Kewpee Hamburgers, Second Oldest Burger Chain! Wendy's Inspiration?

Join me and check out Kewpee Hamburger for a treat! We sample a burger and a thick chocolate malt from alleged Wendy's inspiration. Kewpee Hamburgers located in Lima, Ohio! Rumor has it that Dave Thomas was seen, notebook in hand at the original Kewpees. He is also quoted as saying Kewpee inspired him en.wikipedia.o... ! The two establishments do have several things in common. From the square, never frozen beef patties, to sides of chili and a very thick chocolate malt or 'frosty'. You be the judge!
Kewpee is the second oldest chain of hamburger fast-food restaurants in the United States - second only to White Castle's. Kewpee was founded in 1923 in Flint, Michigan under the name Kewpee Hotel Hamburgs. There are currently five Kewpee locations serving the Midwest. Three of those locations are in Lima, Ohio as well as one location in Lansing, Michigan and the other in Racine, Wisconsin. Kewpee's current headquarters is located in Lima, Ohio, in an art deco gem which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The chain is named after the Kewpie doll.
The locals all know their theme song, Kewpee Hamburg, Pickle on Top! Makes Your Heart go Flippity Flop! Thanks to Scott and Tracy for performing it for us.
For decades, Kewpee Hamburgers have retained their original square shape and are made from fresh, locally sourced beef, which is never frozen. There is always a long line snaking around the block morning and night in their drive thru line. After all, they were one of the first fast food chains to offer curbside service, and later a drive through! In fact, their original location even sported a mechanized car turntable which revolved to spin each car toward the exit in their originally tiny lot. Removed long ago when the lot was increased, you can still see where the turntable used to spin!
Kewpee's menu features hamburgers, cheeseburgers double cheeseburgers, and a fish sandwich. They are also known for their french fries, chili and frosted malts. In addition to daily, fresh made burger patties, they also feature a variety of freshly baked pies.

Love Kewpee, it’s a local institution and brings back so many found memories of Saturday’s with my grandparents. It was also grandpa’s last request for a meal when he was in the hospital, every-bodies grand-daddy in the area definitely ate there.

I lived in Lima from 1991-1994 while I attended college at The University of Findlay. After graduation, I moved to Cincinnati, and still currently reside there, but I travel back to Lima several times a year just to get a Kewpee burger. I'm addicted. When I was asked to describe Kewpee burgers by my friends, I always used Wendy burgers as a comparison because they were the closest example I could think of (and this was before I found out that Kewpee inspired Dave Thomas to create the Wendy's franchise). I LOVE Kewpee hamburgers, and Lima Land has a true hidden gem. If you find yourself in the area, definitely check it out!

I've eaten at Kewpee many times and think they are the best tasting of any burger places. They ground their own beef every morning and the beef is gotten from Keystone Meats, not all that far from Kewpee east. There are actually 3 Kewpee locations in Lima.

Great video Cashew with the history lesson. Kewpee has very good burgers. I have never been to the downtown location, only the east location. My girls don't like it there, they find the dolls to be creepy. You got to talk to Scott about his choice of clothing when he's in your videos, lol. There are so many great places to eat in Lima, makes me miss working over there.

Kewpee burgers are ground fresh daily. The fries are deep fried in beef tallow. Can't get a better burger, fries and malt. My son has worked there the last 14 years.
