Thank you Lablondes for the information. Good job my mum is not around anymore (sadly really). Born and raised in Castlebar County Mayo she was schooled in Irish dance. She'd have clipped my ears for suggesting a mandolin.

I remember seeing Steeleye doing this at the Manchester Free Trade Hall during the "Live at Last" tour with John Kirkpatrick on accordian & Nigel Pegrum behind the drum kit. And of course Tim Hart.

I love it when Benji forgets the words and makes something up. Rick Kemp had a habit of doing that I seem to recall.
Love this band and this recording.
Perhaps when Jesse comes back they should keep Violetta as well.
    Steeleye goes 8-piece!

I'd certainly go along with keeping Violeta. Great bower and she sings as well.

Violeta (Vicci)is a delightful person too - many a chat at gigs. Now doing solo shows.

The words originated around 1840, so a more modern song than Steeleye usually performs! Even Fairport and Waterson-Carthy covered this song about a "married" soldier pursuing a pretty maid.

A fan since they formed so many years ago. Almost the same age as Maddy. Not much they do disappoints me. Nor does this rendition of an English folk classic. Also been recorded by none other than Ralph Vaughan Williams. What makes tihis version stand out is the small duel between violin and guitar. Or is it a mandolin?

I'd like to hear them do it in the same key as Percy Grainger's version.

They've missed a verse out, the last but one:
Now soldier wilt thou marry me
Now is thy time or never
For if thou dost not marry me
    I am undone for ever
(with me rol dum de day etc)

Lovely rendition but really miss John Kirkpatrick's accordion.
