Hi Gretl, Bakwitan came from the Ilonggo word “Bakwit” which is short and Filipinized word of the English word “evacuate.” So Bakwitan means a place where you can take refuge after fleeing from something. Incidentally i was born just across Isla de Gigantes, on the mainland of Panay. I literally see Gigantes every morning from my room while growing up in the Philippines.

That secluded water was so clear and blue before but became murky that’s why they had to close it to tourists for a while..
