All these months later and I JUST NOW got my hands on a Lion miniature ! He's always been sold out online or in my local store, it's been crazy. I am looking forward to getting him painted so thanks for this !
Can't wait until Corax returns. I think his will be the best loyalist primarch model since he's tapping into some warp fuckery, maybe he'll get badass raven wings
This video was so darn good. I am painting my Johnson in Deathwing colours, but I really appreciated this video for some new stuff I learned. Love the gold method. Love the Black > Green base coat to clean highlights, blew my mind. Amazing painting, earned yourself a sub
I'm still a new Warhammer fan, and I have yet to get any mini's, but when I eventually do I am going to be using your tutorials as guidance because I find them quite easy to under stand. Thank you for your effort sir
Ive been waiting for this guide, I always appreciate your approach and insight into models especially with characters. Thank you for this tutorial Lloyd 🙏
i used your technique for painting his face on a comission i painted for a friend (substituting bugmans glow for barbarian flesh from AP though) and it was hands down the best face i have ever painter, love vid mate.
Not sure if loving you to bits for giving me a reliable, solid and beautifull scheme and set to follow for painting this gorgeous, beautifull model or hating your guts for making me buy three primers I will use just for It, around ten/fifteen colours and making me doubt my, admittedly lacking, abilities. Still, thanks are in order, good sir!
Thanks for defending Corax White! I just use a hand mixer with a bit of medium into the paint and then it's really one of the nicest whites out there. I love Bold Ttitanium White as well but that is a pure pure white where i like Corax White as a cold white for cloth and things like that. I am not a "this or that brand" painter and I mostly recently have been using mostly Citadel and Pro Acryl.
I have far too much paint haha! I like corax as the base for any white, then shade depending on the material - soulblight for hard surgaces, apothecary white for cloth
One model is really like to see you do is the new Dante model. I got the new model myself but I’m waiting to start him until I see a couple of different tutorials on him.
This tutorial is brilliant! If only i was half as good, i would be much happier. I know it’s a pretty crazy suggestion, but would you be up to paint a lord of skulls?
Glad you like the tutorial - hopefully it helps you with your painting! I'm afraid I haven't got time for a Lord of Skulls - but I have done a lot of Khorne tutorials that might help?
@@ThePaintingCoach I’ll be completely honest, your correct, more than time itself is needed for a daemon engine like that! Your khorne tutorials are fantastic and i have taken many tips from them. Yes, This lion was one of the best i have seen, glad that the painting coach never disappoints!
Love your work as always! One small note - a few of the paints you used (particularly noticed corax white and soulblight gray) didn't make it onto your paint list. Minor quibble though!
Couple of questions? And I apologize if you answered this in the video: but which paint did you use on “El’Jonson” right pauldron? Specifically, the paper that says his last name and did you use Nhul Oil to shade the lettering? Thank you. Amazing job by the way!
I think I used Rakarth Flesh, shaded it with Agrax (including the lettering) and then highlighted firstly with Rakarth Flesh and then Pallid Wych Flesh
Awesome vid, as always. Man, always when i try to use vallejo metallics, they are GRAINY as hell, idkw. I shake and shake and shake - ANY citadel metallic is smooth but in vallejo i literally can see grains. What is my problem? I really want to use vallejo metallics, there are very good metal colors.
You could try mixing your own, or just use base coats and build him up as you go - a lot of the paints used for you other dark angels could also be used here
The Lions armor is Black, He's been asleep since the Heresy when Dark Angels armor was originally black with red chapter markings, before the green armor was a thing. If you look closely at the GW promo image you will see the armor is black.
Check out the paint guide from 'Eavy Metal www.warhammer-community.com/2023/04/12/painting-the-lion-how-eavy-metal-tackled-one-of-the-all-time-greats/ I've used similar colours to simplify the scheme a little - you can always glaze some boack in if you want to go darker
@@KnightSquire Reguadless of what a retconned book just written says, His armor would most definitely be black. Black armor was the original draw to Dark Angels players in Rogue trader. Green Armor did not come along until 2nd Edition well after the Heresy was conceived.
@@ThePaintingCoach Thank you for responding. Do you have a more in depth guide on the way you achieved such awesome TMM. (I did re watch your video and realised that you did go through it when you were painting the backpack vents, I am just hoping for more if you have anything) Awesome guide over all though, and I will be using it.
I'll be putting a video on Dante live tomorrow which is all about the gold - so keep an eye out for that! I also have a video on Sigvald that covers gold too
Awesome! The music was a bit distracting at times. Hard to focus on what your were saying. It should be more background music rather than trying to see what you’re painting underneath a roaring orchestra. Just my take.
Beautiful model, but GW really dropped the ball on putting it out and too many scalpers got it. Glad you got one though. I hear GW will release him as a separate model at least.
Wait... people hate corax white? I painted 1200 POINTS OF CUSTODES WITH WHITESCAR (capes and details) AND THAT STUFF PAINTS AND DRIES LIKE WET SAND! Corax white is much easier to handle and dries much better
If only i didnt have a sea of plastic to paint already😢... And i had a couple hundred hours... And a good bit more skill... Well at least i can enjoy the video!!!🤪 Thanks
i love the guide, but you just straight up miss parts of the painting process and don't mention them :D quite jarring when trying to follow :D the shield for example you just miss how you painted the eagle part. and the back cloak i assume you did at the same time as the dissambeled cloak but no idea :D

Hopefully he will be released stand alone soon
people are out of their mind if they think I'm paying 350.00 for it lol
Great guide, can you help me out with the first step tho? Can't seem to find a Lion ;)
Hopefully he will be out soon
May I ask the size of the brush used for Evil Sunz Scarlet on the small dark angels icon detail?
I can't remember but probably a size 00 - I use that and a Size 1 or 0 for most work
@@ThePaintingCoach Awesome thank you, I appreciate the link in the description as well as the speedy reply. Great tutorial will have a go asap :)
No problem 👍🏻
how did you paint the lightning on the sword? the strands
Check this video out th-cam.com/video/ijINQoUTajA/w-d-xo.html
What do you use as holders for all the peices?
Redgrass Games handles and a selection of cork bottle stoppers
What glue do you use to put it all together? Superglue always leaves this frosting.
I used super glue - loctite. If you have issues, you can always scrap the paint off the contact points and use normal plastic glue 👍🏻
Question would nocturne work for his Armor
I've not tried it - give it a go on a spare part and see if you like it!
could be dumb, but what are you using to hold the different parts of lion ? I mean what are those "sticks" ?
I use a mixture of Redgrass Games painting handles and large corks - bottle stoppers - with a paper clip pinned into parts of the miniature
@@ThePaintingCoach Okay thank you a lot :D
No problem

Hey Coach! Question for you- what/how do you use to stick model parts to cork like that? I have some pieces I need to do separately as well
Either some blu-tac, or in the case of the main body, I pin it with a paper clip
@@ThePaintingCoach thanks Coach!
How did you attach the cape to the handle??
With some of the putty you get with the redgrass handle - you can also some blu-tac
Finally, my favourite prinarch painted! (Where did you get him)
Cheers! I was lucky my LGS had some in
Wish i couldve got this still waiting for second wave or single release , bet i will be waiting a year 😢
Hopefully soon 🤞🏻
@@ThePaintingCoach hopefully bro, been waiting about ten years for the lion , whats one more . I refuse to be scalped .
Fingers crossed that after leviathan releases, stock levels will go back to normal!
@@ThePaintingCoach hopes and prayers ..
Did you do only one coat of the 1:1 of Caliban and black for the armour so it has some transparency or did you do multiple coats for the solid colour?
I did just the one coat 👍🏻
How much water do you use to thin down your paints?
Not much as I am working on a wet palette - it also depends on how thick the paint is. Generally I use a couple of drops
@ThePaintingCoach thanks for the reply! Just getting used to the wet palet myself.
What do you use to secure the model parts for painting?
Hobby putty or blu-tac for large parts. For others I drill a small hole and use a pin
NICE!!!! thx
Very nice, but you should have made a video about how to purchase the Lion.
He will be put individually soon enough 👍🏻
