Great video. I’m looking at buying the alp kit soloist as we are going to do the adrians wall walk this summer. Would love to see a video where you show what’s in your pack for a three day camping hike as it would be very helpful for my forthcoming trek. Just subscribed. Thanks

Hi Dave really appreciated your viewpoint on these tents and liked your open and honest down to earth presentation. Thank you for taking the time to create and publish this video. I have the Soloist xl and aspire to owning a Hilleberg Soulo too. Im 6ft 3 so it is always a squeeze in these tents.

Many thanks Matthew. The soloist is a great little tent. Soulo is great too but not really necessary most of the time in the UK. It’s also very heavy for a one person tent, especially when carrying into the mountains. ATB - Dave

Great little video. I just bought the Alpkit soloist xl, comes end of month hopefully. Can't wait to get out in the peaks once lockdowns lifted. I've been using Tarptent scarp2 which I ordered from the US which is bomb proof but its a 2manner and silver ( not great camouflage) ! Anyway, happy camping. 👍

Just come across this vid Dave. I am looking into the Alpkit soloist . I am a Soulo fan like you but fancy something a bit lighter to do the Pennine way. Also notice that you are not a million miles from me if you can see that Tower from your back garden. I thought your vocal tones sounded very familiar :). Good review, whats your thoughts now after owning it a couple of years ???? Have you used it much ???

    • @TheSoloSummiteer
      @TheSoloSummiteer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Cheers Olan. Love the little soloist. Used it a lot last year. Disadvantage is it’s quite small so not much room for cooking etc inside the tent. I tend to use it when it’s good weather and I can spend most of my time outside of the tent. I’ve got quite a few videos of me using it so might be worth you checking them out. All the best - Dave

@@TheSoloSummiteer Thanks Dave.....i have ordered the Helm compact 2 its only 200 quid and lots more room so i don't have to over think my tent organising situation because of the extra room. The soulo is to me my safe space go to tent when the winds pick up but i just feel that as a 4 season masterpiece it would lend itself to 3 seasons in our uk damp humid climate if it had something in the way of an air vent on the opposite side of the roof vent but in a different place to cater for a flue effect. I am certain it wouldn't add much weight and would improve its performance and comfort level dramatically ....You should put one of those buy me a coffee things on your site Dave just because its so worth watching your vids and when you consider what it costs to watch BBC verbal excrement its so worth it.

Excellent comparison, can’t beat actually seeing tent and how it goes up.
I alway prefer a solid inner with a lose outer, makes for a far better nights sleep, no flapping about. But nightmare to put up in bad weather.
I’ve the Alpkit Zhota as a “family” tent and it’s bomb proof (with a footprint).. but let down by poor elastic cord in poles.

Hi Dave. Hope you are feeling better after operation. I just came across this video of tents comparison, after recently subscribing to your channel.
For me, one obvious drawback of the pitch as one tent, so common here in the UK, is that the inner just basically “hangs there” . Slight exaggeration I know, but such a design lends itself to noisy flapping of material in any kind of wind . This I suggest is less of an issue even in a budget tent like your Alpkit?
Anyway, as I mentioned recently, I think your passion for the hills is obvious and is motivating me at 70, to get out more.
    Best wishes

I’m struggling a bit with my latest purchase from MLD but I’m determined to get it right because I do love the tent .
Once again thanks for your comments. Take care and all the best - Dave

Again thank you for a comprehensive review of your two tents. I’ve seen so many people with the Suolo, it’s very popular. If I were buying now, I would most definitely go for a Hilleberg, they are so highly rated by users. I can’t find an valid excuse though, 🙁 😀 because my 20 year old Ultra Quasar is still going strong. It’s from the good old days when Terra Nova stuff was all made in the UK. To be fair, the fly is looking a bit iffy in places but it still doesn’t let the rain in. I did consider buying a replacement fly but the current Quasar is smaller. It’s now a 2 person, whereas when I bought mine it was a 2/3 person, so the new fly doesn’t fit. It weighs in at about 3.2kg without its various bags. The only bag I carry is the one with the pegs. It sleeps two of us in real comfort with plenty of space for our rucsacs, boots, etc. inside. I don’t like to cook inside the tent but there is plenty of room to do so in the vestibule if absolutely necessary and with two vestibules there’s always an emergency exit (hopefully this is never going to be an issue). Here in the Cairngorms, strong winds and rough weather are normal, so a sturdy four season tent with plenty of space are my two top criteria and I’ll carry a bit of extra weight to have these. One of the frequently cited drawbacks of a totally freestanding tent such as the Quasar is that you have to put it up inner first. What I’ve found over time though is that with practice you can put the inner and outer up together. That’s definitely a two person job though, so not for solo campers. Having said all that, I do sometimes almost look forward to when the Ultra Quasar needs to be replaced, so that I can get my hands on a new Hilleberg 😀⛺️⛺️😀 Allak maybe? Thanks again, stay safe.👏👏

With your Alpkit, the guys look long so you could easily add runners to then such as t.ly/WsPk. Even if you had to fit longer guys to facilitate the runners it would make peg placement on stony ground much easier for you. Credit to you for buying what is probably the best 4 season solo tent in the world as your first choice. I have a Hilleberg Niak (t.ly/rcFc ) which replaced my worn out Terra Nova at a lower weight. I was so impressed with this that I went for their lightweight solo tent, the Enan which did very well in 40 mph winds and driving rain on a recent unofficial night out, albeit only on a 220m top.

My 24hr adventure - nice one Jonathan, I’ll check it out. I know many people are, but I’m not really a kit collector. Because I prefer to camp on mountain summits the more kit I have, the more I have to drag up a mountain. It can be bloody hard work and I think that’s why many prefer to camp at lower levels. I try to take only what I might need, in order to keep the weight down (although this is difficult in winter). Also, being solo, I can’t share kit with anyone else. I've had the Soulo but sold it, regretted it and got the Allak 2 which I prefer for the space. Alpkit also make decent kit, not hilleberg quality but budget friendly and great customer service.

Hilleberg are fantastic, Steve, but bloody expensive. Love the tent tho and have no regrets. The Soloist is a great little tent for the money.

You can adjust the guy lines on the Soloist! You've just not set up the guy rope lock correctly! That plastic thing you're using as a loop, is the adjustment 👍 as I can't attach an image to a TH-cam comment, I can't show you, but just Google it and see how you're meant to use that plastic toggle with the 3 holes in it 👍

I know you can only compare the tents you have, but it's not really fair to compare a 11-odd quid 3 season tent with an 600-800 quid 4 season tent other than to say "Is the Hilleberg 6 to 8 times better than the Alpkit", and that's definitely a subjective question.
Having said that, my subjective response would be what I think yours would be; Alpkit on a small budget and be picky about camping conditions & pitch, Hilleberg if your budget is much bigger, be a lot less picky and save weight elsewhere, both if you can afford it.
Anyway. I shall stop rambling other than to say, nice vid and the pictures are awesome.

11 quid? Lol. £110, I meant to say.

Glad you enjoyed it, Andy 👍. I’m no tent snob. Alpkit is a great little tent, but I wouldn’t want to be on top of a mountain, in winter, in it. Likewise no point dragging a Hilleberg out in nice conditions. Horses for courses. ATB - Dave

@@TheSoloSummiteer Exactly! I wouldn't want to be doing a ten day hike in decent conditions, carrying an extra kilo I didn't need and sleeping in a tent that was far too warm.
I'd also much prefer to be in a Suolo if the weather turned eventful.
You pays your money and you makes your choice.

Sure. It’s all about matching the tent to your own requirements. Like I said in the video, I’m no expert, it’s all relatively new to me. Happy to hear the thoughts of others more experienced 👍. Always learning 😁
