The whole movie is about a middle aged girl going through changes. The movie isn’t for everybody. I personally I like it and I’m a grown straight guy who understands that it’s meant to be cringey and uncomfortable because it’s about a 13 year old girl, a weird transition in life. - I is Priya, Priya is me. - You know alot of people got in a hissy fit when this movie came out because of the "uncomfortable " topics (female puberty) or how it was sexualising little girls who in real life aren't like that. Meanwhile most women were like "uhh, not like that? at 13 my room was just wall to wall boy bands and hot teen celebrities. What are y'all talking about?"
Faaaacts, the truth is it's OKAY for teen girls to be sexual, it's not okay for grown adults to take advantage of them. A lot of teens especially girls are shamed for being sexual when it's normal, parents are just trying to protect them from predator adults 😢
For real! People clearly forgot the rivalry of BSB and *NSYNC fans It’s was legit 💁🏽♀️ There’s nothing about this film that doesn’t resemble what I was like at 13, except maybe turning into a panda, can’t relate 😄
@@ravenm6443I saw *NSYNC in concert when I was 13 and me and my friends had binoculars and were trying to see the guys’ bulges in their baggy silver pants 😭
Yeah! When I was 13, I grew curious about NSFW+ things and would watch shirtless k-pop idols dance to their music and read smut fanfics, but than I grew out of that cringy hot and bother teen when I turned of age. It's completely normal! All girls sill go through that stage and because it's mostly MEN who hate the movie, they actually don't mature any better than we do, so it's a "them" problem 😂
I feel like so much of why this movie didn't get a big reception was becuase people thought it was cringey. But hello??? This was TRUE to the 13-year-old experience. We were all painfully cringe at that age 😭Also!!! all the boy band songs were written by Billie Eilish and her brother!!!! that's why they were so good ;w;
Also fun fact, I was at the recieving end of a boyband pick-me-up as a young teenager. I broke my arm during basketball practise and one of my friends got down on the floor with me and started playing One Direction videos to cheer me up while we waited for my mom to come get me. If you want to know how realistic the depiction of young girls are lmao
This movie has my heart. The characters. The unique animation The soundtrack. The Pixar generational trauma. The self actualization. And happy Pride!!!!
Due to my upbringing and who I am, this movie always makes me cry. The bit with Ming breaking down because of how she was raised and her resentment towards her mother but also the guilt of hurting her, because she loves her mother, hits close to home. And especially since Ming's mum does seem to love her, and want the best for her. She's not good at showing it, nor is she going about it in the right way, but her intention is always to do what's best for Ming. Ming is the same. And it really hurts to think that being who you are will hurt those you love.
This movie was definitely a love letter to young tween Asian immigrants. The whole thing of the mom not liking Miriam was so relatable cause my mom randomly disapproved of my friends for no reason. She just looked down on them in general. I always felt like I had to prove that they were good friends or hardly mentioned my best friends. She still does it to this day so I never talk about my friends to her 😭
As a female millennial and someone who was with an Asian immigrant, this movie went HARD. The throwbacks of boybands and Tamagotchis, and dealing with puberty... to the things my Ex had instilled in him (that I concurrently learned about) touched on a very specific time and healed things that I didnt know were hurt. I dont understand the hate that this movie received. Regardless of gender or nationality/ethnicity we all, deep down, want to please out parents and make them proud. Plus, we were all horrifffically awkward as teens, and this movie fully shows that. Also- forgot to mention, this really drives home how important our friends are when dealing with live changes. Her friends are amazing, and what I thankfully had growing up, and hope that my potential children will have. Its shapes who they will become.
literally my all time favorite pixar film. So unique, and I relate to it so much. You should watch the behind the scenes to this film. You'd learn things like how Billie Eilish wrote the boyband songs. Or how Park Jimin was the inspo behind Taeyoung in 4 town. The artbook shows how Priya was supposed to have a crush on the goth chic in the party, or how Tyler is implied to be gay. I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS FILM FOREVER.
Also my favorite detail of this film is when the aunties are talking to each other after meimei ran to go to the concert, It directly parallels Meimei in the convinience store as strangers talked about her
i remember when the trailers for this movie were coming out, i got really excited because one of the girls at their school (the one who comes out of the bathroom stall and sees mei) is a type one diabetic! you can see her pump/sensor on her arms, which was such a nice detail because i never see other type ones shown in media (especially animation or kids shows)
That scene with Devon getting yelled at by Mei's mom had me goin wild. I was curling in on myself from embarrassment for Mei AND Devon. Dude was just trying to finish his night shift fr 😭
i just took a whole class on like adolescence and the stresses that come with puberty and i really think turning red is also such a good depiction of the stress of puberty, transitioning into your own self and identity while also feeling embarrassed about change. like it’s so well done!! so glad you liked it!!
I think ‘inside out 2’ did better job with doing a general understanding of puberty and the psychological effects that comes with it. “Turning Red” is about the physical changes of puberty but you have to be a girl to truly understand what Mei is going through, through her Red Panda transformation to relate because guys goes through puberty differently. Im a guy and only can relate to the 2000s setting and what was like having fun with friends during middle school! I guess the crushes also can relate with boys but with the opposite sex or if you’re gay, boys I guess. I got hit many times during middle school by girls. Let me tell you, middle girls don’t hide their feelings well. They can be overly excited and over dramatic with their reactions from seeing a boy that’s attractive to them “Oh my God you’re so cute”! So this movie betrays that perfectly.
turning red and puss in boots were the only movies i saw in the theaters last year, both made me cry and laugh. It was just me alone, a 20yo in a theater full of kids, sobbing😂 memories were made
I took it as Tyler being mean to Mei because he was jealous that she could so openly be herself at school and he couldn't, what with being a 4Town fan.
I like that the side Characters in this movie have their own story that is sorta Visible sometimes when u pay attention to it. Besides Tyler is actually my fav character lol- he seemed to be quite lonely, probably seen as a weirdo. So he hid that and when he saw how Mei was like him and even showed it so proudly he was jealous of her confidence. Could also be that other people who saw Mei as a weirdo then sided with him wich made him continue cuz he didn't wanna be lonely. Kids/teenagers do questionable things to protect themselves in some way uk. Hecc some adults do that too- alot of them probably.
This is one of my fav movies..and I hate the amount of people who say this movie is too "MATURE" for kids..like no??? I am tired of puberty being seen as a "Grown up" topic when it happens at a young age..
Great great Canadian film. Set in Canada, written and directed by a Canadian, reflecting the Canadian immigrant experience, and produced in the US. Bloody typical. Co-written and directed by Domee Shi, who wrote a brilliant short called Bao, and served in the animation department on Inside Out.
this movie had me CRACKING TF UP lmaooo i was born in ‘97 so this wasn’t necessarily my experience but the cringey pre-teen/teen phase is so real, i look back on that era with fondness bc i was growing and learning what i liked and yeah it was weird but who cares lol and mei is so unapologetically her and i love that
Great film! The 4-Town music was so perfect and then I saw that the voice of Jesse from the band was Finneas O'Connell, Billie Eilish's brother, and I'm like OH that explains why it's so good, Finneas co-wrote the songs!
4*Town always reminded me of O-Town, including their sound. But the creator/director said they were inspired by all the boy bands of the 90s/00s lol. There’s also quite a bit of lore around their name and the formation of the band, including the fact that they’re a parallel to Mei’s friendship group (started as 4, added a 5th member).
I fricken love this film so much, I think people get the wrong idea and thought red panda = period but no, her mom just thought that until she realized it was the panda. Such a good movie though and watching this with my own 7 year old daughter makes me cry EVERY TIME 😂❤
I relate to this family dynamic so hard I weep, this is a go to cry movie for me, and honestly so healing for the childhood internalized misogyny seeing a supportive girl freind group being unabashedly themselves
I love this movie! I’m a grown man and I have no shame to say that I really enjoyed the movie and the early 2000s setting really gives me nostalgia despite the movie coming out a few years ago.’Turning Red’ might not be the deepest of the Pixar’s movies but there’s nothing wrong with that. The simple slice of life story of a girl having fun with her friends and struggles of growing up and changing through her red panda is nice. Sometimes we need a break and just watch simple relatable story. I can’t relate much with the changes that comes with puberty and the boy band obsession because I’m a guy but I can relate to some things in a way. Also don’t tell me the ending with Mei’s mother isn’t emotional 😭
I LOVE this film! My dad was so betrayed that I watched it without him since red pandas are one of his favourite animals lmao so I rewatched it with him and he loved it too
NIALL!!! you don’t know how healing seeing you react to this movie was. As a Chinese girl this movie was so important to me, and I was devastated seeing the negative reactions to it when it first came out. Those critiques were upset that the film talked about the experiences of a tween girl, which was “unrelatable” and “too over the top”. Thank you for bringing such a positive and open minded attitude to it!
The movie concept and directing was by the same person. (I don't remember her name). It's based on her life growing up in Toronto as an Asian girl who wanted to break tradition as an animator instead of what her family wanted for her. That's why it's in 2002 in Toronto
I'll never understand the people who criticize this movie simply because they "can't relate" to it! I remember I made this comparison for a class: People don't watch Star Wars or Lord of the Rings because they're a Jedi or a Hobbit. They watch it for the story it tells and how the characters face and handle conflict! Even if you can't relate to certain aspects of a character, their struggles are human.
fun facts ! miriam is trans ! they wanted to express it more but ofc- disney wouldnt allow it. the girl priya was dancing with was a gay moment ! and this movie was entirely made by women !
@@mebroflovskis source? i looked it up and found nothing. like a headcanon on twitter from two years ago, and some posts discussing the entire movie as a trans allegory (mei's panda) on reddit. there's one tiktok i saw saying that miriam was trans (also from 2 years ago) and that they were shocked when they found out, but it's just in the caption of a clip showing priya and goth girl dancing. they don't mention a source either...??? like can i get a link or an interview to look up or something??? or even a to social media post from someone who worked on the film??? i wanna believe this but i don't wanna start rejoicing over a headcanon.

26:49 I hate it when parents say stuff like that lol, like just because you never did fun things it doesn’t mean your kid can’t do fun things. Also I WISH 4 town had more screen time, their voices are so amazing.
It breaks my heart when people try to label this movie as "The period movie" because the message is so much more than that. As you said, there's so many messages you can take from the movie that "eww little girl gets her period" is such a small minded view.
8:13 I love how prepared Mei's mother is despite putting a ton of pressure on her at this point in the movie. She didn't ignore Mei snapping at her, but she also didn't harp on her about it and steered her attention towards making sure she wasn't in pain. My mother didn't even know about the _concept_ of periods before her first one and straight-up thought she was dying, so I very much enjoy seeing parents in popular media being supportive like they should. -I don't get why so many people aren't okay with this movie. Wouldn't you want kids to not freak out when they're shedding the lining of an organ?- Also 8:16 is so real. Even though I'm an adult, my mom still buys a bunch of different brands to bring me as if she's the Santa of pads. 😭
This movie takes place in 2002, miss opportunity to not have a finding Nemo coming to theaters advertisement in the background as an easter egg! That movie came out around 2003.
Fun Fact: The 25.05.2002 is my birthday! It was so special for me to notice it watching the movie. I wonder if that day in real life there was also a red moon 🤔
YESSS, I just subbed to you yesterday, and I'm so glad I get to see your reaction to one of my favorite recent pixar films. I literally had just finished watching your Encanto reaction when I saw you posted this.
I'm so happy this movie exists, man. Young boys and girls can watch it and feel seen. I definitely feel like my younger self would've been obsessed by the cute style and story. I feel seen, too. This movie and Barbie definitely speak to the girl/woman experience.
"What has she got against miriam?" Note how Miriam is the only non-asian member of Mei's friend group. Priya is Indian, Abby is Korean and Mei is Chinese, all from Asia (ethnically of course since they were all born in Canada) and Miriam is the only white girl in the group. That's why she's being singled out by Mei's mom.
i absolutely love this movie so much! especially the soundtrack lol i still listen to it all the time. makes sense because billie and finneas wrote the 4TOWN songs and Jordan Fisher voices Robaire
I’m a sucker for any movies dealing with mother daughter relationships tbh especially when you feel like you have to be perfect for your mom or afraid to upset her. I feel like I relate to that more than ones who just straight up start rebelling tbh.
So much fuuuun !!! Love this movie and your reaction ! If you continue the animation route, especially with you talking about the evolution of animation, Blue Eye Samouraï would be AMAZING. It’s a Netflix animated series and really took my breath away visually, with its story and characters. No pressure of course, do whatever you like but I really recommend it ❤ love of love for you and your work. LOVE your editing ! Excited to see what you do next 🫶
Fun fact: when Mei gets scared in her Panda form, she throws both hands in the air. This is something real Red Pandas do when startled to appear more threatening to other animals.
I'm also so glad animation is becoming more eccentric!! The medium of animation allows us to show expressions and physics we couldnt do in real life. The Mitchells VS The Machines really pushed these boundaries too!!!
4*Town's songs were written by Billie Eilish and Phineas O'Connell, and Phineas also sings for one of the guys in the group; I forget which one. Writer/Director Domee Shi based the scene where her mother is hiding behind a tree outside the classroom on an incident from her own life, although thankfully her mother did not wave a box of feminine hygiene products in the air when she did it! Shi had just won an Oscar for her short film Bao, which was about dumplings, so the scenes where Meilin is eating dumplings were classic Pixar self-referential wink-nudge. Shi said her own parents were always supportive of her dream to become an artist and animator, but she also knew a lot of classmates whose parents were all, "Go to medical school! Go to law school!" so Ming's attitude reflects this.
You should watch A Goofy Movie next so you get the boy teen “parents are really… Goofy and ugh dad go away so I can impress a girl” movie after seeing the teen girl upgraded twist. Technically Max is 15 or 16 so he’s older but similar plot of teen-parent angst and is also a fantastic movie. I think both are perfect bookends of each other- Turning Red’s crew grew up with Goofy Movie and said “we need a girl version of this!! Merida took us some of the way but not all of the way through teen awkwardness. Periods. Mom pressure. Add in cultural issues!”

@@christyre6742Yeah Tangled was my real wake-up call too hahah. That movie honestly helped a lot of people recognize and get out of those kinds of toxic relationships. Disney is great like that, they make awesome films that become so comforting, and they pack them full of such important life messages that are applicable to all ages. So awesome
"I accept and embrace all labels."
TOTAL MOOD!!!
actually iconic tbh
For real! People clearly forgot the rivalry of BSB and *NSYNC fans
It’s was legit 💁🏽♀️
There’s nothing about this film that doesn’t resemble what I was like at 13, except maybe turning into a panda, can’t relate 😄
me and my friends would literally read smutty fanfics online at 13 😭😭 it's definitely normal
All girls sill go through that stage and because it's mostly MEN who hate the movie, they actually don't mature any better than we do, so it's a "them" problem 😂
as someone with repressed emotions about not feeling good enough for their parents, the scene in the climax had me sobbing
Hope you’re okay 😭❤️
@@niallnochill things are better now lol i meant when i first watched this in 2022
The fact mums of girls were so against and protested the scene where mei’s mom is prepared and comes in with sanitary products baffles me😂😭
The fact that Niall has a necklace super similar to Devon makes this so much funnier.
Hahahaha!
I feel like so much of why this movie didn't get a big reception was becuase people thought it was cringey. But hello??? This was TRUE to the 13-year-old experience. We were all painfully cringe at that age 😭Also!!! all the boy band songs were written by Billie Eilish and her brother!!!! that's why they were so good ;w;
Awww
This movie has my heart. The characters. The unique animation The soundtrack. The Pixar generational trauma. The self actualization. And happy Pride!!!!
for real about the animation, like this movie looks very different from other Pixar films
26:26 “okay maybe not period 💅🏼..UNPERIOD! UNPERIOD!!” 😂😂
literally my all time favorite pixar film.
Also my favorite detail of this film is when the aunties are talking to each other after meimei ran to go to the concert, It directly parallels Meimei in the convinience store as strangers talked about her
i remember when the trailers for this movie were coming out, i got really excited because one of the girls at their school (the one who comes out of the bathroom stall and sees mei) is a type one diabetic! you can see her pump/sensor on her arms, which was such a nice detail because i never see other type ones shown in media (especially animation or kids shows)
I will ALWAYS tear up at 27:51 😭 the feeling of not being good enough for a parent is so stressful
god man "I'm so sick of being perfect I'll never be good enough for her" that broke me 😭
That scene with Devon getting yelled at by Mei's mom had me goin wild.
There's actually an official music video where Tyler displays that exact jealousy
This is one of my fav movies..and I hate the amount of people who say this movie is too "MATURE" for kids..like no??? I am tired of puberty being seen as a "Grown up" topic when it happens at a young age..
Imma say it again. Billie Eilish, Finneas, and Jordan Fisher created practical perfection with the 4*Town music. I still listen to it all the time.
now i need a luca and soul reaction
Omg he NEEDS to see Luca
wow, I thought he _must_ have already reacted to luca... definitely would love to see a reaction from him 👀
YES PLEASE
REAL
Great great Canadian film. Set in Canada, written and directed by a Canadian, reflecting the Canadian immigrant experience, and produced in the US. Bloody typical. Co-written and directed by Domee Shi, who wrote a brilliant short called Bao, and served in the animation department on Inside Out.
this movie had me CRACKING TF UP lmaooo i was born in ‘97 so this wasn’t necessarily my experience but the cringey pre-teen/teen phase is so real, i look back on that era with fondness bc i was growing and learning what i liked and yeah it was weird but who cares lol and mei is so unapologetically her and i love that
I love this movie and I love niall !!!!
i adore you!!!!
Such a good movie though and watching this with my own 7 year old daughter makes me cry EVERY TIME 😂❤
6:58 "I would nae survive" I love when your Scottish comes out haha
My ancestors are Scottish, and the name Niall means "man of iron" in Scots-Celt.
This is probably my favorite Pixar movie from the past 3 years
I LOVE this film! My dad was so betrayed that I watched it without him since red pandas are one of his favourite animals lmao so I rewatched it with him and he loved it too
Mei’s dad is a prince among men. He’s so good
NIALL!!! you don’t know how healing seeing you react to this movie was.
Yes, squishy! You're the first reactor to mention it, thank you!
I was born and raised in Toronto and currently live in area where the SkyDome (renamed the Rogers Centre) and this movie makes me so happy
When he called mom a kaiju I was hollering 😂😂😂
fun facts ! miriam is trans ! they wanted to express it more but ofc- disney wouldnt allow it. the girl priya was dancing with was a gay moment ! and this movie was entirely made by women !
Wait what!!!!!! Miriam is trans . How did I not know this 🤩
@@GabrielleBraswell she’s mtf ! it’s so sweet that they even wanted to make her trans in the first place and rly brings more to the movie once u know
@@mebroflovskis I know it made me so happy when I found out. I'm glad lgbtqia+ are getting some recognition 😁
Omg Ming disliking Miriam suddenly hits different 😭
Aww man this reaction made me CRYY I was a moment away from openly sobbing until u said "who's payin for the damages"🤧😂🤣 snapped me right outt! Hahaha this was lovely, deff rewatching this reaction on a tough day, cuz it was the perfect start to my day✨
26:49 I hate it when parents say stuff like that lol, like just because you never did fun things it doesn’t mean your kid can’t do fun things.
Also I WISH 4 town had more screen time, their voices are so amazing.
4 Town are the true heroes in this movie..they just decided to help them!?
I never had a big boy band phase growing up, but I was really into songs from the 90s. I had an old soul. This movie honestly relates to me XD
Wouldn't you want kids to not freak out when they're shedding the lining of an organ?-
Also 8:16 is so real. Even though I'm an adult, my mom still buys a bunch of different brands to bring me as if she's the Santa of pads. 😭
Telling a teenage girl to not express big emotions (ESPECIALLY AS A TEENAGER) is like telling a pregnant women not to give birth
This movie takes place in 2002, miss opportunity to not have a finding Nemo coming to theaters advertisement in the background as an easter egg! That movie came out around 2003.
"this GENERATIONAL TRAUMA" - aaaaand there u go
9:10 Reminds me of SpongeBob in that episode of "Not Normal" and starts saying: "hey, how are ya." :)
11:12 Awooga 😂
Fun Fact: The 25.05.2002 is my birthday! It was so special for me to notice it watching the movie. I wonder if that day in real life there was also a red moon 🤔
Turning Red is my fave Pixar film in YEARS
30 seconds into the film and I almost died from cringe.
Best near death experience ever!!! 😂
11:20 That’s where the line gets drawn at😂😂😂💀. Also I definitely would’ve broken when they brought the kittens out 🩵🥹🥹
Mitchell's vs the Machines (netflix) is such a good one for this sort of look and vibe. I liked it anyway.
Abby for life haha!
YESSS, I just subbed to you yesterday, and I'm so glad I get to see your reaction to one of my favorite recent pixar films. I literally had just finished watching your Encanto reaction when I saw you posted this.
I can relate to Mei, my mom’s protective as well and also doesn’t like my best friend Leilani and thinks she’s trouble even though she’s nice :(
I'm so happy this movie exists, man. Young boys and girls can watch it and feel seen.
I definitely feel like my younger self would've been obsessed by the cute style and story. I feel seen, too. This movie and Barbie definitely speak to the girl/woman experience.
I loved Barbie.
First!!! I love this movie so much, Mei is so relatable. Also I love boy band music so there’s that too
Any rare bit of love this movie get is so GREAT! Thank you so much
"What has she got against miriam?" Note how Miriam is the only non-asian member of Mei's friend group. Priya is Indian, Abby is Korean and Mei is Chinese, all from Asia (ethnically of course since they were all born in Canada) and Miriam is the only white girl in the group. That's why she's being singled out by Mei's mom.
binging your videos and crying my heart out 😭
The fact Boys In Motion was put in so seamlessly made me cackle
i absolutely love this movie so much! especially the soundtrack lol i still listen to it all the time. makes sense because billie and finneas wrote the 4TOWN songs and Jordan Fisher voices Robaire
"Mon amour!" 😂😊

I wish more people reacted to this! It's SUCH a good movie, I watched it a few times the first week it came out cause I loved it so much
I think the movie I set in the early 2000s.
One of my favorite Pixar movies 😍😍
Thanks for reacting 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
You're most welcome!! Hope you enjoyed
The music is by Billie Eilish and her brother, and her brother is a member of the band.
This is a great movie. It's so funny and emotional. Mei Mei's mother is an overprotective mother. I love your reaction
🐼🐼🐼🔥🔥🔥🥹🥹🥹🤣🤣🤣
I LOVE this movie so much! My favorite easter egg is how when she poofs into the panda around her friends the smoke is heart shaped ❤
When Pixar has 'real' music in it then it's diegetic - the music is heard by the characters, in context.
_Please_ tell me you caught the aftercredits bit of the dad getting down to 4town
Loved this! 🦊
liked for bringing back boys in motion LOL memories FLOODED back into my mind~~~
17:00 It's definitely a newer gen movie! With female director we're getting more new takes
Also 4town song was written by Billie Eilish and Finneas (her brother)
I love a goofy movie it’s so underrated
8:10 well yes! I don’t think the creators have ever confirmed that but it’s pretty obvious 😂
As someone whose been homeless i lost it at the ida that the best nights sleep you'll ever get is in the rain- BYE that shit is helll.... but coming in from being in the rain???? bliss
THE AUNTS' ENTRANCE HAD ME GAGGED FR😭
@ 21:43 look closely and you can see that Mei gave a scratch on Tyler's face!
17:47 100%! Love a boy band parody/homage 😊
