A few moments that I love from this video... seeing Prince walk onstage behind the Revolution made such a huge statement for him, which continued throughout his career (i.e. "I didn't do this by myself; I'm here to showcase the incredible talent that surrounds me; it's a blessing to be part of something larger than myself..."). And seeing Prince with his "bodyguard," his petite, womanlike frame, but he was the most dominant and masculine man in the entire world, then and always... that resonates with me. And lastly, how Wendy grabbed his hand and spoke on his and The Revolution's behalf... I thought that was incredibly touching, and showed the unbreakable bond they all shared as a band, and as good friends.
+Carolina Martucci Michael Jackson ruled the 80's he was way bigger than prince everything was Michael this Michael that, he was huge, I personally like him his songs better, I like prince but only like 5 songs where as Michael the list goes on all the way down the Jackson 5.

And btw that Thriller was still being nominated three years after it's release says enough. Michael took home 9 awards at the 1984 American music awards.

Goddamn it Prince & the Revolution were just so cool. They didn't look like no one else, they didn't sound like no one else and maybe that's because they weren't like anyone else. They were a force to be reckoned with and if I was ever in a band, I'd like to be in one like this. Absolutely amazing! If you noticed everyone in the 80s had their own style. No one was trying to be like anyone else. That's what I love about that decade man. Everyone was doing their own thing.

+Ronnie Mead True, He wasn't God, but he is a star. Our shining star and he shined brightly. And I thank him for gracing this earth with his presence. I hope his soul is playing his guitar in purple paradise.
The performers in the 80's were some of the best musicians in Popular music History. And Prince & his band proved themselves to be the best of the best during this period. Will we ever see the likes of this talent again I wonder?
Tame Impala.. Unknown Mortal Orchestra.. Grimes.. those are the three truly historical artists that we have nowadays.. in my humble opinion. Perhaps even more creative, authentic, tasteful, than a lot of the great 80's artists. On par with MJ.. with Prince.. etc.
I think only time will prove that. I am afraid we were spoilt for choice in the 80's & 90's. There was so much quality to choose from it is hard to imagine. I am afraid that certainly isn't the case nowadays. It was a fantastic time to have lived through which I wouldn't change for anything they have today.
This was the Prince I loved the most. The big white body guard , the soft voice , the eyes that wonder unconsciously through the crowd. Man Love this guy. Money don't matter tonight, Because our Prince has passed on to the next life. Were on were own.
Prince wants it done right. That's brings out the best. good intentions. my best coaches did the same. takes you to higher levels no one is familiar with. believe me I KNOW.
You can tell the only award he really cared about was the Pop award. The award didn't label his music with the color of his skin. Congrats to Prince still being one of the sexiest talented men alive and overcoming the obvious ignorance of that time and the haters.
Just for some people to understand. Thriller came out in 1982. It was incredible that it even got a nomination three years after its release. Purple Rain came out in 1984, so this was deservedly Prince's year to shine. As a long life MJ fan, Prince deserved it. Hope he and Michael are writing songs for the angels in heaven...

Amazing decade, to have songs like ‘carribean queen, what’s love got to do with it’ and ‘when doves cry’ in one category is better than the winners and contenders of the last 25 years combined alone!

The big bodyguard following the purple one was so hillarious. What fascinated me about Prince was never has such a small man become so successful in the world. Through sheer drive and talent he achieved a lot.
I remember this, Prince blew everybody away when everyone was expecting MJ to win.. We were screaming we loved him then and we did till the day he died. One in a zillion.
Maybe somebody can help me, I'm pretty sure it was on one these late 80's MTV live award shows that Prince did "Sign O' The Times live" and made everybody else look like they were at a high school battle of the bands, anybody old enough to remember back then ? I can't find the video clip anywhere, I must admit I "didn't get it" till I saw that performance, he stole the show, a true musical genius, gone well before his time, the most exciting performer I've ever seen, he could play guitar almost as good as Jimmy H and put on a live show that would make even James Brown proud.
PRINCE represents a legend to most of us who followed his career for decades. RIP handsome Prince. May you return to the loving arms of God, and may your music and persona be with us always.
Yeah cause he was a humble and humorous soul. He knew and want to acknowledge he didn't get there by himself. The Revolution, especially that female she helped rock that album and that band. I thought of her as co-pilot while Prince lead. I was born yrs later but I've come across so much music archives of Prince and the Revolution. Before he went solo he was part of a "team" So I think it's great he did that because after that album he went his own way without them and they pretty much became "dust in the wind" without him. This was pretty much their moment spotlight for the hardwork they put in.
In a time when we went back to school the next day and everybody talked about what happened on the award show. Long before the internet age. What memories.
would Eminem win? Lol legit question though. and would 20 pound Sledge ( all black rock group) win hard rock album of the year? could happen. Music is colorblind.

Jacquetta Williamson be still my heart!!! that was messed up. they really distinguished the black from the white didn't they? and prince didn't look to thrilled about it either.
Did anyone else notice how often the presenters screwed up whenever Prince was brought up in a category? They sounded like they would forget to say his name and made it obvious when they corrected themselves.
The fact that Thriller was nominated again just a year after Michael took home 8 awards, including a Merit Award at the age of 25 is a testament is a testament to Michael's impact in the 80s.

Mozart and Beethoven didn’t play Nearly as many instruments as him, on top of having Extraordinary Vocals, could dance in High Heels, or Write and Produce as many songs as he did, I mean he has an Entire Vault of Unheard music that could More than likely make ANY artist today or in the futures songs look like Complete And Utter Sh*t. brenda jackson I wrote that somewhere else. It's unreal the level of talent back then. You had to have musical talent above all else. Shame it's not the same anymore
Michael Jackson was the artist of the 80s though
@@Olly_2024_ one of the stars of the 80s not THE star of the 80s

Prince in that purple fur coat... is just beautiful!! Purple means royalty, and boy did Prince walk up on stage like the royal prince he is! In your honor a royal hand clap👏👏👏👏👏 RIP Prince!

Our Modern day Mozart, I loved him so much, he had the divine spark.
Yes. Your right. He was our, Modern day Mozart :-)
Better than Mozart, in the years to come people will be looking for the “Modern Day Prince” which I Highly Doubt ANYONE will Ever come close to for at least Another 1,000,000 Years.

Prince, your passing saddens me deeply😟....but GOD gave you to us to entertain us and now your work is finished. May your precious soul be truly at peace now. Love you always, Sweet Angel💘📿

The smile I have on my face right now watching this and I wasn’t even born! Amazing! Rest in Love Purple one 💜
Prince smiled when she said, "We believe in the spirit...." That's where his heart always was!
He meant the devil
Seriously.. I didn't even realize the awards used to be that damn divided at that time. Shit, hearing them say "Black Single" made my white ass uncomfortable lol
Funny how times change.
Lol!
+XxShadowGTxX Their still divided.
+XxShadowGTxX Lol!
i agree
I love how Prince commands.
Bosses command respect. He was and still is definitely.. CERTIFIED BOSS! Rest well Pimpin ass Prince!🤘🏿😌✌🏿
Lionel Richie's reaction to Prince winning everything is classic. He was either jealous or pissed lol.
Lionel Ritchie was annoying as hell.
+setdrec If he couldn't handle someone else winning, he wouldn't have been there, but he did win the big one that year for best album the Grammy for Can't Slow Down and he deserved it
+setdrec yeah he was, but later on in life they would become friends.
Actually Lionel Ritchie's behaviour was really embarrassing. All of the awards Prince won were well deserved.
C’mon man. He probably knew he had no chance. Purple rain was monster at that time. Hell still is to this day.
I remember this awards show. I had a huge crush on Prince, loved his music, and I begged my Mom to let me stay up to watch this on a school night. LOL
RIP Prince "Life is death without adventure" You will be missed. Sad Day

well..when you beat something like Thriller..you definitely are the best of all the best ones. well done Prince.
+Carolina Martucci Michael Jackson ruled the 80's he was way bigger than prince everything was Michael this Michael that, he was huge, I personally like him his songs better, I like prince but only like 5 songs where as Michael the list goes on all the way down the Jackson 5.
+mike johnson You need to know that Prince's catalog surpasses Michael's by eons. You gotta know his music for real to give any kind of comparison. ..... Peace
+mike johnson well, yes Michael might have been huge but Prince was extraordinary.
+Karl Mills absolutely 👏👏👏👏 well said.

It was a fantastic time to have lived through which I wouldn't change for anything they have today.
just thinkin the exact same thing!
I really don't think we will see another Prince again, let alone another Michael Jackson.
Glenn Vanish To name just two of a long list of talented artists that were out during this period of time.
The nominees are absolute legends themselves. The competition was fierce
That he lets his band pass ahead of him to reach the stage first - pure class. And Wendy speaks for him.... :)

Just for some people to understand.
Thriller came out in 1982. It was incredible that it even got a nomination three years after its release.

That was his bodyguard 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah cause he was a humble and humorous soul. He knew and want to acknowledge he didn't get there by himself. The Revolution, especially that female she helped rock that album and that band. I thought of her as co-pilot while Prince lead. I was born yrs later but I've come across so much music archives of Prince and the Revolution. Before he went solo he was part of a "team" So I think it's great he did that because after that album he went his own way without them and they pretty much became "dust in the wind" without him. This was pretty much their moment spotlight for the hardwork they put in.
Why does that matter?
That was his bodyguard not band member

Jacquetta Williamson be still my heart!!! that was messed up. they really distinguished the black from the white didn't they? and prince didn't look to thrilled about it either.
Melanie R. How is it racist? They said favorite black album because black people weren't recognized like white people were.
Did anyone else notice how often the presenters screwed up whenever Prince was brought up in a category? They sounded like they would forget to say his name and made it obvious when they corrected themselves.
