This was sweet! Anne's books on writing and prayer have provided great comfort over the years. I found it interesting that Neal's language was so relentlessly Freudian, but the exercise itself seemed like pure IFS! Early on he makes reference to the idea there are "no bad parts" in IFS, but actually on its fringes practitioners recognize the existence of "unattached burdens" in the psyche, entities that have invaded one's "inner society" with predatory intent. Neal's assertion that the Inner Critic is a parasite maps rather neatly onto this, and in turn seems connected to Steven Pressfield's concept of a transpersonal "engine of destruction" that "opposes creativity in all domains," which he calls "Resistance."

I love Annie, but the best part of this podcast is when Annie exits the stage! I loved the interchange between the two men when they talk about their perspectives on suffering, compassion and the therapeutic encounter.
