I live in Colorado, we have woodhouse's toads here and every single night in summer I go out and save toads from being ran over. It's actually comforting knowing people give a shit about these beautiful little animals. I actually used to have a western toad named Bentley, I had him for almost 4 years and he was my best friend no joke. Protect the earth don't exploit it... thank you guys for helping these strong badass little creatures

My girlfriend and I went to a high alpine lake in Valley County, Idaho a few weeks ago, and the whole border around the lake was swarming with little black tadpoles. As a hobby herper, I caught some and put them in my empty aquarium at home. In a few days, they COMPLETELY cleaned my tank of algae 😂 After researching a bit, I theorized that they are western toads. They are almost all fully formed now (but still tiny) and it confirmed my theory! Western Toads! I want to keep them until they are full adults, then release them again if I can.

Pesticides have not only reduced lots of their food supply, Even pesticides resistant insects still posed risks to as well. Anyone who remembers los angeles in the 80s 90s saw immense forms of biodiversity. From slender salamanders in urban backyards to grasshoppers, Jerusalem Crickets, and if course western toads.

You sound like you have a good heart and want to help. Be mindful that depending where you live, there may be laws against the capture and breeding of wild animals. It's also important not to release a species into an area where they don't normally occur. This could threaten local species by introducing a competitor for resources. It could also potentially spread dangerous pathogens to other creatures. (eg. Look up the Chytrid fungus)

You are so kind to want to help. But captive breeding toads is best left to professionals, long time hobbyist, or wildlife rehabilitator. There is more to it than just catching toads, sticking them in tanks, expecting them to breed, and then release. It simply just shouldn't be done. Toads also just dont do well as far as reproduction goes in captivity. Very few breeders have been successful. What you can do, is make your own yard into a toad friendly habitat and encourage those you know to do the same. It will help attract the toads naturally living in your area and give them a place to live safely in peace. I have been lucky to have land that American and spade foot toads along with many other amphibians have chosen as their home. They even breed in neighbors ponds, and my animal water troughs. I ended up building a few ponds that they now use and they hibernate in the habernacula I've created. My husband has agreed to not till or now certain areas where the toads like to burrow as well to keep them safe. If you do this, you can help, without the risk, and enjoy them from afar in their environment and not keep them caged.

We've been trying to make our little piece of property (from a cow field )to plant, water and shelter heavy trying to increase the toad population here. But we have had zero luck with the pond being used for toad breeding... We've got toads in the area and seen them around but no luck getting them to breed in the pond. any ideas? We are also trying to get monarchs as well with milkweed but ugh nothing, three years on it now.
Were located in Ravalli County in western montana

I live in the Cariboo region of British Columbia (east of Williams Lake) and when we moved here fifteen years ago there were toads everywhere. We had to be very careful where we stepped, especially in the evening. Toads of all sizes, everywhere. Unfortunately, they began to decline rapidly, and mow I go months without seeing a single one. It's a big deal when we do. My wife has one that keeps her company in her greenhouse.
Around here, the aerial spraying of the forests with glyphosate is being blamed. The logging companies do this to kill off deciduous trees such as aspen and birch, so the more valuable spruce and pine don't have any competition. We occasionally see helicopters doing this not far from my home. Is this the problem? I just don't know. We must get to the bottom of this.

I recommend watching the full length Toad People documentary if you get the chance. There are screenings that take place periodically throughout BC. I think at some point, it may become available on a streaming network. Here's more info on the documentary and those who helped make it happen: toadpeople.org/
