Pyro has patched the game to work on windows 10 via Steam!! Thank you!
This is the tutorial fix for those having the steam version of commandos Behind Enemy Lines. Just like the GOG Version. Beyond the call of duty don't seem to have any issues running on Windows 10.
To fix, Rename Comandos.exe to Commandos.exe
Run CMD As Admin.
Locate Installed Dir in CMD
Type mklink comandos.exe commandos.exe - เกม

I could proceed with all the steps as described in the video. However, after trying to launch the game once the mklink command (in cmd) did add the new "comandos.exe" file in the game's folder, I still cannot start the game via my Steam library, as the same annoying error message "I CAN NOTFIND DIRECTX 5" keeps popping up. Any ideas...?
Hey, I'm on windows 7, and my commandos beyond the enemy line is lauching without this direct x 5 issues, but the screen freez on the comando screen and the audio of video is lauching but nothing happend. When I tried your solution in the video, when I copy past the link for the folder, after I whrote cd "space" " link..." nothing happen. It's just written C:\Windows\System32>. Maybe bcz my steam is on the f disc ? Can you help me plz

hey man thanks for the video. but after doing the what you mentioned in the video I am still not able to play the game. The screen freezes and I am able to hear the music in the background. I am not able to play the game at all. Do you have any suggestions ?

I bought the Commandos collection on Steam back in March and everything worked okay then except that Commandos 3 was in such a low resolution (which I've heard is a common issue).
I haven't played any of the Commandos games since, but between then and now, I have bought A LOT of other games on Steam and GoG that have probably automatically made changes to my video card when I loaded them up the first time.
Tonight, I tried to play Commandos and every one of the games in the collection (including the 3rd) are all confined to a very small window with a lot of black screen all around them. Changing the resolution in the game does not affect the dimensions of the screen. (The characters are so small, I can't play the game.) I noticed that it seems like when I see flashes of my desktop during loading that my whole computer screen has been reduced down in size.
As I said, I suspect that one or more of the games I've bought in the interim changed some settings on my computer's video card and is now causing this problem with the Commandos games. I tried uninstalling Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and reinstalling but it did not fix the issue. I also tried changing my main desktop resolution from 1920x1080 down to 1680x1050 to match the maximum resolution of the games but that did not have any effect.
Finally, I tried this fix, but it still didn't work., which isn't too surprising since it is a problem on all three games plus the expansion.

I worked through this change and it worked as instructed but did not fix my issue in Windows 10. After the intro screen, the video freezes and I can still hear the music as if the game is in the main menu but I can't see anything. Either it is black if I let the whole intro video play, or if I hit escape to skip the videos it usually just freezes whatever was showing when I hit ESC and then goes to the menu music with a frozen screen. Do you know any way to fix this? I have the integrated intel 3000 video card which I had seen was not causing any issues.

The system itself has directx 12, but I downloaded different versions of DirectX, but it didn't work, I even reinstalled the game with different installation files, but it still gave errors.

Hi im sorry to bother you. I bought the game yesterday on steam. I have windows 10 64 beat. But apparently what you did it's now the "legacy version" of the game, and what you did worked just fine. The root version crashes when i want to start it so there is no way to initiate it through steam unless it is the legacy version. Would yo know what should i do? Thank you!

Hi there the game works fine for me but at the last bit where you show gameplay ive noticed you have the exact same problem as me or situation anyway.
The thing im talking about is when you play the game at the last bit and scroll the mouse around the map, the refresh rate is not smooth is this normal for the game to be like this because i cantr remember it was like that when i played it about 8-10 years ago. For example wwhen you scroll the mouse around the map the buildings and trees are like stuttering/lagging.
I have this problem with the game and it actually causes a mild form of motion sickness for me, im not sure if this is how the game is supposed to be but i dont recall it doing this to me back when i played it on a old system. Im using a windows 10 64 bit system aswell.
I even tried it on my old WIndows 7 64 bit pc with a gtx580 and had the same problem.

ugh, I have done this and it still does not work. When I first installed the game it would launch but crash after the first logo, I have tried a couple things and reinstalled it a bunch of times but now its only giving me the directx 5 problem.

what if dont have steam folder on my disc???
i am typing cd and the paste the directory address and press enter and doesnt change directory (still C:windows/system32>)
add this to cd ----> "/D"
for example in my case i have to write:
cd /D B:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Commandos Behind Enemy Lines\Legacy
then it changes directory!

If you have two graphics cards on your system, disable on of them from Device Manager. In my case my laptop has two GPUs; Intel and Nvidia. I've disabled Intel and it works, no Direct X 5 error anymore.
+Emin Akbulut yeah..laptop always will have complications. but I've found out that playing games while using the power adapter will automatically run the game with Nvidia GPU. If ur power adapter is not attached to the laptop, all applications will run with intel instead...well at least that's for my case...

Im running it on macbook pro 1800p bootcamp windows 10. Problem is the screen is fucked up, shows 2/3 of the screen and the bottom right u cannot see. Doesnt matter if i change resolution or no, everything stays the same. Do you know fix for this or way to run it window mode?

Hey - Update; I fixed the permissions... And ran the game from my PC desktop AND within Steam... It still won't go full screen... The interface/game only takes up about half the screen... :(

ensure that after u have started the game, the shortcut, comandos is created in the installation directory
+Fix Ya Games It first created some file that was not a shortcut but had it's name... Deleted it and done averything again and finally it created the shortcut.

It is at your steam folder. C:\program files (x86)\steam\common. If u can't find steam, make sure u have installed steam.

Steam is a free client where u purchase digital games. After installing it. U need to create an account. Its a worldwide Service. But u need to buy the game from steam. store.steampowered.com/

uninstall steam, and reinstall. Upon reinstalling make sure u set steam to default installation directory.

I just downloaded steam and this game last night (still having problems after this fix) but I was able to do everything in this video. My steam folder got put in my programs (x86) folder which is right next to my programs folder. I go to This PC==>Local Disc C: Drive==>programs(x86)

jupp, i do it exactly like in the video and get all shortcuts but still have the Direct X 5 error
if i create the shortcut and switsch the resoultion down the 800x600 i get the error: "This is the international version of Commandos. Please run the german version of this computer." i´m from germany btw :)
