    Saw Richard twice. He was truly a one man band. Absolutely fabulous shows.

    Just came from his live performance. This man is an absolute treasure. Don’t miss seeing him live if you have the chance.

      I just missed my chance and I absolutely love this mans music and I rank his talents even higher than Jimmy Page and David Gilmour. Hell, Gilmour even covered his song Dimming Of The Day.

    I saw him perform this song live in concert. The whole show was phenomenal. It was just Richard with his guitar. A concert I'll remember for the rest of my life. If your able to see him you should. You won't be disappointed.

      Me too. He was right mesmerizing live. I never saw anyone with such absolute control of an audience since Bob Marley, but those people were all stoned.

      I've been lucky enough to see him once as a solo and once with his band here in Columbus Ohio. Both were phenomenal. With his band, he did a solo in Vincent Black Lightning that blew the roof off the place. Applause after an instrumental solo is much more common in jazz than popular music but this one got Applause and cheering and people on their feet. He is a great songwriter. I should check and see if he's on the road

      I just got turned on to his music and I’m sorry I had never heard of him until now. He’s awesome

    Got to sit in a radio show with him many moons ago. Absolute hero. Saw him onstage that night and it was transcendent - like watching Hendrix.
    Triple threat musician - voice, guitar and incredible songwriting. Some people have all the talent.

      Strangely as an acoustic player this is one of the few of his songs I do understand …. Relatively Simple but so appropriate

      I like this, but one version is better elsewhere. Richard has no idea this is his best song. His fans have no idea either. People are just wrong about so much. They sure do misunderstand. Oh wait something in his guitar might make this the best and singing is great. I misunderstood. The lyrics couldn't be better, the music is so great. I don't see how going from his other songs how he even came up with this as he jumped from writing OK to pretty good songs to this gem. Does he have another song like this.. sure would like to hear.

      I heard Beeswing this morning and just wanted to let Richard know to go back to the Derby beat and take that girl home.. Great writing ❤ Great feel in this one and direct first person and a very recent and present narrative.. As good as it gets

    This song. This song played on our local independent radio station just as my alarm went off about twice a week for a month until I became obsessed with finding out just what obscure artist was responsible (pre-internets yo)...only to find the greatest songwriter ever (and a damn fine guitar player to boot!). I say "greatest songwriter" and could argue the point, but it's not a thing to argue about. You can have your opinion if you disagree.
    But you'll be wrong.

    There's a reason Dylan asks him to play along when he performs... I was lucky enough to be at "Las Leyendas De La Gitarra" in Seville in 1992 when Dylan, Thompson, Les Paul, and that bloke from Pink Floyd (Roger Waters) all performed. Sadly I only had enough money for one night and I missed the Dylan night when Thompson played on All Along The Watchtower. I saw him the next night and he was brilliant as usual. He's worth every word of praise he's received over the years and every mile to see him

    No guitar pyrotechnics this time around, although Richard is perfectly capable. Instead, simple, perfect, beautiful accompaniment to a lovely song.

    I always find it amazing people can play guitar (or in the south: That thar GEE TAR)
    The ability to move your fingers from one position so effortlessly to another.
    *I usually trip when I walk and chew gum. And don't get me started on the tummy rub/head tap thing...I'll only wind up in hospital.
    But the ability to play guitar and sing (remembering all the words etc...) that is what astonishes me most about musicians.
    Okay, that and female singers who wear spandex one size too small.

    The fact that Rolling Stone had John Frusciante ahead of Thompson in that list has to be one of the funniest jokes of all time...

    • @samlelowitch
      @samlelowitch 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Beggar Wall I agree with you; however, one has to recognize that there’s an inherent silliness in these “Best Guitarist” rankings. After all, what are the criteria and who makes the determination? I really don’t care who is better than whom. I am going to listen to what I like.

    • @jackhammer5468
      @jackhammer5468 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      what would be funny is what would happen if you put an acoustic guitar in his hands. a run of the mill jam-band player vs a musician's musician. does he have a signature sound or thing that makes him unique? no Richard Thompson does. does RT fill stadiums? no. does popularity equal talent? no. go see RT with his band, or even a solo show and get back to me. you hear him and there's no doubt who it is. and the qualit8y of his songwriting craftsmanship matters. find me another play that can use a straight pick and play fingerstyle. It opens up possibilities on the guitar that what's his name never dreams of.

      I think John is an inspiration to sub par guitarists who put their soul into it. Just like Neil Young. Neither of 'em could play 52 Vincent Black Lightning though.

      I think ranking musicians against each other is the actual joke. Music and art in general should never be poisoned by the competitive mindset... competition is the domain of sports and politics... and selling magazines.

      I think Sinatra's arrangers would have enjoyed "swinging".this and it would have fitted well on one of his early 60s albums.
