbors wifi and the channel's they are currently using, and you can decide yourself what the best channel for that will be. In fact if you set the channel off of auto, you'll see that some channels give you poor speeds, others moderate speeds, and usually 1 or 2 channels that really hit that sweet spot of high speeds. And you might get some poor speeds here and there if you take it off of auto, but you'll never have to wait 5-10 minutes in high ping land waiting for the router to decide what frequency it wants to use.

    Usually on AT&T you have to run your router as an AP, put the AT&T router on a DMZ, or use a dumb switch to bypass it all together in order to avoid double routing and NAT issues. At least, that's how it is for residential. I'm not sure if a commercial line is any different.

    • @TheLink05

      He had both 5Ge and WiFi enabled at the same time, but the phone was using his WiFi signal to conduct the speed test, since most phones default to the stronger signal. Hi there, I just got an RT-AX82U the end of May of this year, and loving it. I have Spectrum 1GB and and am getting my advertised speeds on wired. On my iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is WiFi 6 compatible, I can get up to the 800's in download. Because it's Cable, I only get 40 up which is a bit above my advertised of 35. I like the game themed 82U, but I also like the typical black one, which is what I got. The router has only been in use a couple days, but has been solid. Great review.

    For the router, it is best to use the 2.5bE port if the modem supports it, many gigabit providers will overorovision slightly, thus you can often get a slight wired performance bump on devices using LACP, as well as 802.11ax clients where 2 stream 160MHz can get around 1.8Gbps real world wireless speeds. If you have fiber to the home, check if the ONT has a 2.5GbE port.

    The variance between the two Asus routers in WIFI mode could be caused by the antenna distance from other metallic surfaces. The Zaku (red one) is standing up on edge, and you moved it further from the networking box then the Wing Zero (white one), so the path length and interference differences could cause a small amount of difference. Lastly, with the white one having 4 antenna, it probably beam shapes a bit better (particularly when you have multiple things connected) so may provide more consistent speeds when multiple devices are connected.

Not only was the over all speed higher 5GHz is less congested in my neighborhood, resulting in less dropped or stalled signals. And with just that router on the first floor in the house I can cover most of my front and back yards.

      @@wolfshanze5980 That is incorrect. AT&T U-Verse uses a proprietary authentication method. Non-AT&T modems will not work with U-Verse. If you have the legacy DSL service (which seems to be abandoned), you can use a DSL modem. However U-Verse and AT&T Fiber internet don't allow you to use a non-AT&T gateway.
      I used to have the legacy DSL service (I think up to 6 Mbps) and would use my own DSL modem and router. When we got upgraded to U-Verse, we had no choice but to use their gateway. You can still use a 3rd party router, but you cannot get rid of their gateway.

      Its called Gateway, combination of Modem/Router. Modem gives out your IP address, then Router serves as DHCP server.

    • @buttknuckle55
      @buttknuckle55 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Frank_08banner19 Umm that's not how it works. DHCP server is literally the "thing" that hands out IP addresses. In his case, they're private IPs via DHCP (most likely) then being NATed to a public IP. I'm not sure this even qualifies as a modem. Modem is a short for Modulator/Demodulator and it relates to RF (coax plant). We typically consider a light to RF converters "nodes". Anyways, who gives a shyt. Kyle is cool and so are you. ok, boy where do I even begin.
    1) The WAN port on both of those routers must only be gigabit.
    2) the cables I assume are Cat 5E which max out at gig speeds.
    of course you're not going to get faster than gig (or +/- 900Mbps) because none of your other parts support it.
    the only reason the ax-82U did better was due to the extra antennae, and even then it wasn't by much.
    if you want better speeds and response time.
    1) Upgrade your cabling to cat6. (or 6a)
    2) designate the 2.5Gb port as the WAN
    3) get higher isp speeds.
    Your network is only as fast as your slowest piece.

    I do not know if the wifi test is really faithful, the original router is inside the rack, which being metallic blocks part of the WiFi signal, and the one in the test with the Asus routers you have put them outside the rack, so I don't consider that are in similar condition. The quality of the Wi-Fi will improve only with the fact that the routers you are testing have external antennas, but I think they are not on equal terms.
    On the other hand, the speed will not improve with a better router, since you will always have the bottleneck of your internet company, what will improve will be the interconnection between the PCs, NAS and servers that may be in the LAN, since the new router has more memory and a better processor and can better manage data transmission, in addition to incorporating one of them the 2.5 gigabit ethernet port.
