I lived in Dumagete for 10 months last year, just to see why many go there. For me after a few months I don't see the draw there. Mountians are nice but how many times can you bike up there with a few falls. Streets are not that good for walkers, not much in side walks. Is a little crowded, and not real clean. Limited malls. Boardwalk ok but not that special. My opinion thanks...

Like your video, very interesting. I never thought Dumaguete and suburbs could become the mecca for foreigners not only for retirees, but also for non retirees. I'm so glad to hear this as I come from Dumaguete originally, but currently living in California. Well, thanks to Forbes Magazine. I think you all know that Dumaguete was in Forbes Magazine's list as one of the world's best places to retire back in 2014.
I'm also from Dumaguete and proud to be. Have a couple of properties in VaLencia , Zamboanguita is my home town. I love Valencia, it's 10 deggrees cooler than Dgte., living here in Washington State, USA. I saw that article on Forbes Magazine as well. I love your video Mike.
@@mikesphilippineretirement thanks for clearing that up. I already have a wife and she would be pretty pissed if I traded her in on a newer model just to buy some real estate. Hoping to make the move anyway in about two years when I retire.
Thanks for the update mike... subscribing just working on a DB pension for 15 years and agressively investing with me and my SO who is a white female Canadian who really fell in love in Philippines... don't want to live with a low quality of life... We plan to build a modern homestead. and just enjoy the nature and slower life style. Really praying Philippines will follow Thailand's suite to have more JCI accredited hospitals so it will be more appealing for health care.
I Love Duma and it's Boulevard, Valencia in the mountains with waterfalls, Dauin and scuba it's a rather magical place. If I can find a special spot at an affordable price I will probably buy, but I'm not holding my breath. With what's going on with land prices there I won't be surprised if buy land somewhere else. I know things are getting more expensive everywhere but from what Greg and Wilma have shared I'm going to look farther afield. There is a lot of magical places in the Philippines.... and Duma is one of them. As far as it being "Grownup", well I don't know about that. Let me know when they get their first stop light and how that goes.... hahahaha. Thanks for the update Mike, I think I watched as many minutes in adds as I did you, lol. Peace and Love, B Goat
Unfortunately, although people do not often like it, places always change, sometimes it's for the better, or sometimes, in my experience, and I've lived in a lot of different places, for the worse, which is why I've lived in a lot of different places, this is called progress, and whether you like the changes or not, it's going to happen, if it didn't, the place would stagnate, and the same people would get richer and everyone else would get poorer, so you have a choice, cope with the changes, or find another place to live, know however, that the place you choose, will also change in time.
The reason I watch your channel and Janet is the information you both put out. Plus your down to earth people. Easy to talk to and ask questions we have. Plus your content is very interesting and keeps our attention. As far as Dumagete is growing and land purchase will continue. Tyvm for your channel and the few others I watch. Keep up the great information 👍
You are correct, Mike, in saying that Filipinos are now driving the economy. There are many indicators for that. When I first started coming here 25 years ago, very few Filipinos would dine out in restaurants. Even upper class Filipinos (like doctors, lawyers or business men) would drive surplus cars, while now you can see a lot of expensive brandnew cars on the road. More people are building cement houses instead of nipa huts. All these things indicate that life is getting better for the locals and I'm very happy to see that. But this is not always in favour of expats. Prices are soaring. For the price that I built a 7 bedroom mansion on a 1,054m² lot 20 years ago, you will now have trouble finding a decent 2 or 3 bedroom house on 200 or 300m².
I was watching a coffee vlogger who was visiting the Philippines and he stopped at a great coffee shop at the Henry called Coffee Collective. Have you tried it? What were your thoughts?
Dumagette is beautiful but if you don’t have a GF there it’s kinda lonely after few days . But love there I’m now in Iloilo and enjoy myself go back and forth to visit

Just wanted to let you know that I met a Philippine woman on a dating website. We communicated on that website for 6 months. I then came over to Davao to meet her. I was in country for 16 days. We had a good time. I then came back again 5 years later and stayed for 60days. We communicated via email between visits. We also Skyped from time to time. Last year I came back again and stayed for 59 days. I’m in the process of trying to help her get a visa to come to the USA and visit me. That is not an easy process. Still working on that with her. Thanks for your time. Galen
Good choice on taking the high road. I enjoy your videos. Dumaguete was a nice place to be. I was there a year ago and will be back again maybe for good.
In the Philippines there is something called "crab mentality." It's been part of their culture for a lot longer than expats have been going there. It's where they try to tear down each other especially if the other person is doing better than them. Silly really, yet expats are adopting this behavior and its really an ego thing. Of course it's not all expats, but on youtube its a business and therefore there is competition. What's sad is that I kind of understand it coming from young people - but we're talking 30, 40, 50, 60 years old! Embarrassing just for views, subscribers, and an internal ego boost. Duma is not bad of course, but it has to be your cup of tea and part of that package is you will be around other foreigners more so than out in the province living a quiet or farm life. With 7000 islands in the Philippines it seems most expats want to be close together because we sure don't inhabit most of those islands, we tend to live in close proximity to one another. Nothing wrong with that, but again not for everyone. Society has changed a lot since you moved there as well. We are a tear a person down type of society now and me first and you're wrong/I'm right. When you reach a certain maturity level , maybe when life kicks you down or you eat some humble pie enough, you grow up and turn from boy to man. Most expats there are men, but plenty of young immature ones there too. You come to PI to relax, breathe, escape the rat race maybe, start a new life. It's embarrassingly sad to see guys make the move and live their lives as if they are in high school. If you're a content creator you have to have thick skin in this game and be able to actually ignore people. They feed on the attention and without it they wither away. For me, it was the quiet life, a nice house but away from traffic, and close to a good hospital. To each his own, but do know that like any booming city or state where you're from as the population grows so to does the population of people just like you. Likely never to be an issue for you, but something to consider when deciding where you lay your head. Great conversation Mike. Thanks for actual good content. Subscribing today!
Capitalistic Competition. Everyone is running commercials now, and the quality of the production value is increasing. The market is getting saturated. You moved from the fight for the ALL MIGHTY DOLLARS to the fight for the ALL MIGHTY PESOS.🤣 The more things change, the more they stay the same. There is a saying in business; 'If you're not growing, you're dying' Most people in business are not happy just making a living. Apparently, some expats can't leave America's DOG EAT DOG mentality behind. Don't change Mike. Stay solid, stay cool, stay ethically sound, and I will always be a big fan like I have been from the beginning. 🤙👍👌
I retired to the Philippines with a wife, not to find a wife. Our family doesn't live in an area popular with foreigners, primarily because no one has heard of it - suits me. My family came here having already bought property and having established a business. We have a decent income. Our kids are sorted. I watch various bloggers who are based in the Philippines simply to see how other people live. I don't personally have a channel since my life and that of my family is private.
Not always. Some are trying to help people out and do provide good information. As long as they can cover there costs and maybe bring home a few $$. That’s fine. It’s the ones that rely on it to support there lifestyle.
@@Mikeyyyy_L yeah i get it i just know that it cost or some door to put up this kind of a channel instead of just getting an apple phone and having some girl dance around in a pair of panties or something. Hi Mike, like in the old days during the California gold rush, seems like nowadays anyone with a phone is starting a TH-cam channel, most like 90% per garbage. Filipinos I believe, mostly do to the lack of employment opportunities are trying to get in on it as well, don’t you think, Just my opinion, but the TH-camrs (phenomenon) will go the way of the 🦕. RIp because if you’re honest w/yourself, let’s face it, content, creativity…etc is horrible, yours be one of the exceptions of course 😃

I guess when you call Stephen's fiancee a who're all over the Dauin and Dumaguete, do the same about Mark's wife and top it off by calling the parents pimps that are selling their daughters the least that will happen is getting punched out. My guess is the parents were not told because the outcome for Justin and the punching bag would be way worse if that Barangay handled it. If that goes to court and the judge hears in a bench trial what Justin was telling people about these two girls and the parents he won't care about Mark's fight. The precipitating acts were the disparagement of two Filipinas, a mother and father. All crimes in the Philippines and done multiple times. These acts were fueled by two things. Justin asking people to borrow money which he admitted as he paid back at least one person. Then there is the punching bag. He wanted Stephen's fiancee and Mark would not introduce him because as he said he found him to old and not good enough. The guy is 14 years older than Stephen. There is way more to this story and Justin is the stimuli behind all of the problems. He is the guy that riles everyone up but then backs off to not get his hands dirty. Justin's problem is he will become a focal point in any trial if it occurs. Beyond that those two men better have eyes in the back of their heads because if the people in the two sisters and their parents Barangay find out the least that will happen is deportation. In the Philippines you cannot shame women and their parents in that manner as they will take justice into their own hands. These idiots have no clue what can happen if the girl's parents find out the extent of what was being spread around about their girls. In Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, China foreigners disappear when this happens. In Japan Justin and his cohorts would be arrested pending a trial and deportation. In all of these Asian countries you cannot shame women and families as saving face is a fact of life and no foreigner is going to run his mouth. Look at the vlogger and his camera man rotting in a Japan jail for their videos as they await a pending trial with not date set. They disparaged both the country and multiple people where in one video it ends because street justice occurred. A bloody face is the least of his troubles and then some for Justin as he was the Marites spreading the worst chismis possible.
Hey Mike, I’ve been watching some social studies about the negativity on social media and here’s what they say in focus groups you get a focus group together you play a negative ad at the beginning of the letter of negative video at the beginning of that group and then you play 20 minutes of positive videos and you ask them what is most memorable and 80% of those peoplewill pick things from that negative at that why that is I don’t know I’m not a psychologist I know I’m just an average guy and I try to be positive, but they’re absolutely is connection as to why some bloggers become successful and have nothing but negative videos. I just thought you might find that interesting.
As usual Mike, you must put people's ignorance behind you, and live your life. The haters will always be there, as they love to hate you. ( I know, as I've been a hated man most of my life, for being honest!!). Dumeguete must be a small town, but a beautiful town. The only vloggers I know of is , ( YOU and JANET, PAUL and BABY MAE, and THE PHILIPPINA PEA). Everyone else doesn't count in my book. I get alot of wonderful information from you'll and that's what keeps me coming back for more! This silliness of schoolboy behavior while doing vlogs, is out of control. These people are just jealous of your fame, and wish that they could get attention like you do. I am looking forward to meeting my trio of informants in the Philippines. The only people who tell things like it is!! Keep everything great!❤
A few years ago my brother and me started to sell some items at a well established in door flea market. It was comical and sad how the people that had booths there for years would react to any competition. They were very hostile fighting over peanuts. That is what all these TH-camrs remind me of. This phenomenon is not just happening in the Philippines, I see it Florida with these real estate TH-camrs in Florida bad mouthing each other
Mike, I am very glad that people like You and Janet, Paul and Mae, and a few others set the tone for what it is like in the Dumaguete area, and since my travels there are in my future, I will want to visit with you when I get there.😊
Hello mike, I'm coming to the Philippines in may or June for 6 Months where would you recommend and what is the long term rental costs. I'm living in Thailand . Thanks!!
Hi Mike, as I understand you many foreign couples are able to buy land now, thougt that was impossible, did the law change about that? Can you explain in one off your next videos?
From what I see Dumaguette is a relatively small place which for its size has a relatively high concentration of expat vloggers. In terms of content a few vloggers avoid reporting on negativity yet still seem to be caught up in the drama. Paul has done some great vlogs about Social Security from the US. What assistance the US Embassy can offer US Citizens there. The process he went through to organise his wedding. Tips for transferring money. Gio and Reekay do some fantastic resort and restaurant reviews and talk about work opportunities for expats. Your property guide info is also excellent. The thing to bear in mind is none of you are professional media guys nor experts on Filipino culture, relationships or legal issues. I think its great to get an ordinary persons perspective. If you want great entertainment take out a Netflix or similar subscription! Don't sit at your screen and try to be a critic! I started watching a number of vloggers some of them I tuned out on. I don't feel the need to criticise I just stop watching. I've seen vloggers get more comfortable on camera and with interviewing I don't expect CNN quality or cutting edge content. A few volggers give me what I want an expats viewpoint and experiences of life there.
I like the idea of having American friends near. You are all ambassadors to the USA. I hope you guys will help each other if one of you is really in need.
Duma is ruined in my opinion. 6 years I lived in Duma...sad to see the bad changes. The traffic is now as bad as cebu city just shorter distances. The pinoy dog problem is out of control and nothing is done about it so it is very dangerous to drive a scooter at night. The cost of rent and to purchase a house has gone through the roof. WAY WAY too many drunk old puti's too with 25 year old girls ...sad. Moved to Mindanao and don't regret it
Mike it's too expensive to build there now! You know it. 200 thousand us dollars is not enough to build there!!!! No fooling around, it's now a rich man's paradise. All the vloggers say it!!! In around about ways!!!!
Make your videos more interesting. Don’t just sit in one place and talk. Show the areas you are talking about. Edit your video’s and show what you are talking about. Please. I love you information. Keep it real and interesting Mike. Anyone can talk.
Dumaguete seems 'different' than many other areas over there. World Zoom just returned to Cebu from Indiana & reported vacancies in many Condo apartments near the beach and airport area ? Apparently post covid hasn't returned to even close to pre covid occupancy levels. Heard the same about Manila too. Many expats are simply not returning ! -- Some speculate the lock downs pissed them off in many cases ?!? Others speculate the noise the stray dogs the garbage everywhere traffic beggars and the numerous negatives took a toll ? Perhaps they don't trust the Govt. now not to 'over-react' from their point of view for any future events ? 🤔 Whatever it is - I do know the cost to travel is double now also ! The deals may not be worth the trip as much as it used to be (?) both the travel combined with the local inflation ? -- Cambodia is said to have 250,000 US Citizens move there in the past decade ! Saw it was reported to be 69% cheaper cost of living than the average US !!! Retired and young digital nomads + English teachers paid about $1400/mo. where you can live fairly well on $1000/mo. ( ? ) -- Just wanted to share. / Take care.

The smartest thing a young Filipina can do is start a TH-cam channel. They wiill quickly be monetized and make money. From what I have seen all seem to get men who play the White Knight and send money. I have seen three build homes this year and when they mention having to slow down until their next TH-cam check arrives in comes the next infusion of money from foreigners. The other thing they are hoping for is finding a boyfriend, fiancee or husband. In the last three months there are at least 4 that I know if who have found this thru their channel. Smart girls. Then they tell their friends. Then there are mote family or friend's. I have an ex young Filipina who I am still friends with. She is engaged and he already built her a home on family land. There are six sisters and cousins all with foreigners. Two with more than one. Welcome to TH-cam.
I wanted to make a REACTION VIDEO about a nice couple in Angeles City ares that has been my friends for many years and supported there channel but they changed thier format from being an informative and helping others coming to the Philippines to one of the top DRAMA CHANNELS trashing other vloggers and spreading RUMORS just to get ratings... I was so disappointed... when I asked advice how to create and grow my TH-cam channel they wanted me to pay large amount of money and when I refused they blocked me, lol.... I decided not to make a reaction video to bring myself to thst level ...😂

Great video. Thanks for the info.
Welcome!
Interesting!
You mentioned foreigners buying land and building houses. I was under the impression that foreigners couldn’t buy land, has that changed?
with the Filipino wife

Thanks Alex
Peace and Love, B Goat
thanks for watching Billy
Thanks so much 😊
You are correct, Mike, in saying that Filipinos are now driving the economy. For the price that I built a 7 bedroom mansion on a 1,054m² lot 20 years ago, you will now have trouble finding a decent 2 or 3 bedroom house on 200 or 300m².
thanks for your insights

Love the comment and thanks for subscribing
Yes, the "crab mentality" exists wherever homosapiens are found.
There is a saying in business; 'If you're not growing, you're dying'
Most people in business are not happy just making a living. Apparently, some expats can't leave America's DOG EAT DOG mentality behind.
Don't change Mike. Stay solid, stay cool, stay ethically sound, and I will always be a big fan like I have been from the beginning. 🤙👍👌
Love you Billy you been here from the start

I retired to the Philippines with a wife, not to find a wife. Our family doesn't live in an area popular with foreigners, primarily because no one has heard of it - suits me. My family came here having already bought property and having established a business. We have a decent income. Our kids are sorted. I watch various bloggers who are based in the Philippines simply to see how other people live. I don't personally have a channel since my life and that of my family is private.
Enjoy your life and your Family

Hi Mike, like in the old days during the California gold rush, seems like nowadays anyone with a phone is starting a TH-cam channel, most like 90% per garbage. You are very small minded... You already know this... If u are minding your own business at said Coffee shop, Knowone is going to just smoke u out for no reason, unless it was provoked or you poked at M.T...🙄🙄🙄
I just thought you might find that interesting.
that is very interesting thanks for sharing that with me

A few years ago my brother and me started to sell some items at a well established in door flea market. It was comical and sad how the people that had booths there for years would react to any competition. They were very hostile fighting over peanuts. That is what all these TH-camrs remind me of. This phenomenon is not just happening in the Philippines, I see it Florida with these real estate TH-camrs in Florida bad mouthing each other

How are the couples moving there together buying property unless one has dual citizenship?
the Filipina partner has Dual Citizenship. They plan and do things the right way
The smartest thing a young Filipina can do is start a TH-cam channel.
