Amy herself said first and foremost it is a song written about her breakup with Blake after he went back to his ex, but is intentionally written to be interpreted as speaking about struggles with depression and heroin, which coincided with the emptiness of the breakup.💔
Thanks for this reaction Cliff, I would love to see you do more of Amy's songs in the future.💞💖💞

no, she wrote when her daughter died and the recordings from the original song are actually from her daughter's funeral....she had a very difficult life, she coped with the funeral relatively well, but reality set in after that and Amy collapsed and that's the end of it

@@user-mk9mo7rk7m Everything I wrote previously was taken from an interview I watched, Amy herself said this was why she wrote Back to Black. Amy never had children and due to her bulimia found it difficult to conceive, that is why she wanted to adopt a young girl called Dannika, but sadly died before Amy could do so.

R.I.P. sweet Amy 💔 She was burying her broken heart😢The headstone read 'Here Lies The Heart Of Amy Winehouse', but it was removed after her sudden death. She battled bulimia in her teens/20's, alcoholism/drug addiction in her 20's. When she wrote 'Back to Black' her biggest vice was alcohol & weed (''You love blow, and I love puff"); she spiraled downwards and was in a deep depression ('I go back to black'), drinking everyday - but when she got sober, she blew up worldwide with Back To Black (her 2nd album) & was relatively 'healthy'. Then the scumbag that destroyed her (‘Back To Black’ is about him) went back to her when she released the album & used her as a meal ticket. That's when she went really downhill & got into hard drugs with him - she married him, she adored him.....but he was so toxic & tragically she paid the price for loving him.
The entire 'Back To Black' Album is a MASTERPIECE.....It literally saved my life....Amy got me through one of my darkest depressions - I'm forever indebted to her.... She had that incredibly unique gift of being able to connect with those who were in pain - her lyrics, her music but combine that with her amazing voice and you have a LEGENDARY artist....gone far too soon....this world & fame was too much for her to cope with.
I will never forget the day she died - 23-07-11...I couldn't even listen to her music for over 6 months, and I still cry for her.....she was my Muse.
I love her acoustic version of 'Back To Black' live from Dingle - flawless! Also, listen to ‘Love is A Losing Game’, ‘You know I'm No Good’, ‘Rehab’, 'Me & Mr Jones' and a couple of covers - ‘To Know Him Is To Love Him’ or Hathaway's 'I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know' - WOW - mesmerising, haunting and such emotive vocals...basically what she did best.
❤🧡💛💚💙💜🖤BTW Her 1st album 'Frank' is also amazing - she was only 19.
I hope she is finally at peace🖤🌹

The entirety of the Back to Black album is one of the most important works of pop in the last 25 years. Listening to this masterpiece always saddens me a bit because of what was lost and what could've been. She just wasn't ready to be such a public figure at this point and it cost her her life.
Back to Black was mostly produced by Mark Ronson, and the band was The Dap-Kings, who also backed the late soul star Sharon Jones.

She was with this musician who was really messed up with drugs and I think that’s how she got into drugs herself, but from the top of my head I am not 100 % sure. She was Super talented, sweet and funny. It’s such a shame, so young!! R.I.P angel: I bet you are making music with the greats that left before and after you. 'You go back to her, I go back to BLACK'. Black can also mean darkness, depression, a very sad place. And I suppose, she's burying her heart in that little box. Does it reference drugs? Personally, it had that meaning as well as people in pain often look to substances to escape. She did say "you love BLOW and I love PUFF' so cocaine and weed.

Yes, yes there was for quite som3 5ime. Amy Wineho7s4 was a tortured soul who more than once tried to or at least had others who cared about her try pushibg her to rehab and sobriety but even though she had a large support group they couldn't make her getting clean and healthy a thing that lasted long term. She was a unique singing talent. Her voice and style oozed like melting butter on hot rolls, but not just any hot rolls ,these were spscial, only after someone dropped these rolls where they collected salt ,
grit and grime of the city, from the many different ones who immigrated and assimilated over the past generations who gave some of their blood sweat and tears that made th3 gritty part collected into the sweet hot rolls and butter that become something at least in from plac3s like 9v3r ti.e left a bit of th3ir 92n bl9od sweat and tears dying grit and in sandy grit and the baker decided to not scrap th3m and inst3ad brush off some of the grit and offer them up to customers as if they were perfect. Amazingly, the hot rolls melting butter and the grittyness of the city, a place where one finds the same island flavor in places such as such as the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Bahammas, and more Amy had a bit of all thos3 rolled up in her singing style. such along with a gritty Bronx New York sultry and smoky vibe to her it felt as if she shared space with the speedier side, the back alley bars. The dives that nobody will adm8t t9 going to

All you have to do is look at her releases to know that Amy was quite troubled through her career. I recently watched a documentary that was so heartbreaking, it always seemed to me that she wasnt ever truly comfortable with her success, she definitely had issues with her family and her love interests. The drugs and alcohol really became destructive towards the end, all played out on a public stage. I feel so sad that she didn't seem to have the right management to handle the paparazzi. You should look into, really what not to do when dealing with fame.

Just for some added context around the meaning of this song, the drug references that you got from it is a personal interpretation, but Amy described "black" as being a metaphor for depression and returning to a bleak state of mind. Amy's battle with hard drugs didn't actually begin until after this song was written and released, although she already had developed issues with alcohol by this point. Contrary to popular belief, her time using hard drugs was relatively short compared to how people remember it in retrospect as it was so widely covered in the press that it became synonymous with her public image. She was actually only using hard drugs for around 18 months in 2007-2008, after that she defeated that addiction but ultimately her dependence on alcohol was the one that took her. Fantastic artist and great lyricism, she will always be missed.

I share the same sentiment - her artistry is phenomenal, but you hear her music in a new way now, and there's almost no way for it not to be haunting. Mind blown on the "tread a troubled track" lyric - I caught the obvious (like everyone) about her relationship/life, and then thought of track lines you get from IV drugs as a possible dual meaning, but even as a musician I never connected the possible third meaning of laying down a troubled MUSIC track. Cliff, man, thank you for keeping this old fart's brain young-ish. (I mean, okay, I'm not ancient, but any chance of having a "wild night" was gone about a decade ago. :) )

Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning in 2011 in London. She was said to be bulimic and suffered from mental illness, drug addiction and substance abuse.

Amy did say the somg was about her break up with her ex Blake and their shared issues with drugs and alcohol

I believe it's around a relationship but is meant to have the double meaning of heroin. "You go back to her, and I go back to black" you leave me, I get depressed and go back to the drugs. That's how I see it. Im a heroin addict myself.

The way I feel and hear the lyrics is that she's commenting on her relationship with Blake, drugs, and relationships as a whole. She struggled in her romantic relationships with men and this song is about repeating patterns. She's choosing the wrong thing (drugs) when others (relationships/Blake) go sour. She's on a see-saw of balancing and it isn't working out for either person. Big fan of Amy, may her memory be for a blessing

Her documentary blew my mind, she was such a legend. Unfortunately her catalog is very small, her time came too soon... great reaction Cliff! She only had 2 studio albums, Back to Black was the second and completely about her breakup with Blake

I'll be honest, I didn't catch all those doubles (and very much agree with the drug innuendos), but whether actually referring to DRUGS or just that relationships with some people can be LIKE a drug is probably open to interpretation. Although, with all these drug references I will say, I'm a little more curious now, knowing it was on Glee...some heavy shit to introduce to young minds.

To be fair it was more of a tribute sort of thing. The majority of the public just assume it’s about heartbreak rather than drug. Or course they get the blow and puff reference but the entire song in general is a 60’s inspired heartbreak ballad with modern lyrics. I doubt they were trynna introduce drug problems in glee with this song. The woman who plays Santana sounded a lot like Amy and fans often mentioned it so after she died they did “Back to Black” and “Valerie”.

I’m sure there are some drug and booze references in Back To Black, but it’s best not to look at it like a riddle to get stuck on

I don't think you're wrong. There are a ton of implied meanings and a definite drug theme underlying the lyrics.

You are over analysing, “You like blow and I like puff” is a reference to drugs, but I see no cryptic references elsewhere.

Seems to be about a couple with addictions to me. The man left the woman for an ex or kept cheating on her with an ex, and she does drugs to cope with the pain, almost certain he'll come back to her again eventually... but there's a lack of certainty there.

I think you are so used to reacting to rap you see doubles, triples everywhere, and you could well be right. I write poetry, and used it initially to 'hide' my real feelings from prying eyes, hidden in plain sight

The lyrics mention "you love blow and I love puff" so it is also about taking drugs and a failed relationship.
