Hello Jonathan Glazer - Your film 'Under The Skin' is Genius. It literally grabbed my attention from the second I started to watch it. Looking at humanity through the 'eyes of an alien' played brilliantly by Scarlett Johansson was incredible. The film is so spiritual and I got that connection and also it resonated with me profoundly in terms of her aloneness here, the female hunter, her lostness and directionless coupled with her aloneness. We are consciousness having a human experience here yet we identity with our 'stories' and human faces and bodies so intensely plus for many who are unconsciousness of this spiritual truth. The lack of empathy on the beach scene really let us experience her 'alien-ness' because what makes us 'human' is to have empathy which without would be unthinkable - as we saw with the child on the beach which was harrowing scene and stayed with me it was so powerful yet at the same time depicts life through her lens. The film shows a female hunter lost and in search for human connectedness at the same time showing these men sinking into what appeared to be another dimension of reality. It was a remarkable film that I will never forget. Thank you so much.
Just think...none of those people who helped Johanssen up had any knowledge that they were being filmed as part of a movie or knew that they were interacting with a celebrity.
Mr. Glazer - I completely enjoyed your movie. I just wanted to comment about your metaphor regarding the ant, and its significance. I see the ant as bridging the type of biological trap that tropical ants face against the insect-eating pitcher plant, and how the aliens would devour men. Both in the mechanism of digestion, and how prey is lured into the trap are similar. Further, there is absolutely no way that the ant represented in the movie (exaggerated mandibles) originated in that region, it’s a jungle ant. I believe Glazer created a familiar way to pose a biological construct to the audience who would not be familiar with an alien digestive process. Sure, Scarlet could have ate her prey (which I would have equally enjoyed watching). But, it would be significantly more eerie to have prey willingly and mindlessly fall into the black goo. Further, it feels subconsciously familiar to the audience because we have that same process here on earth. It would further explain the uneasy feeling observers face when prey seemingly walk willingly and unemotively into a trap. Come to think of it, I wish Glazer would have spoken to me. I would have tried to convince him to have the setting closer to the equator to tie in the ant metaphor. Then again, maybe he tried to bury that idea on purpose to keep others off track, I digress. I have carefully looked and not found anyone else with my ant-metaphor theory . If anyone who worked on the film, or its writing could comment, I would appreciate it. Thank you Mr. Glazer for this masterpiece for me to dissect!!! I hope others see what I see also, and comment. See ya at the Mensa meeting!
I like that movie and watched a couple of interview with her but in real life, I would never recognize her, especially if she's not acting like a movie star
Curious. Don't you have to ask people if they can be on camera for a film? The result is amazing, just curious how it didn't lead to legal issues. Maybe they chased down the people they captured to inform them?
You wouldn't, no one would expect her to be there. Even the men having a direct conversation with her in the van didn't realize. Celebrities do manage to go out in public without attracting attention. Paul McCartney and Keanu Reeves both travel on public transport.
Mmmmm. I find it difficult to believe that EVERYTHING we're seeing here is genuine. I once fell hard at a bus stop and broke my arm. Despite there being about ten people present, NOBODY came to my aid! No one even asked if I was ok. Human kindness?
Let me guess: you don't look like Scarlett? I'm a pretty big/tall fellow, and my experience is, people on the streets (that I don't know) hesitate communicating with me, simply because of my size. Also generally, women are always seen as less of a threat than men.
@@nederlanditism1154 He literally just said they didn't, there was only handful of real actors. Even many with speaking parts who had over 30 seconds or minutes on film were not actors.

I saw this covered in another behind they scenes video, the casting director mentioned which of the people featured were real actors and there weren't many of them. It was basically Scarlett, one of the male victims, one of the women in the nightclub and the man she meets near the end who takes her to his house. The disfigured man was also cast for obvious reasons but he's not a trained actor. Everyone else was just members of the general public caught on hidden camera's.

Very different from the book. Clearly a colossal amount of work was involved adapting this and bringing it to the screen.
The whole meat issue was taken out, and for the better. It stuck the book in triviality. The film is great.
just a genius film, landmark of modern sci-fi, the soundtrack is outstanding work too.
One of my favourite films. Atmosphere, plot, delivery... love it.

I want to know how they approach each person to get them signed the permission to appear on film after they got the scene they wanted.
I imagine a lot of production assistants and runners intercepting all the pedestrians having them sign release forms there and then.

I can imagine people on the streets of Glasgow being like "Is that Scarlett Johansson?" "It can't be. Why would she be here in Glasgow?"

From personal experience, celebrities look a lot different in real life. It can be easy to not recognize them.

i know this is a year late but yes, they chased down the people who were in the shot and asked their permission to be in the film :)

He talked about how there were no cameras in the street, that there was no regular set. They indeed used casted actors/ participants.

Guy the right that helps her up, he looks at her in awkward way that’s only possible if it’s a documentary with real people.
For a girl from Hollywood it probably wasn't too much of a stretch to find Glasgow an alien environment.
